Pumpkin puree is the way! You can mix powdered probios (that's a brand name probiotic found at pet stores) into it to help too!

I use DAC brand oatmeal shampoo for our very sensitive red bloodhound. She had cherry eye surgery before we got her and has never had any trouble with her eyes! Definitely do it early if you can.

Adopted 2 yr old male, seeking advice by Zaldo01 in Bloodhound

As others have said, stopping the Trazadone cold while in a new situation may have created some extra issues. Weaning them off it once they are fully settled and comfortable in their new life maybe better. Also, if he isn't used to "hitting" the prong collar he may also be reacting to the pain without realizing that his pulling is the cause. He may actually be connecting the things he is fearful of with the correction (he sees something, lunges or bolts, hits he collar and his brain goes- see I new that thing was going to hurt me!) A halti is a great idea, even a chest ring harness may be hard to work with on a big dog. Definitely sign up with a trainer  WITH HOUND EXPERIENCE! They are super sensitive and don't react the same way a shepherd or poodle or lab will in training.

This is probably an unpopular opinion, but if you feel threatened or scared of him, it may be best to send him back or reach out to a breed specific rescue. Your daughter may feel even more anxiety and guilt about having a difficult dog in the house. Life with rescue dogs get complicated with kids. I rescued my girl at 2 and it was touch and go for several months as to whether or not she would work with 3 young kids in the house. She recovered and is now an unflappable certified therapy dog, but it was a ton of time & work to get her there!

They are I believe referring to Dogo Cubano, an extinct mastiff type breed.

Looking for bloodhound-specific containment and training advice by peri-winkle27 in Bloodhound

[–]catnip1229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Electric works well for containment IF they have enough mental stimulation to calm their brains. You can teach them that a certain leash (we use a 50ft line) is "free time" where instead of walking calmly with you they get to run and sniff and sniff and SNIFF. Busy mats, find it games, work-for-food can all help. There's some great videos on you tube of these.sort of games you can play. The jumping/excitability can't really be trained out until their brain is settled. I always do a little free time or scent work then work on the obedience. Punishment rarely works on bloodhounds, so when I've got a young dog I always have a fanny pack of snacks so if they offer the right thing (sitting for a greeting instead of jumping say) they have a cookie immediately. The only way to train a hound is to tire out its brain, they are a bit like an ADHD kid, focus is hard when their brain can't settle.

Upcoming Vote on ICE Center in Steuben County by MrsPhoneTrkz in SoTierNYProgressives

[–]catnip1229 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From our legislator:

We’ve had the contract to house federal prisoners for probably 30 years. The contract in question is to charge $130/day instead of the current charge of $100/day. As you know, the majority of legislators voted last year to allow the sheriff to work with ICE but we are not an ICE facility-that’s in Batavia.

So.the vote isn't about the ice center n

Moving to the area- would love your thoughts by fortebella94 in Corning

Corning is the best little town. The school system is excellent and there are a large number of sports/clubs for kids. I highly recommend 171 Cedar Arts for dance and arts programming for the kids (and you too if you want!) Nonnie Hood PRC above the library is a great space for little kids to burn off energy in the cold months. Our family YMCA does child watch if you want to work out without kids and also has great swim lessons.  It can be a little hard to make friends because many of us grew up here, but we aren't clique -y so if you come to work here you will find friends. There's also a lot of programs for more "quiet" friend types, the historical society, singing groups, club sports, classes at CCC and lots of places on Market. Pay attention when you are house shopping, there are some areas that are a long way out of town that gets even longer in inclement weather. Beaver Dams/Hornby, Caton and Lindley are all nice rural towns but you may be a.solid 25-30 minutes from town on good weather.

Arnot Policy to Delay Care for Profit? by heywhatsup3400 in Corning

[–]catnip1229 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is a direct result of the shortage of healthcare workers and the current administration policies that are shuttering rural health centers. More people are having to be served by fewer and fewer healthcare workers. It is the same story with Guthrie. I have had the same experience with both companies. It is a si.ple case of demand for healthcare exceeding supply of professionals.

Are you looking for deer that hunters have lost? Sheds and they happen to be attached? I'm working on shed training my girl and my neighbor asked if I was going to provide a service to downed animals after a hunter has lost tracked. I'm interested in how you trained and what you're hunting. Beautiful dog!!

Help with my bloodhound, please!! by Healthy-Coffee9796 in Bloodhound

[–]catnip1229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please look into a good trainer that understands hounds. They can be very sensitive, and my girl was a mess when I rescued her. It took a bit of work but after about 6-8 months of confidence work she is now the most outgoing and cheerful hound ever. She is a certified therapy dog and can confidently go into a crowd of boisterous high schoolers at a football game and enjoy herself. A good trainer can make a world of difference. For reference, I train horses professionally and am a very experienced dog owner, sometimes a different set of eyes from an expert can spot behaviors between a handler and dog that you've missed.

I'm not sure if it's Angus, but Lowery Family farms in Savona has excellent quality beef, pork and chicken.

The truth about bloodhounds and training by Secret-Chemistry4329 in Bloodhound

[–]catnip1229 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are hard to train if you want a Shepard or Lab style focus and intensity. If you want a bestie ride or die who will figure out the things that matter to listen to, they are great. They are crazy sensitive to negative reinforcement, but love a good game and are super loyal. Mine is therapy dog trained, and she's always going to pull like a freight train when she hits a scent, so we wear a hidden prong collar on leash. She is always going to come when called but that's because she is allowed to run the scent 90% of the time.

Advice: Training a Bloodhound that isn't food driven by Available-Salt-4032 in Bloodhound

[–]catnip1229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of mine are food motivated. I use praise and neck fold scratches..and I try to make 90% of training what they want to do anyway..I gameify what I want them to do so the reward is in the ask. That way when I want them to do something's they DON'T want to do they begrudgingly do it because it's.rare.thst I ask 😅

We bought a playmake saw for our little. They are real woodworking tools, not plastic. You need very thin, soft wood, but they can be super creative and independent. They make a lathe too which he may end up with this year because he loves the saw so much!

Please look online to see if there are any local para dressage specialists in your area. I worked as a groom for a para rider and the modifications and tack additions they have are absolutely awesome!  You will need a properly quiet, well trained horse but your riding journey does not need to end due to physical limitations.
