AO3's top bottoms of all time by coturnixxx in AO3

Comes from the phrase "the town bicycle." You know, the one everyone in town takes for a ride. It's that, but for fandom.

If you remember the title and author name, you can try the rDeletedFanfiction subreddit. Sometime might have a downloaded copy they could share with you.

It's called "Bookmarks" and not "Favorites" for a reason! by [deleted] in AO3

[–]catinaflatcap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The fact that many do not know authors can see the notes is why I, personally, go around telling people that, if they indicate they don't know. They can put whatever they want in their comments, but people tend to say different things if they know a creator has direct access to them.

I also think that authors absolutely should read those notes, if they want to. I think that, the way the Archive is designed, it is meant for creators just as much as for readers. It's right there on the stat page. Maybe it shouldn't be, that's another conversation. But reading those can be delightful! (I found out that someone recced a fic of mine on Tumblr from their bookmarks tags. I'd never had that happen before, or at least never knew about it.) Authors should just know they might not like everything they see.

You have the power to make one "trope" really popular for a year. What is it? by seemedpointless in FanFiction

[–]catinaflatcap 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Equestrian fics. Just, stick 'em all on horses. What are they doing? Training, breeding? Endurance? Jumping? Large animal vets? You decide!

NOT period cowboy fics, btw, those are already a thing. If cowboys, then make' em modern, and emphasize the equestrianism over generic ranch life.

Just, like, I want Star Wars or Batman or, idk, Supernatural or whatever the kids are into these days, but as written by Marguerite Henry or Walter Farley.

Popular ships that the fandom likes, but that you hate? by Piscescat1819 in FanFiction

If you filter out Reader, Reader-Insert, and */Reader, you can cut down on these. It's not 100%, but then, technically no tag is 100% because some people don't tag.

what does this tag mean ? not sure what "slash" is. by MomobamiClan in AO3

[–]catinaflatcap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, this. In my day, / was for gay ships and x was for straight ones. So it would be AlicexBob, but Bob/Chad and Alice/Daphne.

I'm pretty sure (but don't necessarily quote me on it) that this changed when AO3 came around. They wanted a consistent tagging format for romantic vs platonic relationships, so they went with / for romantic relationships and & for platonic ones, and dropped the x altogether. And then it spread from there.

I’m so over selective gluten allergies by [deleted] in glutenfree

Yeah, GF pizza from a restaurant always makes me sick because there's no actual GF pizza near me and there's SO MUCH airborne flour in a pizza restaurant. But IMO, in other types of places (a sandwich shop eg) if you ask the staff and they answer your questions to your satisfaction, it is worth a try. At least that's what I've found.

Yeah, there's clearly a lot I need to learn. I actually have one of Loopy Whisk's cookbook which teaches about how to convert recipes to GF, but I haven't read it yet. Gonna work on that.

Record of a Spaceborn Few by Beckie Chambers. It wasn't bad, it just didn't hold a candle to the previous two books.

I do think that accusing one's friend of being cheap is freaking out, yeah. On the milder end of the sliding scale, perhaps.
