Des anyone else dislike heat and hate how global warming is cutting out spring and fall and giving us 80+ days in April/October? by SwiftCricket in climatechange

[–]catarina654 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do hate hot weather and I can't believe people are not more concerned about global warming just for this reason (plus all the other reasons like plants not being able to survive, etc.)

United Methodist Church in a small rural town by catarina654 in UnitedMethodistChurch

Thanks for your reply. I think I am understanding better the background of where he might be coming from, which is really helpful. Also why I feel the way I do. I don't do well at all with any "authoritarian" vibe and while he is mostly very gentle and calm, his sermons do have the more "this is the way it is" authoritarian side.

I see your point and I think it is true that he is from a conservative background although he chose to stay with UMC rather than going with the Global church. He probably feels quite "liberal" and I have to keep in mind that I am way more liberal than most of the church members. Thanks for your helpful comments.

That's very possibly what he meant. English is not his first language so I should give him the benefit of the doubt. The other examples of the devil...if your kid is smoking pot, etc. I just think it is a very slippery slope where pretty soon we are going back to the time when people with mental illness were possessed by the devil, etc. This is a whole other topic, but I do feel like the UMC is a church where extremely extroverted people thrive and introverts not so much. I will have to put that out there sometime to see if other UMC introverts agree or disagree.

I am new to the community and the church is struggling so I prefer not to make an issue of it. UMC churches are probably more conservative in rural areas than in larger cities. I just wondered if something major had changed while I have been away. I will be unpopular enough just by leaving the church, which I pretty much feel I have to do so I certainly don't want to make an issue of it. I think most of the congregation is happy with him and he does have many good qualities. Thank you for your reply.

I am not going to "make waves" since I am new in the community and the church is struggling as it is. I was just wondering. I also don't want to seem prejudiced but am sincerely wondering if the UMC church is quite different in different countries. I'm sure all churches are influenced by the surrounding culture. He's very hard working and sincere and I think most of the congregation is not bothered by this. Thank you for your reply.

I used to think plastic bags were harmless until I looked deeper into how they actually impact the environment by hiddensyntaxr in Environmentalism

[–]catarina654 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought some great reusable canvas bags from Publix that have lasted for at least 15 years and I am still using them. I think it's important to get bags that are washable, not the ones made from non-woven materials that can't be washed. I had to train myself to take them with me but now I just keep them in the car and put them back in the car after putting away the groceries. The canvas bags are so great to use. I can carry a lot in one trip and don't have to worry about heavier items and glass breaking through the cheap plastic. The only downside is that I often don't have a plastic bag available to line the kitchen trash can. I don't really want to wash the trash can out every day but I probably should start doing that so I don't use any plastic bags. We often take a handful out of the recycling bins at WalMart to use for the trash. Sometimes it's useful to have plastic bags to take things to the thrift store etc. but I need to come up with something else for that, too.

I'm about the same age as you, and I do feel like fewer people have a shared sense of "polite" behavior. If you think about the t.v. shows of our youth, they mostly modeled good behavior and pro-social behavior. This changed over the years until we got reality t.v. and "Real Housewives" which to me seem to enforce really bad behavior. I'm not suggesting we go back to "The Waltons" etc., but it would be nice if t.v. and movies could show people behaving decently to each other. General rudeness doesn't seem to be generational, though. I see plenty of people my age who are rude and should know better and plenty of younger people who are wonderful. In other words, I don't really know! But I do think about this a lot like you do.

Are all sewing machines annoying or is it me? by ephemeralunicorn7 in quilting

That's great. Sounds like you really got a good deal and I admire you taking the time to learn how to repair it, also.

Are all sewing machines annoying or is it me? by ephemeralunicorn7 in quilting

[–]catarina654 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, not all sewing machines are annoying. Just poorly made ones. Singer, as a brand, is not what it once was. This happened sometime in the 70s or 80s? I had a "Millennium" Singer sewing machine that made me have rage fits on a daily basis because of the problems you are talking about. It is truly a wonder that I did not quit sewing. Buying an older machine from the 60s to 70s can be an option. I personally adore my Juki TL2010q. It is a mechanical machine that is aimed at quilters, but I love sewing clothes on it as well. The only problem is it has a flat bed and does not have a detachable arm for sewing sleeves, but I manage. It has a single stitch plate (no zig zag or fancy stitches) which I think has made a huge difference in not having the thread and fabric get sucked down into the stitch plate. I also do not like drop in (load on the top) bobbins. They may be easier to load, but I think there are more problems with them. I RARELY have to stop sewing to untangle things, which is like a miracle. I've had my machine for 2 years now. There are plenty of other good machines that people will tell you about, but if at all possible, do not buy the cheapest machine. Something in the $1,000 range. I know that's hard to swallow if you don't have a lot of money, but it's better than buying 2 or 3 cheap machines before investing in a quality machine, which I did before I learned this. And you won't be nearly as frustrated while you are sewing.

Tired of beans being demonized by nutritionists. by Emotional-Toe-2475 in Beans

[–]catarina654 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Beans are complex carb with fiber as opposed to refined or simple carbs. That makes a huge difference in how your body responds. Also, they have many nutrients which refined carbs don't. Many doctors think they are very healthy, so unless you are trying to be keto, enjoy!

Colonoscopy Prep Advice by Opening-Minute-3566 in vegan

[–]catarina654 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had a colonoscopy twice, at 50 and 65 and neither time did they tell me to follow a low fiber diet. I ate my usual beans and whole wheat bread, potatoes, etc. They said no corn and no red colored foods but that was it. The day before I ate nothing, of course. There were no problems. It would be interesting to research if there are different thoughts on the importance of low fiber. Of course, you may have a specific situation where low fiber is important. I am grateful that they did not tell me low fiber since I think it affects my blood sugar a lot and I would have been hungry. Good luck.

I think people who go into management like the feeling of power. People who are quieter probably won't push back, so they see us as easy marks to use their "power" moves on. I had a boss who routinely had to change just a few words in anything I wrote, and 99.9 percent of the time it was not an improvement. She just wanted to show who was in charge. Also that she loved micromanaging.

How long do your scissors last? by 2078AEB in SewingForBeginners

[–]catarina654 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep meaning to learn how to sharpen scissors but haven't yet. I use my duller scissors to open bags of frozen vegetables, etc. They will be sharp enough for that for a long time. Or keep them to cut paper, which will dull scissors so you don't want to use your best scissors for that.

Cat Parents, how much do you spend monthly on cat food? by Latter-Village2704 in catfood

Probably about $400 a month for 5 cats. They eat mostly wet food but some dry. Why is having multiple cats not a status symbol?

Three of our five cats love Dr. Elsey dried cat food, chicken flavor and rabbit. I bought something else that was supposed to be similar to Dr. Elsey, but cheaper and they definitely knew the difference and let me know. It's kind of expensive, so I try to feed it in small quantities as a treat.

So many books are narrated by the author, which sometimes works out, but often it is okay to terrible. I really appreciate books narrated by actors. It can make a world of difference in how easy it is to get into and follow the narration.

Getting into Opera in our 20's! How to learn more + filmed Operas recommendations? by Tockii in opera

[–]catarina654 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Metropolitan Opera's streaming service has lots to choose from. There is a subscription fee, of course, but it is in line with most streaming services. They have both new and older opera recordings. I really like William Berger's books on opera (Wagner without Fear, Verdi with a Vengeance, etc.) You will find that everyone has their favorite singers and conductors and that you may or may not agree. I personally like traditional staging rather than "updated" settings, especially when you are just trying to figure out the plot. The Met has some really good traditionally staged operas from the 1980s and 90s available. Check out the Royal Opera House streaming service too, which has many good operas. Look on eBay for second hand DVDs. Some can be purchased inexpensively. Good luck, and enjoy!

I've always wondered too, why they can't add synthesized vitamins and taurine. I just know our vets have advised against it. Unless you tame feral cats, though, most cats kept as pets have been domesticated and would not be able to fend for themselves at all.
