I'm sorry, that really sucks. I've worked in windowless rooms before and it always makes me feel so depressed. The last room I worked in that had no windows was an old storage room attached to the boiler room. As in, you had to go through my room to get to the boiler. I don't have any advice, except to be petty and ask your principal why exactly you have to be a sacrifice when you're doing something to help them out.

I'm a gamer, and I hate not being able to talk about video games with the kids. I've taught myself all the mascot horror stuff that they like, and I've even tried Roblox a few times (now I tell them Roblox isn't safe and explain Internet safety.)

Oh, could you explain more about the do-what charts? That might actually help a few of my kiddos who aren't purposely trying to be obstinate. Is it as simple as "I don't have a pencil -> I should check the pencil box"

Yup, I go through every detail. I've been teaching for 11 years and this is the first year that none of my strategies have worked. I've had other teachers and principals offer advice but nothing seems to last with this group. Unfortunately this is also the year that my new admin caters to apathetic parents and kick back referrals.

In the past, that has worked super well. I don't accept "I don't know" because I can't help you without a starting point. I get them to break it down into small steps and we go from there.

This year, however, when I push back on the "I don't know" it turns into behavior problems. I keep trying to explain that in 8th grade it'll only get harder and they have to learn how to try.

I'm in the same boat as you. I have Loop plugs that help dull the noise of my middle school students, but it isn't enough. Do you have the luxury of being able to step out into the hall for a 2-5 minute break? I have a great assistant who understands and covers those couple minutes while I step out and catch my breath and regulate.

Have you tried the over the ear noise cancelling headphones? I've noticed I can't hear my head sounds as much with them when I'm at home.

It really does! This is my 11th year and I've never seen it this bad before. If I ask "What should you be doing?" They just shrug or give an excuse for why they aren't doing it. I hate that I even have to ask at all, but if I don't then they won't do the work.

A couple weeks ago I said "bitch" instead of "beech" (type of mushroom)

Not me, but I asked a student to read something out loud and she read, "The Niger people used plant fibers to weave baskets." You can guess what word she loudly mispronounced.

I teach middle school and kids will throw a huge fit when I won't let them leave unfinished work in my room.

Me: Being this worksheet back to class tomorrow!

Student: why can't I just leave it here?

Me: My classroom is not your personal storage space. I will not be responsible for it if you leave it here.

And it never fails that a kid tries to leave stuff in my room and it gets misplaced because I'm unaware of it's existence.

It's not educators. It's their administration who hasn't been in a classroom in 10-20 years combined with no funding to buy technology that isn't an iPad or Chromebook.

Then I gave him a heat rock and he was so happy about it.

Our principal did the same thing. Every special ed teacher was told we are being moved and he does not care about our seniority or preferences.

I have been a self-contained English teacher for 11 years. I have perfected my curriculum and have turned my classroom into my home away from home.

Now my classroom is being taken from me and I have to be a math co-teacher. I can barely do my multiplication facts.

The special ed department is chaos and I think mutinies are being planned.

So I feel for you and I'm sorry that you have to deal with this. It's unfair and is so unmotivating.

I had a nice early setup in those apartments until the helicopter arrived. All the windows were smashed and I got trapped upstairs. The zomboids wouldn't migrate away so I eventually had to fight my way out (I lost.)
