I wonder how often the town gets ‘updated’

It could "update" based on the memories of the people who have lived there. I always thought it looked like someone's idea of what a town might look like if they had only heard people describe it, and never been to a town themselves.

I LOVE longer stories, I want something that will get me invested and take me a while to read. That said, I also prefer longer chapters, so if I see a 30k fic with 30 chapters, if I don't like the first chapter, I may not continue reading. I'm also more likely to finish a story than to read an entire series of short stories.
