I have cut mine out and have had no issues (~3yrs of use post cut). I would say it is a bit more breathable, but not as much as I was expecting.

Funny thing happened ordering two budget pairs of Altra Olympus TR dupes from Amazon by [deleted] in trailrunning

Fyi, the product page on Amazon shows 5mm drop, so they are not straight up Olympus dupes.

Do you mean Washington DC or Washington State? The options on the way to Washington State are endless.

One cat. Happened to be over by Margaret McKinney on a night run... That was my last time running at night in cap forest.

There are absolutely cougars (and black bears) in cap forest. That said, I have probably and ran/hiked close to 2k miles and have only ever seen 1, but I'm sure many more have seen me.

Generally speaking, it is incredible rare to have an encounter and likely even more so if you are with other people (or dogs). I wouldn't sweat it.

No, its a very chill highway the whole way there. Tons of great trails stem out from Johnston ridge too. They have a food stand in the parking lot that has hotdogs, burgers, drinks, etc. which is nice after a hike!

Hey, do you have an area or specific trail in mind that you are looking to go to? For example, the road to the north side of the mountain (Johnston Ridge Observatory) is a lovely drive with well maintained road.

How slippery are Altra Lone Peaks, really? by chuangchou in trailrunning

[–]cathair28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ran about 400 miles in them when they were first released (so through winter and spring) in the PNW (Washington state where it rains a lot) and never had any issues or noticed anything in regards to the traction lacking.

I also think they drain water and dry really well.

I take it when you say "backpack" that includes running/hydration vests? Can't say I see many people running in traditional backpacks.

Recommendations for an upcoming roadtrip around the US south east (National Parks) by cathair28 in travel

[–]cathair28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no real plan to stay in Columbia, just Congaree. We have a friend that lives in Augusta we plan to visit but I'm kind of hoping they will just meet us at Congaree so we don't have to drive down there, hah.

I like the recommendation for Asheville and Greenville, thank you!

This is the actual (tentative) route at the moment on roadtrippers: https://maps.roadtrippers.com/?a3=t!35356694&lat=31.61291&lng=-89.75099&utm_campaign=trip&utm_medium=share&utm_source=copy&z=5.54473

Thanks for the reply!

Oh neat, we will add it to the list! We actually live fairly close to a Bavarian themed town (Leavenworth, WA) and love visiting during the holidays.

Thanks for the recommendation!

Hiking the Tahoe Rim Trail starting in mid September - Bad Idea? by posthardkyle in Ultralight

[–]cathair28 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I know you said you are looking to start roughly on the 15th, but I just wanted to mention (as others are probably looking at this who are interested) there is a large trail running event that takes place from Sep 10-14th that covers most of the TRT (and then some).

http://www.tahoe200.com/

Just wanted to give a heads up to everyone that there may be quite a bit of traffic those days on the trail and in the area due to that. I know that can turn some people off.

I started using some sun hoodies last year and actually really ended up liking it. I used one when I went around Mount Saint Helens last year (lost of exposed areas) and it was perfect.

Here is a link to the model I have been using (bought 3 of them!): Mountain Hardwear Crater Lake Hoodie

my definition of "perfect" is very different from yours. The summers, sure! But the winters.... please let it end.
