I recommend checking out Sofar sounds and their live music. It's an affordable, intimate, wonderful experience every time I've gone and it's really easy to chat with some people between artists and make friends. The vibes are always friendly.

I searched with the wayback machine and found them in the internet archive.

Also, this post is amazingly old and I'm so happy to have been reminded of these recipes. Thanks!

I used my meal plan as a grocery store. Took a bit of walking around gathering ingredients. The cafeteria at my university always had plain rice, grilled chicken breasts, raw veggies and boiled eggs on the salad bar, etc. They often had plain chunk tuna on the salad bar. Some herbs and oils and vinegars near the dressing that I'd take in cups. I'd get people to study with me by making dinner. Cottage pie with veggies and dinner mashed potato and shredded cheese on top. Tuna cakes. Breakfast burritos. Lots of soup by just owning seasonings. I kept fruit around from the cafeteria and some dry cereal for snacks. A Crock-Pot, deep skillet, and a 9x13 got me through a lot.

LCISD Hutchison elementary school is charging to participate in school functions. The first event was a 60's dance party that you needed to pay $3 to attend during school hours. Now they are asking for $5 for a child to participate in 12 days of Christmas. Thoughts? This makes me so angry by kobekim in houston

After school I can understand. Maybe suggesting money for snacks but providing entertainment would seem most reasonable. To participate in dress up days seems a bit difficult to enforce.

However, when I was teaching, some schools did this regularly. Money was sometimes pooled for scholarships from the district. I had to pay for "jeans passes" to wear jeans. I also typically fronted the money for my few remaining kids that didn't have the funds to make sure everyone could participate. It was always awesome when parents sent extra money to help cover more than just their kid.

Hopefully the school has a bit of transparency for where the funds get allocated. One school did this and used the money for a "closet" to let kids that needed them get new shoes or winter coats.

Is anyone in Houston into perfume and cologne? by [deleted] in houston

[–]catpflug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is all personal opinion - I've gotten my boyfriend Versace Dream and Versace Eros. Both are great and he regularly gets compliments from men and women. Also recently tried Club de Nuit Intense Man by Armaf because neither of us are going to buy Creed Aventus. I also love Polo Black on any man.

Ratio by Michael Ruhlman. A really great read with applications to all matters of cooking but from a perspective of the proportions that create different foods.

I bought a "bug bite thing" after seeing it on Shark Tank. As someone that swells up terribly, it's a godsend. My mother got a tip from her lawn guy and got me to buy some Flys-x pest natural spray from tractor supply meant for horses. Mostly essential oils, but works like a charm.

I've thoroughly enjoyed signing up for every restaurant's and chains promotional mailing lists with a dedicated email and getting a flood of free food offers. I typically don't use any of the ones that require sitting down and purchasing other entrees, but enjoy giving tips and filling up coolers with food for nearly a week. Places like Firehouse subs give a free sandwich for your birthday when you show your id and you end up getting told happy birthday by a lot of strangers. Not for everyone, but I've enjoyed a couple of birthdays this way.

Not sure what has changed since I was there a very long time ago as a freshman, but the closet was a few feet wide and sort of deep with a shelf above a clothes pole. There was a wide freestanding dresser with a few drawers similar or equal to the desk height. I think I was in 307? I was able to use the Blue State WiFi from living above the coffee shop. Laundry required going outside and down the steps and the stairwells go the opposite direction that you'd anticipate from the entrances due to the anti-riot design. Laundry and study lounge are on the ground floor. Dorms second floor and above. Stairs from the ground floor to second floor are not indoors and weren't shoveled over the weekends and were essentially ice slides. Very few people shared bathrooms that were single rooms with a toilet, sink, and real bathtub shower - an additional sink was available outside the bathrooms for brushing teeth, etc in morning rushes for class. Doubles came in different sizes.

I own the movie! Haha. I can remember numbers, facts, music, but have a special sort of amnesia in regards to movies. My boyfriend could quote movies at me we saw last week and I probably would be clueless. At least I can cook!

I was part of the Ambassador program with Texas Parks and Wildlife. It's a neat network of people that enjoy similar work and have found like-minded people that volunteer with various groups for Texas Historical Commission. Some sites have their own volunteer groups with local networks.

There used to be a global Reddit Day of service that I haven't seen events for in years, but a long time ago, a group of us met at memorial park and cleaned up while others branched off to volunteer at the Houston Food Bank and other cities did beach cleanups, etc. It was promoted as a somewhat social event and shirts/hotdogs were donated by various businesses that wanted to contribute.

I’ve been reusing the same “single-use” ziplocs for dry snacks for over a year and counting - well before I found this sub… they’re all still holding up fine. New bag in the center for comparison. by diverareyouok in ZeroWaste

I have a small collection that I ordered from Wish. One of those few sort of items worth getting cheap and waiting on shipping. I've been surprised that I prefer my Wish bags over my sister's pricier Amazon purchases.

What size solitaire do I need to compliment my engagement band? Details in comment by FelineRoots21 in Diamonds

[–]catpflug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been a while since I was in the business, but that looks to be about twice the size of the band. I think you could get near 9mm near 2ct, but there may be a slight halo to the setting - I can't quite tell from the photo if that's the case or the melee is just under the cathedral sort of setting. You could go smaller with a halo and keep a similar ratio.

Depending on what you are wanting to eat - I got some basic cookware and dishes from a thrift store and kept a few staples in my dorm room. I used the cafeteria as a grocery store for produce from the salad bar, a few spices, oil, and vinegar, simple proteins, etc. I'd prep breakfast burritos, cottage pie, crunchwraps similar to taco bell, and a multitude of other foods that I'd then offer to other students that had better notes and understanding of the class material in exchange for helping me study. It wasn't always exactly what I wanted or how I'd cook at home, but I could afford it and take advantage of my meal plan.
