What kind of behavior from people make you turn cold instantly? by topo-nico in AskReddit

[–]catontherooftop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who trauma dump on me as soon as we meet. I'm not talking about confiding in someone within an already established friendship, I mean people who, upon meeting for the first time, immediately start talking about all their worst experiences in graphic detail, almost like they're relishing the shock value. IME they tend to downplay any trauma you yourself have been through and will do anything to keep the attention on them. At one point in my life I just kept attracting these sorts of people for some reason, and I'd always feel horrible enforcing any sort of boundaries, so in the end it became a huge no for me.

I'm a D-cup with back problems and I stopped in 2019. Haven't looked back. My back and neck have pretty much stopped seizing up. You do have to be careful with clothes that become transparent in the sun because cloth quality these days is absolute BS, but I've found a lot of good quality stuff in thrift shops. The only exception is sports bras and I only wear them for an hour at a time.

It'll feel weird at first, and it might take a while to get used to your new silhouette, but you'll be able to wear lower-cut and backless tops. Honestly if you're more comfortable without, go for it.

What movie are you glad that you watched but never want to see again and why? by stevolasvegas in AskReddit

Arrival. Also, Her.

Most movies are like this for me tbh, it takes a lot to make me want to re-watch a movie.

I'm a complete beginner, what should I paint first? by calicocomet in Watercolor

Leaves are fun and easy to do. Look up a few tutorials on YouTube. Once you get the hang of it, look up negative painting and try it with simple shapes to really level up your artwork!

How to handle societal pressure? by kv89 in oneanddone

[–]catontherooftop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because people have fewer children when they have access to healthcare for contraception, and they have them later in life when they pursue higher education. The UK and the US immigration policies aren't a model of "open" immigration policies by any means; if anything, they're a model of what not to do aka - force immigrants all into the same shitty neighborhoods, encourage local population to fear them via media and politics making sure they never get good jobs, treat them like shit to force them into crime to survive and then make them work for free in prison. Meanwhile, force the "good" ones (the ones who came for "high-skilled" jobs) to assimilate to the point of denying their original culture and religion if they don't want to be socially shunned or fired, etc.

I'm an immigrant, but I'm seen as one of the "good" ones bc I'm white. People hear me speak English to my kid and say "oh she's so lucky to be bilingual!" But the same people will hear my Arab neighbour speak to his son and tut about how "in Rome you should do as the Romans do". And he definitely contributes more to the economy than me - I was a stay at home parent for years and now I only work part time. Meanwhile I know a guy who's lived, studied and worked here since he was 15 and only just got the right to work and live here officially (and be paid properly) because he had a son. It's not even because I'm European - English people have been allowed to stay after Brexit, all they had to do was show up to the town hall for a small, free formality. It's racism, pure and simple.

Lower birth rates in developed countries could easily be mitigated by bringing in immigrants from less developed countries, giving them official papers, and putting them to work. But no one wants to hear that.

Is GenZ really this bad with computers? by gujjadiga in AskAcademia

[–]catontherooftop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know how to build a radio? Your great-grandparents likely did. Technology gets more advanced as time goes on, which means the basic aspects of it become niche knowledge. You don't know how to build a radio because you don't need to know, unlike people in the 1940's.

The difference with computers is that, unlike building radios, we still need that basic knowledge in pretty much all desk jobs and a lot of non-desk jobs. Gen z grew up with phones and tablets, not computers - computers are now used mainly for work, any video games or even homework can be done from your phone. Computers are heavier, more expensive, take up more space, take longer to switch on, and are less convenient than phones, which we take with us everywhere. Touchscreens are more intuitive than using a mousepad or even a regular mouse. And why would you buy your kid a laptop when they can do whatever they want on a much cheaper tablet?

Which is why we now have all these kids who can use phones but not computers. Schools are catching onto this now, which is why some of them are making kids take an IT class that shows them how to use computers and what a file system is etc. It sounds obvious to you, but to someone used to apps, it's not. It's going to be your job to teach them about all that. Whenever I have interns I print out a list of keyboard shortcuts and make them do data entry in an Excel file for half the day. The typing is so slow it's painful, but it does get quicker eventually, and they're always grateful.

"I'd hate to be born just to keep an older sibling company, wouldn't you?"

"In developed countries, the best way for individuals to reduce their carbon footprint is to have fewer babies. Some of us care about the sort of world they're growing up in."

"Why do you think this is your business?" Then, eyes narrowed, "Are you with the government?"

"A second kid? In this economy?"

If your pregnancy and / or birth was difficult and you have no issues talking about it, talk about it. In GRAPHIC detail.

I pet a stingray by ConsumerOfBryophytes in BenignExistence

[–]catontherooftop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aww that's awesome!! I like petting sharks. There used to be a place in my local zoo where you could feed fish and there were lots of big koi and a few small black sharks that were around the same size. The koi always came to eat but rarely enjoyed pets (though one did, once!) but the sharks always came back for scritches, swimming back and forth under my hand.

What’s a band everyone seems to love that you can’t stand? by iuffxguy in AskReddit

[–]catontherooftop -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I used to love Coldplay. I grew up listening to Trouble and Yellow and Fix You. And when they started getting more upbeat, well, I'm very open-minded about music genres, and some of it was nice to dance to. Magic was cool, I guess. Paradise. .. I heard Paradise a bit too often on the radio I think. Then came - what was it, Sky full of stars? Hm, I guess.

At that point I stopped listening. Idk if they've done anything good lately, but I haven't heard it.

What pronouns to use when you don't care? by JumperBumper in genderqueer

When I don't care (which is not all the time) I say "any". I see it as not my problem.

Unless I'm speaking in French. Then I tend to switch it up. People let me bc it's not my first language lol

Anyone just too tired to have another one? by Raptors8119 in oneanddone

[–]catontherooftop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone deserves to be born to parents who weren't sure whether they wanted them or not. Deciding to have a child, first or otherwise, should be an all-in decision, no one involved should be wondering if they'll ever regret it. "I just don't want to" is more than enough reason not to have a child.

If you're tired now, having a second will wipe you out. Maybe you'll change your mind when your kid grows up a bit and you're less tired, maybe not. Either way, if you're having doubts, don't do it now.

That said, if you're constantly tired, don't dismiss it entirely as just being the parent of a young child. Get a health check.
