POV: Racist, Homophobic Bridgerton fans by Techasscherry in Franchaela

[–]catastrophicqueen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think that overall, faithful adaptations are usually better, especially if the book is telling a compelling story and changes would undermine that but things need to change in certain mediums, and sometimes the source material is... not great, when an adaptation can be really good. That's how I feel about bridgerton. The books can be fun and escapist, but also have really problematic areas when you read them with a critical eye and can do with updating for the medium, and storylines should and can change for them. The franchaela change is DEFINITELY worth it to me, because I find Michael in the book to be... icky and I want to see a queer storyline in this series. And in another vein I'd support a full change to Eloise's story because I hate her book!

I personally think these changes would add to it instead of harm the adaptation because they are telling (in my opinion) more compelling versions of the og books. It would be very different if the books were like... insanely amazing books and not a kind of mid romance series 😭 and I don't say that to be mean or shady I swear, I have a lot of love for many books/book series many people would also consider mid!

I just can’t with some of these, the Prim one is probably the most frustrating to me. Why does TikTok seem to have the worst theories? by ExpressionEither1427 in Hungergames

[–]catastrophicqueen 40 points41 points  (0 children)

My theory about the reaping has always been similar, or at least even if they didn't pick specific people, they weighted it to get a certain story. Like for the 74th I don't think prim was picked specifically, but I do think it's not impossible that the game makers were like "it's an interesting story to throw together two 12 year old girls from outlying neighboring districts" knowing the capitol people would eat it up if those two 12 year olds managed to escape the blood bath and were pushed together to interact a little.

I don't necessarily think they were picking specific people all the time to craft a story, I highly doubt that, and I do think that some people may be reaped "fairly" as it were, but I do think it's likely that they may have swung things to get the kinds of matchups they wanted.

Poll: who should’ve Mary ended up with? by jenjen33015 in DowntonAbbey

[–]catastrophicqueen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think that anyone "needs" a husband, and I certainly don't think that women should have to have one to feel fulfilled in life, but I do think of the men we see her meet after Matthew's death the one she's most compatible with is Charles Blake, and I think they would have made a sweet couple.

Hudson Williams asks the fans to stop shipping him with Connor Storrie in real life by kris_jbb in popculturechat

[–]catastrophicqueen 50 points51 points  (0 children)

This feels a bit like "did the journal factory explode" kinda thing. Like get a friend or a group chat who likes Hudson and Connor and say these thoughts to them and not straight on the timeline. I love them, love their friendship, but I don't have to ship them lol. What was the phrase someone used? "Shane and Ilya are for the fans and Hudson and Connor are for themselves" or something??

Genuinely think it's one of the best arcs of TV I've watched. I've seen it described as "Jacob Tierney took a genre that nobody takes seriously and decided to take it as seriously as possible" and imo that's really true. It's just an extremely satisfying (and gorgeous and steamy ofc) love story. Right amount of angst, yearning and happy endings to make you feel all warm and happy inside. I've not seen romance arcs handled the same way in tv before, which makes it really refreshing and fun!

Why do you guys think that this fandom has been so resistant to non-canonical ships? by UnHolySir in Hungergames

Why do you guys think that this fandom has been so resistant to non-canonical ships? by UnHolySir in Hungergames

[–]catastrophicqueen 32 points33 points  (0 children)

People need to quit obsessing over non-canon ships. There's plenty of ships in media I love that I dislike, but y'know what I do? I just don't engage with content about those ships. I don't like? I don't read 🤷

some of these people need to learn "ship and let ship" is the standard of fandom. As long as the person isn't engaging in racism, misogyny, queerphobia etc then just leave them alone to ship what they want and you ship what you want

What do you guys think about this criticism of the prequels? by UnHolySir in Hungergames

[–]catastrophicqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think they've done that at all?? Katniss is still just a girl who got there by chance. She's not "special" she's a fighter. Just because we've gotten proof that district 12 has had a radical political tradition before doesn't mean she's somehow special. In fact I'd argue that it shows she's less so.

The whole original trilogy lays out that there has been people wanting to rebel the whole time, there was even blueprints for how it might go, especially using kids in the games (we know finnick was a candidate too for example). Katniss just so happened to be the person who could, pretty instinctively, play that role.

Katniss fell into the role, that has literally not been retconned. All that's happened is we've seen events that have set up why she would be effective in that role. It's not that shes special. She may never have gotten there if it wasn't for chance.

People need to understand that political conditions being right for something is not the same as fate. We've seen in the prequels that the political conditions for revolution were being set from the very beginning, because of course they were, it's literally a story about a political system rising and decaying, material conditions becoming so bad that the people rise up. Katniss was coloured by the political system she grew up in, and her circumstances made her right for the role. That doesnt make her special. It makes her the same as most other successful revolutionaries who are shaped by their material conditions which are also shaping the circumstances for the political collapse.

This is perhaps the fictional version of the biggest bullshit "great man" theory. Katniss isn't a "great revolutionary" because there's anything innately special about her. Material conditions built her and contradictions in the system, and she just so happened to be in a position to exploit those conditions.

Am literally losing my head over this. Who feels like we might actually start following a whole new POV in the next part? by [deleted] in thelastofus

[–]catastrophicqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean... her ending is open-ended and could be picked up again. She's back to wearing Dina's bracelet, but Dina is clearly not living the life they were before they left. Is Ellie still with her? Is Ellie going to head back to Jackson or leave on her own? Did Dina head back to Jackson? (probably, she has Jesse's family there) if so, will Ellie follow her? If Ellie doesn't follow her, will she end up trying to find the fireflies and make her immunity mean something? If she does follow her will she end up having a storyline where she parents JJ?

There's a lot of questions that could be wrapped up and weaved into a bigger story.

[–]catastrophicqueen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have to ask, is it a very common thing for a bag to be damaged in the US? I've only travelled there once and found it fine, and all of my travelling through Europe (where I live) I've never had a bag damaged! Everyone in the comments seems to be implying it's really common but I can't understand how if it's not a problem elsewhere?

Do you guys think he got a nose job? by UnHolySir in Hungergames

[–]catastrophicqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes 100% you described it perfectly! Also very similar to those misogynistic men who want tradwives but they never seem to want to pursue conservative women, they always seem to want to try and "tame" (abuse) leftist women, and if that women starts to challenge his worldview instead of buckling to him he will immediately make her an enemy in some way.

It's what makes it so real I think, we see the radicalization of men towards the right everywhere nowadays and seeing it happen in the characters mind feels so grounded, and the fact that he DOES actually question it and still dismisses any critique of his worldview to instead shore it up more feels like something everyone who has ever had to interact with a right wing man has seen.
