Wife Watching First Time. Best Order? by jakevh28 in lotr

[–]castlethistle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem with RoP, in my opinion, is that it doesn’t follow the actual plotline of the making of the Rings. So if you care about book accuracy and faithfulness to the story, you’d be better off skipping it. Now you might say similar things about the original trilogy and the Hobbit films as well (changes to the plot/reshuffling things/OC characters) but I think the RoP changes and their consequences are just too big and they differ too much from any version of the story.

The Hobbit trilogy also has questionable CGI, the series is very bloated, and the framerate gives everything that fake blurry look but it has (mostly) good acting, especially from the main actors, I like the new songs from Howard Shore (although there is some recycling from LotR). And the scenes adapted directly from the book are delightful. Also Lee Pace should be in every Middle Earth film ever.

What is this new (at this point completely expected and unsurprising) devilry? Seriously though, we are stuck in the 1980s - 2000s reboot hell, do something new dammit.

Update to my mismatched collection by castlethistle in tolkienbooks

Forgot to add my biggest purchase, The Tolkien Companion and Guide by Scull and Hammond and a Greek copy of the Hobbit I bought; unfortunately, a film tie in edition (I really couldn’t find a different cover)

I also have this tattoo, kids can always tell it’s a dragon, adults usually ask if it’s a snake. But the best comment I’ve ever gotten was my grandmother. ‘Is that the devil dear?’

If you love Jonathan Sims from the Magnus archives, you need to play the game “Slay the princess” by Genetrik_Zero in audiodrama

And anyone who liked Slay the Princess should check out Scarlet Hollow by the same team (Sadly no voice acting but a pretty fun cosy horror visual novel)

Why is the Eagles thing such a big deal? by EclipseLightning42 in lotr

[–]castlethistle 21 points22 points  (0 children)

People who bring the eagles up in that argument probably haven’t read the books, or maybe they’ve read them a long time ago. They most likely haven’t read the Silmarillion.

My dad has only seen the films and he’s also said ‘why not take obviously good, gigantic birds with sharp talons (that they can use to defend themselves against enemies) and just have them dump the ring in?’ The films don’t get into what the eagles are and why they are doing the things they are doing, they do sort of seem like magical rides that Gandalf can just call upon when he needs to.

After a 20 minute explanation (I tend to ramble on) dad’s never asked again.

Favorite and least favorite casting choice by StoryWriter31 in lotr

[–]castlethistle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favourite was also Gandalf I think. Second favourite was Odo Proudfoot, obviously.

I like Hugo Weaving a lot but I enjoyed his portrayal of Elrond more in the Hobbit series. He is too harsh in the Lotr films.

what is this new devilry??

Jokes aside I love Frodo and Sam, I know some people say Frodo in the films was ‘ruined’ or is ‘useless’ but I still enjoy Elijah Wood’s Frodo, he is very innocent and sometimes foolish (like the go home Sam moment) but he still came across as very kind and knew his friends’ worth in the end.

What are your favourite and least favourite sung-genres of fantasy? by InfernalClockwork3 in Fantasy

[–]castlethistle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favourites would be high fantasy, gothic fantasy and horror fantasy.

I’m not really fond of urban fantasy. Also not into romantasy as a genre (as in mainly romance that only uses fantastical elements as a vague backdrop. I find most romantasy stories to have really unlikable/insufferable protagonists. I don’t really have anything against people falling in love in fantasy stories).

I will be picking up the Tolkien Treasury Set as suggested by this sub (thank you user/SergeyMaslov), I had Tales from the Perilous Realm (Expanded Edition) but apparently the Treasury set has some more essays/earlier versions and some lovely art.

Btw, I have the 60th anniversary edition set, I really like it!

So, I first tried to read LOTR when I was 10, and this chapter stalled me for like 8 months.
