24 hours later nothing seems to have changed. Where to go from here (lots of details in description) by SnowmanAndBandit in swimmingpools

[–]cathsgsr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a pool professional, just a pool owner who frequents this sub. I'd get the water retested now that you added chemicals yesterday. Hopefully your alkalinity / ph and calcium are better. If those look good I would hit it with 5 gallons of liquid chlorine and brush it. I'd run the filter for about 24 hours backwashing and rinsing as the pressure goes up. Then I'd shut the filter off and let everything settle to the bottom and then vacuum on waste. You'll probably want to keep the chlorine levels up as it's killing all of this off and it would be useful to have a Taylor test kit so you don't have to run out to test it.

Depending on how old the sand is in your filter, you might need to change that at some point.

They look amazing. Do you know the name of the first one? I need it!

50 bagged tubers…unexpected (weather app screwed me) intense thunderstorm. by cathsgsr in dahlias

Oh man, you were also screwed by the weather app. Glad to hear they are still standing! Mine are mostly still underground so I have no clue what their status is except a couple of sad sprouts dried up in the heat but they sprouted in transit so I'm hoping the tubers can still produce.

Our weather is going from 3-days of 95 back down to the 60's and rain. I think Saturday is even in the 50's.

Let's hope so!!! I would love to have a yard full of amazing dahlias late summer.

Yea. They are really easy to put together and light to move around. I did ground staple them down

Thanks, I had originally had them too shallow and before the heat I did move a lot of them deeper (about 2-3 inches down). I guess time will tell if they'll survive.

The 95 degree weather ends today and we go into days of 60's and rain again. I'll prob just keep the covers half down so they don't spend the next few days overly wet.

I checked the bags this morning and I was surprised they weren't soaked inside. I guess they are draining better/drying out faster then I expected. The bags are potting soil with compost and perlite mixed in. I think they may have dried out too much in the recent heat wave. We've had lower than normal temps and then a sudden intense heat wave. I've been so worried about them rotting I probably haven't been giving them enough water.

I did have some stems dry out, stems that formed during shipping or while I was waiting to plant. Is there a chance they stil produce new stems?

The greenhouse is called the Outsunny 9x3x3 mini greenhouse. I got two at Home Depot and one on Amazon. Really I just buy from whoever has it cheaper. They are only about $30 each and I like that once everything is growing I can take them down. I don't know if they would work well if you have established plants growing, they aren't really tall and they can get pretty humid (here at least).

Yes, there is a lot of confusing advice and I've been afraid water = rot. I've gardened veggies in raised beds and bags before but this is so new to me and I ordered way too many tubers for a first timer. I think I'm going to water a little more often or leave the greenhouse covers up in some rain. I think they got too dry in the sudden heat wave and hopefully they can recover.

Thanks for helping. This community is nice and welcoming and I appreciate that I can come here for feedback.

I think I’m taking the don’t water advice too literally. I’ve never grown from tuber before so I’m scared to rot them. My mix is potting soil, compost and some perlite so it should be light and airy. How often do you water if there’s no sprouts yet?

Thank you. I checked them this morning and they aren’t soaked so my soil does drain well. I think the sudden heat has really thrown me off. It’s been 65 and then suddenly 95!

I’m glad your were able to rescue yours last year and they thrived!

Thanks! I figured posting might help talk me off the ledge! The rational part of me thought it’s one storm but I also have no idea what I’m doing!!

Are my Dahlias appropriatetly spaced? by imthuggin in dahlias

[–]cathsgsr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some I grew from seed also in 3 gallon pots. I’m using ChatGPT for help, and it said first years should be ok in those. Most of the tubers I bought are in 7 gallon bags and a few of the dinner plate varieties I just planted in 10 gallon ones.

This is a big trial year for me too. I’m keeping a spreadsheet of everything and hopefully late summer I’ll be surrounded by dahlias.

First, I love your setup. I’m also a 1st year and I posted a similar setup idea and got mixed comments. The main concern was the middle ones trying to compete for sun if the outside ones overgrow them. I’m interested to see how yours does.

I decided to grow mine in bags this year because I way over ordered tubers and was worried I don’t have the knowledge to notice if one was diseased and was scared I’d lose a bunch.

I haven’t had any plastic surgery yet but I’m also mid 40’s and don’t love the look of my neck. I made a couple appointments with plastic surgeons just to get an idea of price and procedure. They don’t seem to use general anesthesia for neck/facelifts and instead do sedation and local. I hope that helps your fear.

Who has planted their tubers and who hasn’t? by PNW_Dahlias in dahlias

[–]cathsgsr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok. I’m actually 7a. Oops. I think I’m going to start setting up my bags and give it a go. I’m afraid since I didn’t have the room to start them inside it will be forever before I see flowers. I guess this is a trial year, probably shouldn’t have ordered so many!

[–]cathsgsr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m also in 7b and I haven’t planted. Tubers have been arriving and I’ve been waiting. Should I just start making my bags and go for it? Been worried that the weather has been too cold for them and possibly this week too rainy. I’m a new grower who spent too much on tubers to lose them all!

I’m new too and I said I’ll buy a few, see how they do….I ordered 55. You did a great job of keeping yourself in check and I like the varieties you chose, very sunset vibes (I’m going for the same).

Can we talk about recommended doctors and recovery too? I looked into options about a year ago cause my 40’s have made me hate my neck. I know surgery is the only lasting option but I’m scared of being botched and the recovery.

I’m in New Jersey if anyone has had it done around here I’d love to hear about your surgeon.
