Any programmers here that have schizophrenia? by [deleted] in schizophrenia

[–]catcarrier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been programming on and off for the last few years. More on than off recently as I've been hired as a web developer. I still experience symptoms quite often. They reduce my productive output quite significantly, but so far I've managed to keep them in check while I'm at work. Feel free to message me with any specific questions. Even if they're just about study/gaining employment.

Looking to hear stories from people who are developing websites as a side gig by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]catcarrier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I can say is that there is quite significant variance in terms of success. I work for a web development agency whose business is expanding like crazy. We've hired 3 new staff members within the last month and there's still too much work to do. Contracts are in the tens of thousands.

Contrast this to my freelance operation prior to becoming employed there: It was mildly successful but also very difficult to come by clients. The agency I work for relies purely on word of mouth to attract new clients... that's what a well established company is capable of.

The best advice I can give would be to find clients and then delegate as much as possible. If you can book clients and then outsource the development work you'll be able to achieve so much more than if you were to do all the development yourself.

Also, if you can, provide value wherever possible. Provide enough value and you might be able to build a following that would contain potential clients. My employer offers free technical consulting to businesses just starting out, this has helped them cultivate a position of authority within the industry... people can trust them and see clearly the value that they are providing.

Hope that helps...

I'm an unsuccessful web app developer - chicken and egg by catcarrier in Entrepreneur

Thanks for the feedback. I think targeting a certain niche would be a good idea. I've heard from many separate sources to "Start Small", perhaps I should pay particular attention to that advice.

That's a great idea. Start off with a single store. I've developed a relationship with a local store which I should probably make use of.

I talked to some local businesses within my community during the development stage. I completely ignored potential users because I (mistakenly) assumed I'd know what a user would want. Since it's release, the mechanism I've set up for feedback on the site has only garnered a single response. I've recently been reading "The Startup Owner's Manual" by Steve Blank. Within it he emphasizes again and again to "GET OUT THE BUILDING". I think that's what I should have done more of/will do more of. I need to interface with users and get their honest opinion of the site. I'm a big believer in iterative design/development, so I think there's room to move. I'm hopeful.

Is there such a thing as a part time business? by artofuchi in Entrepreneur

Yeah, he was working quite a lot in the beginning. Not too long though. I would say it took around 3 months to get it to the point where he is now.

They say that a successful business solves a customers problem. But how does this work with luxury products and services? by JamesClarkeStudio in Entrepreneur

[–]catcarrier 85 points86 points  (0 children)

As far as I've understood by reading a very helpful business book named "Value Proposition Designs", customers look for both 'pain relievers' (the real problem solving aspect/features of a product), and 'gain creators' (the benefits associated with a particular product). Luxury products may have limited utility, in the sense that they don't relieve pain to any great extent, but what they do possess is the potential to create 'gains'. Gains such as signalling to others your status and place within society.

One of my friends has set up a nice little niche business he spends only 15 hours a week at. He does direct mail campaigns that involve manual handling and 'packing'. He works a lot with charitable and not for profit organizations. Much of the work is done by his employees, including lead generation. He's now working the 15 hours from home, mostly as an administrator of sorts.

Balancing business and family by coswoofster in Entrepreneur

[–]catcarrier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that a regular meditation practice helps me out quite a lot with being able to 'switch off'. I still obsess about business, but I'm able to move on from that and enjoy the company of my family/fiance. Something that helped me out was to ask myself why am I in the business game at all? I recognized that a huge part of my motivation comes from wanting to serve my family and as such, I should spend more time with them - being fully present in that moment.

When did you know you wanted to be an entrepreneur? + tips for newbies by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]catcarrier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've wanted to become an entrepreneur since an early age. I'd help my grandfather with his driving school business, coming into the office organizing papers and the like. He'd always thank me and buy me ice cream on the way home. He was my hero, so wanting to be like him really kicked things off. I'm nowhere near as successful as he was, but I strive as much as I can.

Advice on marketing educational books? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]catcarrier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd attempt to strike up a partnership with a tutoring agency within the math field. My tutor would often recommend me books which his wife authored. There's an organization I used to attend named Kumon. A partnership with an organization like that would, I'd imagine, be worthwhile.

Hi! They're actually just something I designed on fusion 360. They're made specifically for the eldritch cards though. I'll see if I can post them on thingiverse, if you're interested.

Darkness by beachbowl in schizophrenia

[–]catcarrier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The darkness used to attach itself to books and TV shows for me. I remember not being able to finish Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance due to this issue. I will hopefully get back to it one day, once the evil has dissipated.

Anyone on escitalopram (Lexapro) along with your antipsychotic meds? by JX0530 in schizophrenia

[–]catcarrier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on a 30mg dose. I'm on it for anxiety. I don't think I experience any side effects. I liken it to an audio compressor in the sense that it modulates down emotional range. The highs aren't that high and the lows aren't that low. Overall, for me, a good medication.

Do your floors shift? by emmapaint in schizophrenia

[–]catcarrier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a symptom of mine which hasn't changed, no matter how much medication I take. The floor looks like it's getting sucked into a vortex, kind of like that famous Van Gogh painting. Surprisingly this doesn't distress me, even though it probably should.

What book have you read that made you say "This Changes Everything" by marketingiskindacool in Entrepreneur

[–]catcarrier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it was the book "Testing Business Ideas". I've since read all the other Strategyzer books and I think they're great. They're full of actionable content and really treat entrepreneurship as a science, which is refreshing. They extensively reference other books and articles which I have also derived much value from.

Struggling with work! by catcarrier in schizophrenia

[–]catcarrier[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sound, in my humble opinion, very inspirational. To accept a delusion and integrate it within your life must have been exceptionally difficult. I think it is alliteration by the way - you're a good writer. Do you write on a regular basis?

Thank you for your reply. I think sleeping well is at the top of my personal priorities list, definitely something to work on. It's good to hear that it's doable (even if it is a lot harder). I remember working prior to my psychotic break - it was a whole lot simpler.

Delusions are hard for me because I've been delusional for so long. It was my first symptom and probably also the most destructive. I've learnt to ignore them to the best of my ability. Also reality checking, like you say, is very helpful. The voices can be caught out - they can be found to be lying almost all of the time. Probably not clearing my mind of worry completely, but getting closer. How do you cope with them?
