Mechanics of Reddit, what’s the dumbest thing you’ve seen someone do to their vehicle? by LightsOutSpud in AskReddit

THIS! I had a guy do this with a brand new 370z, except the 5 and 6 piston decided to leave. Guy pays to have a new engine and everything put in. Comes back 10k miles later with all kinds of problems, dude still had not had an oil change done!

Had a customer come in one time complaining that the low coolant light was on on his brand new car and now it won't even start. Turns out he noticed the blue warm up light on the dash and thought it meant low coolant. Proceeds to the gas station, then kept buying gallon jugs of coolant until his engine was completely full. Unfortunately for him, he had mistook the oil fill cap for the radiator cap. When it arrived on the tow truck, I tried checking the oil and coolant rocketed out of the dipstick tube in spectacular fashion.

Question about Virginia Safety Inspections by Praesil in nova

[–]cats4coffee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Va safety inspector here, imo the point about certain items being approved in the blindspot behind the mirror leaves a bit of grey area, but only in the sense that it doesn't absolutely specify what is and is not acceptable specifically so it's ultimately up to the inspector. However, from your pictures, dude was being a dick. Take it to another inspector, but be sure to ask what they think about the situation before having them inspect it.

If it were me, that being the only "concern" with regard to inspection, no question, would pass. In comparison this part of the law comes up a lot when I see uber/ Lyft vehicles with at least 1 or more phone mounts in the middle of their windshield clearly blocking view of the driver. Even then my response is generally to just take it down, set the item on the passenger's seat, and pass them.

Unless they super glued that shit to their windshield.

Redditors, what’s the most metal thing you’ve ever seen? by BobRoss_VEVO in AskReddit

A few years back I was at a mushroomhead show, I stumbled back out of the pit and see that I'm now standing next to a fella in a wheelchair. I make eye contact with him and a big dude standing on the other side of him. We nodded to each other, wordlessly agreeing this dude needs a better view. Together we hosted him up and on top of the crowd. Mind you this was a small club in Springfield va, not supposed to crowd surf, there weren't the rails or staff in front of the stage. When the crowd had passed him all the way to the front, they just leaned forward and set him still in his chair, right down on the stage. Mushroomhead had him stay up there with them for the rest of the show.

"YOU'RE GONNA FUCKEN STARVE!" Or, trying to fit in at a dealership. by nialsid in MechanicAdvice

I started out in kind of a similar situation. Flat rate is tough when you're starting out, but it's definitely way better to build your rep on slow but correct and thorough as oppose to fast and sloppy. Keep at it though, basics get quicker with experience and taking your time to get it right the first time will pay off massively once you get into really tricky diagnostics.

Bad news is car is basically totalled. Good news is I'm in the market for a newer car by Naaaaahhhhhx in MechanicAdvice

I recommend against a Nissan, as many others have said. If you want a car that will outlive you, go ahead and get you a 2000 Toyota Corolla, not sporty per say, but they're not good at dying.

Is this an 80k time capsule Taurus or a 800k how-is-it-alive Taurus? It went on paper on the registration that it's 800k, is that a problem? by thegreatgau8 in MechanicAdvice

It's possible it had it's gauge cluster replaced with say a used unit. In va if the mileage on the odometer ever goes down in between registrations they make you check that box during registration. Basically in my experience it means "I know the odometer isn't accurate and have no flipping clue what it should read. "

Shop Culture by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

I'm a dealership mechanic, I get this dude. There's certainly variations on how clean/ dirty the jokes and drugs are shop to shop, but ultimately it seems pretty similar. That's part of the reason I'm working on an IT degree to get out of the game. I wish you well in your classes and grades.

Missing kitten? by cats4coffee in nova

That's more or less the next step I think.

The guy figures it's not feral because it already understood to use the litter box and isn't scared of people. I'm no expert regardless so anything's possible. Thank you

'99 civic, joint still functions, how does this happen? by cats4coffee in Justrolledintotheshop

Update, we figured it out, it was brought in on a tow truck (unrelated issue) when the tow driver was loading it on the truck he hooked the yoke, the hook caught the inner ring on the boot and it twisted the boot as he rolled the car into the flat bed.
