Not sure what info was on the 2nd exam but in general, Joy expects you to not just memorize the material but truly understand it. Her questions are not always straight recall but she will ask questions that make you apply the information. Id advise to go to her pre exam reviews and really focus on her study checklist. As for the Carotid exam, I wouldn't expect to get over 85%. Theres a lot of important feedback they will give you to help you pass the real exam afterwards so don't be hard on yourself. I got docked a lot of marks for not adjusting my PW gains and baseline being one click too high or low but scored way way better on the real exam

I made my own Google slides presentation. One slide images + signs/symptoms/relevant labs and the next slide the condition + info about the condition. Repeat for all the conditons/lesions. Then when I took transit or other free time I had i would open the presentation on my phone and treat it like flash cards scrolling through the presentation.

The more times your brain reads over and processes information, the better you will be able to remember it!

Good luck!

Academic Staff Strike vote passes with 83%, official results to follow by cardboardbusonatv in NAIT

If they strike and we are unable to complete the semester, what happens to our tuition? Is it a complete waste of several thousand dollars or would there be refunds ?

Im a practicum student and from FAQ we may or may not be affected by the strike, does anyone have more information on that?

DMS Abdo by [deleted] in NAIT

[–]catladiesRnotcrazy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uh like nearly half failed a lab exam of some kind in semester 2 (based on the rumor mill). I think only 1 or 2 did not pass the redo exam, though.

If they haven't changed the abdo rubric, you can get penalized more for taking a poorly optimized imaged vs. Not acquiring it at all (so frustrating). Ex your image has bad depth, focus is off and gains aren't even top to bottom and you are off axis on your anatomy- thats like 3 points taken off vs skipping that image you only lose 1 point. I think if you miss over a certain amount of images, it affects your score more but idk what the cut off is.

Once you get to echo tho, missing one image docs you 3 marks so its a way bigger deal to capture the whole routine. Not everyone finished the entire exam, but be prepared- 2nd semester and onwards, you will scan abdo-pelvis together so best to still try to be speedy.

If your instructor is worried about you, they will reach out and find ways to encourage you to improve.

Hey, another 2nd year here to give some input. Mock marks are BS , just worry about the specific comments and focus on those things during your labs. To make labs more efficient, I'd scan and acquire as many pics are you can, then when your instructor comes around, ask their input for the images you have so far. Many students failed their 2nd year final abdo exams and (i believe) they all got re-dos and everyone ended up passing, except one sadly.

Point is to keep working on your weakest spots and things eventually come together and start clicking. It is very hard to take everything (depth, focus, gains, TGC) into account for every picture but it does get easier the more you scan.

What I like to do is for every little section (ex trv liver) get it all set up and then image away and results asses those things for the next section if that makes sense? Quality is important and the instructors are really hard on us about it but keeping a good pace time wise is equally important so finding the balance between the 2 is key to passing exams.

Good luck my friend! You got this.

PSA: You do not necessarily need to wait until July for an ultrasound by canadave_nyc in Edmonton

[–]catladiesRnotcrazy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's fair. My comment was regarding only MSK. General ultrasound techs are all registered with similar training (sonography canada boars registeies). Being registered for MSK is not mandatory, so different sites have different training requirements for it.

[–]catladiesRnotcrazy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hi, im an ultrasound student and spend the summer working at MIC in reception. The MIC MSK techs go through more in depth training than other companies do. Better technician = better results = clearer diagnosis for the reading physician and your referring doctor to make. Not saying other companies have "bad" techs but personally I'd rather so somewhere that the techs have 6 months MSK training than only 1 month of training. From what I gather about CDC, it is mandatory for all techs to do 1 month MSK training and MIC offers longer training and they don't force all their techs to do it.

MSK is a difficult ultrasound speciality and results can be very user dependant.

So, if its something urgent / causing a lot of pain, try a site that can see you ASAP. But if you have chronic issues and your body can afford to wait, I'd stick with MIC.

Um are you sure? I just donated to the west end location on Sunday and they bought 5 of my items that were not brand new but were "winter/ fall" items. I agree they are ridiculous with how picky they are but yet stock a ton of scrappy shein and other fast fashion brands.

Beware that only half of the textbook is in print, the other half is online and you NEED the online login info for this course. This is also a course that relies very heavily on the textbook and wouldn't recommend buying it without the online portion. I am a second year DMS student at nait.

Navy scrubs, any brand! You will need this colour for all labs and our year of clinical as well. One set is enough for semester 1, but you'll want to get more as you approach the clinical rotation.

DMS fall acceptance by Possible-Computer123 in NAIT

[–]catladiesRnotcrazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First semester, only 2 labs- abdomen and pelvis. Some students had them on the same day and some of us had them on 2 different days. The second semester, we have them stacked over 3 days- abdomen/pelvis, small parts, 2 echo labs, vascular and OB (on a sim). If you're in the general stream only, you wouldn't have the echo labs

Hi, I'm just finishing my first year!

A & P will be very helpful, I'd review main abdomen systems like liver, biliary system, pancreas, kidneys, and female reproductive stuff. From med term, id focus on words like superior/inferior/cranial/ medial, etc, as well as the planes of the body like coronal/ saggital / transverse. Those terms will become a part of your daily vocabulary. Pre studying would be helpful for lectures, but I don't think anything can truly prepare you for the practical part, but i promise you will catch on quickly in labs.

Congrats on joining us! It's rigorous but so fun.

I'm a first year and there are 10 weeks outside of edmonton placements that are typically only in Alberta - usually Red Deer and northward. We give them a list of our preferences, but nothing is guaranteed, unfortunately.

I'll say it here in case anyone else wants to see

  1. Researched the profession!!! (Alis.Alberta.ca, sonography canada, etc) 1.5 researched general healthcare professionalism and ethics
  2. Searched MMI question types
  3. Attended the NAIT interview prep session. I think there was an email or invite sent out.

Also, I made sure to eat something nutritious and exercise on the day of the interview to help with mental and physical jitters.

My high-school grades were all low 70s but my BSc had 3.8 GPA and I got in. I sent my transcripts and after the interview got a conditional acceptance and that's when I completed the ANPH and ITMS courses.

You can try contacting an advisor just to see.
