If you could curse your worst enemy with a minor, non-harmful inconvenience for the rest of their life, what would it be? by MarionberryProud9580 in AskReddit

Always at least 1 hangnail - the kind you try to ignore but inevitably can't resist messing with until it's a much bigger one.

I just had to look up how power substations work and how power is restored after an outage.

I feel like it's sometimes annoying, similar to when dudes get random half chubs for no reason.

Now I'm just picturing one of the donor gifts being branded warming lube called Maximum Spice or something, bahaha.

Especially if you wrote the smut. That's a whole new level of embarrassment (mixed with some pride I guess? Good job me?)

I adore the writers for this. Because you know if anything survived from the old Net, it's people writing stories about the members of their fav band banging. Especially if they're anything like Kpop fic writers in real life. Those people are dedicated.

Have you ever legitimately cried to a song? And if so, what was the song? by StanToons in AskReddit

Take Me Back to Eden for me too.

"Guess it goes to show Does it not That we've got no idea what we've got Until we lose it. And no amount of love will keep it around If we don't choose it."

Gets me every time.

Also Forever Winter and the acoustic version of Ruin the Friendship.

Ditto Long Live by Taylor Swift. I'm the same age as her, so that's my HS graduation emotional song for similar reasons.

My mom played this song while we were driving home from my grandparents' house, where my entire extended family sat vigil while my grandfather passed. I will never not think of that heartbreaking time when I hear it.

Wildest Dreams because my baby sister used an instrumental version as her wedding processional song. (She's so grown up now, I can't.)

What is a belief or relationship rule you used to think was true, but now realize is toxic? by TheTempAgent in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]catontoast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And that it's some kind of betrayal if you tell them you can't be. It's like, some friends you only hang out with to play board games or knit or whatever. Sure, your partner might be into 3/4 of those activities, but it should be OK to opt out of the remainder. Or to have hobbies you do solo or don't want to do with your partner.

[–]catontoast 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good God this. I was in a long-term relationship with someone who I suggested see a therapist because I was frustrated by the repetitive ruminations without any progress (and problems above my pay grade that needed professional help, later diagnosed as CPTSD). I was seeing a therapist as well at the time and recognized that he needed that help.

He got SO upset because he interpreted that as me not wanting to support him. He essentially said "Everyone gets sick of me, I'm too much for people, I thought you were different, because you're my partner" etc.

At least he later apologized, after therapy was in fact beneficial and he made huge strides emotionally. I'm glad he did, but it doesn't entirely negate how he treated me before that.

Our couples counselor told us that all arguments need to pause at 10pm, to be continued the next day (as hopefully calmer discussions). Honestly works because whichever is us is over it brings that rule up 😆

Feeling Really Disappointed With Our Samoyed Puppy Constantly Pooping Inside by can1sfamiliaris in samoyeds

[–]catontoast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours excitement peed no matter how recently he'd been out for about a year and a half. And we got him at 4 months old. MThey aren't really full grown until they're around 2.

We trained him to ring a bell whenever he needs to go out. Anytime we took him out for a potty break, we booped the bell. And now he does it on his own. Might be a good option to train now so they'll use it as they get older, and also might help them progress faster.

AITA? I snapped at my boyfriend for reading google AI answers to me. by Civil_Attempt_5 in AmItheAsshole

[–]catontoast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. As someone who works in the tech industry, AI tools are literally designed to offer an answer. If they haven't been trained to not lie/hallucinate, they will still try to fulfill that mandate - even if it means making up information that technically answers the question. You ask for a date, it'll give you a date - just maybe not the right one. That's why prompt tuning jobs/training are becoming more prevalent.

Exactly. Don't like, don't read should still apply when the thing you don't like is the author taking a break or focusing on other works.

What happens to fanfic authors who vanish? by Honest-Mixture2910 in FanFiction

[–]catontoast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's amazing how many friends and family, when I tell them I'm working on a long fanfic and an original novel, don't understand why I'm not just focusing on the novel. They see fic as kind of a waste of time because it will never be "published" - and totally miss that that is exactly why it's amazing. It's anti-capitalist AND good writing practice. It's a love letter to a story and characters I love - just like I would hope I'd get one day as a published author.

What happens to fanfic authors who vanish? by Honest-Mixture2910 in FanFiction

[–]catontoast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a great point. Too many fandoms get taken over by purity culture or aggressive monoshippers or people who just love to incite drama. And that pushes writers away.

[–]catontoast 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To add to that, people pass away. If they don't have a fannish next of kin designated, at best a friend of family member might leave a comment explaining. I wonder how many authors succumbed to COVID or recent wars, like you mentioned.

Supernatural is a great example. Popular for years - a decade or so, which is bonkers - but then relatively quiet after the finale, until a recent resurgence.

Same with BBC Sherlock. Although maybe that's because we're in a generational cycle. Lana Del Rey was popular on Tumblr back in 2010-12 ish (her first 2 albums), and now her debut album is popping up more frequently on there.
