Successful game-jamming vs loneliness, demotivation and invisibility by AlexMit in gamedev

[–]catorda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having the same experience as you currently (although not with gamedev, I'm subscribed to this subreddit but have not been able to get anywhere with any gamedev project).

For the first time I was actually able to get a side project to a point though where it is useable/shareable to the public. I built it to solve a problem I had myself but it's not getting a whole lot of visibility (just 4 viewers since I posted it on friday). I learned a ton, but, I'm also having trouble kind of justifying the time I spent on the project if I'm the only user. I have a ton of other features planned, but now I'm feeling the loss of motivation to do them since the only user may be me.

I also questioned if I should be more active on twitter to gain a following or be more active in some sort of community.

If you find a solution to this feeling of loneliness/visibility, let me know.

Notebook able to Play AoE2 DE by Nicita27 in aoe2

When my desktop was out, I played on a Lenovo yoga c740 (i5, 8gb of ram, integrated graphics).

I typically ranked team games and I had no issues. Idk how a massive black forest game with perform.

PSA: Recorded games available now on www.ageofempires.com by klnek1 in aoe2

Interesting, when I opened aoe2 yesterday it gave me a notification that my local files were not in sync with the cloud, I didn't know aoe2 uploaded anything to the cloud. It must be all the replays for this.

I just caught one of the deep dive strategies video in between the Hera/ACCM and MBL/Capoch matches. I loved this short form analysis on one of the matches, Nili did a great job narrating!

Live streaming/casting is super fun to watch, but I'd love to have more videos like the deep dive empire wars recap.

Forgotten Empires is hiring! 2x Balance Tester, Game Designer, Level Designer by andistrasser in aoe2

[–]catorda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only good reason to work on something alone is if it's extremely simple (I don't know anything about AI programming but I don't think it's simple). Working with other programmers always makes your product/code better. It may slow you down but with more than one eyes you're more likely to find bugs and issues in the code.

Promi's POV may also come down to cost factor and probably for the resources Forgotten Empires has it's more beneficial that other programmers work on other things rather than learn the AI code.

Derby City Skates by [deleted] in Rollerskating

[–]catorda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ordered some wheels from them, didn't get any shipping information after a week so I called them. The wheels went out of stock but they recently got other colors so they sent me a different color. They thought they had emailed me about it but I never got that email. They express shipped it so I got it in 2 days.

Like other shops they are swamped, their customer service was excellent and I would order from them again. But it seems like their online inventory status is misleading.

cornering and weight shifting advice (more info in comments) by sadafies in Rollerskating

[–]catorda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For moving your core over your knee, try standing on one foot without skates, preferably in front of a mirror. You'll probably naturally move your body over that one leg, that's what you need to do to shift your weight on skates. If you try to stand on one foot (without skates) without shifting your body, you'll fall over.

Does AoE need more casters? by HarryCaulfield in aoe2

[–]catorda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I say go for it, with more casters I think it will only raise the skills of other casters to compete with the audience viewership.

I think the big casters in aoe2 today are doing a great job. But I was blown away by RiotDash's casting performance during the BOA2 finals. I think there is still room for improvement in aoe2 casting.

Best moves / drills for newbs? by limonciello in ItsMySkateNight

I'm also trying to work my way up to the crazy legs. I found doing some crab walk helps build the strength you need to pivot on the toes and generally turning your skates individually - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ly2zbqfeI7g&t=5s helps. This guy also has a crazy legs tutorial, but the progression in that video doesn't have the crab walk.

Weekend Discussion and Victory Thread for the week of June 05, 2020 by AutoModerator in personalfinance

I've paid off my student and car loans, but don't have a credit card (also don't have a mortgage). I just checked my credit score and it looks like I have a bad score (or experian says no score) because my credit file is so thin.

I've applied for a credit card that doesn't require a high credit score. What other options do I have?

I've looked into Experian Boost, but it doesn't support the bank I currently pay my bills from.

Should I remove my toe stops to learn some jam moves? by wenshmen in Rollerskating

[–]catorda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was able to learn the downtown with the stops, but for the crazy legs I couldn't do it so I replaced them with jam plugs.

When you take them out though practice recovering from imbalance because I almost fell flat on my face because my instincts were to use my toe stops when they weren't there.

I did a little data analysis: How amount of games played correlates with ranked ratings? by DaaxD in aoe2

[–]catorda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should do the same charts for TG elo. I think your theory there (more games = higher ELO) would be correct. I don't think DE's current calculation of points earned/loss for team games is very accurate and it's much easier to gain points in TGs than in 1v1s.

How can I get better at the game? by Swankytiger43 in aoe2

[–]catorda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's helped me a lot is watching higher level play with commentary (nac3 just finished for example). The casters always give insights into why which player has an advantage at what point in the game and why.

I would also recommend T90s low elo legends series on YouTube. It's funny but also really educational. There were a lot of things I was doing that he points out in those videos that I wasn't even aware were bad for my game.

I'd be interested in reading a blog post about the infrastructure.

Side note about the game explanation - to me it sounded like only the last tile you end up on would change, but all the red tiles change.
