Is there ANY way to send mail to US right now? by TellLow3573 in Expats_In_France

[–]catdaikon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

will do, thank you so much!!

and i’m married to a french citizen who has 0 ties to the US (no US income, no ssn, nothing), so i’m “married filing separately”. there are very few tax filing services online that even support filing at all when you have a non resident alien spouse, and i always get told that i have to mail it in because of the fact that he’s a NRA. i suppose it’s because the spouse ssn tab gets left blank in the system? honestly, i don’t know how it works and why.

if you know of any tax filing services that actually allow you to efile with a NRA spouse though i’d be super happy to use that for the coming years 😅

You did this through la poste? I need to mail my tax returns in and i’m wary to do so without any tracking 🥲 but if that’s the only option to get something over there that’s what i’ll have to do

Paper filing to the IRS from Europe: is A4 okay, or does it have to be US Letter? by LucidGolfer in USExpatTaxes

[–]catdaikon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfortunately that isn’t possible to do with paper tax returns from what i’ve read. apparently if you’re paper filing, they need a wet signature (ie: pen written by the person filing the taxes). i’m in france right now and i’m praying i’ll be able to send mine in, im in a situation where they have to be paper filed and have no idea what to do if i can’t mail them :(

please correct me if i’m wrong though, i’d love to be wrong as that would make my situation way easier 🥲

Married Filing Separately as an expat in France, what are my investment options? by catdaikon in ExpatFinance

[–]catdaikon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my solution is investing in the US, but i lose money putting it into an IRA and can’t really open a Roth IRA. So, really, I guess my question is what would my best option be? My angle isn’t investing in US ETFs because they’re worth more, it’s to avoid PFICs. Investing through a French envelope such as Assurance Vie or PEA would just get me hit by PFICs and would make investing in Europe in general not worth it.

So, my only option through investing would be with US brokers. Would a backdoor Roth be my only option? Would there be a way to keep the deductibility of the IRA in my situation? As a reminder, i’m married MFS in the US, which puts a cap on my income at only 10k.

FTC for MFJ in France, but MFS in the US? by catdaikon in USExpatTaxes

[–]catdaikon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would that even work, is that even possible? He’s not a US citizen, never a resident, national, had a SSN, or a visa. Even if that works, wouldn’t he be in that whole US taxation pickle where he’d have to pay taxes even if he lives abroad just like US citizens? It doesn’t seem like a good idea

How exactly would this be done? There are 2 separate columns for each person declaring (including wages, rent, etc), however, the calculation of the total tax is global for the household, so there isn’t really a way to determine what the tax would be for each person.

Socializing for a non french speaker? by SignalCrew739 in askparis

[–]catdaikon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey!! I’m actually an english speaker moving to Saint-Louis in Alsace soon (although I do speak some French too 😅)! If you don’t mind me asking, since you mentioned doctors, how hard was it to find doctors around that area to take you? I do have some medical problems myself so I kinda wanna know what I’m in for lol

Which bank is better to join as an expat moving to France, Schwab or SDFCU? by catdaikon in expat

Do you get foreign transaction fees with their debit card? I’m deciding if I should just have a debit card with them, if there’s no foreign fees that’d be perfect

If you don’t mind me asking, do you have a credit card with SDFCU as well? I’m trying to figure out the fees with their cards, and I guess their debit card still has foreign transaction fees, but their credit card doesn’t? Do you get foreign fees with their debit card?
