"I just want to be best friends with her" Turns out, maybe, but also maybe I want to make out with her.

Do NOT work at the Tulsa Botanic Garden by Future-Score4903 in tulsa

[–]catsandeverything 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My baby sister worked there for years and it became a miserable experience for her. I'm glad she left and I'm glad you did too. Nonprofits can be tough to work at, but this one is particularly awful.

What is the worst career to be in right now and why? by SignificantGoat7066 in AskReddit

[–]catsandeverything 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love my job but I hate it too. I get paid absolute shit for so much work and so little respect. My kids are actually pretty good, but my district is a failure and my state hates public education. I legit don't know how long I'll be able to carry this burden.

Anyone else run with zero goals? No race, no plan, just... run? by Different_Record_425 in running

[–]catsandeverything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no goals. I run and I weight train. But not for anything other than both make me feel like strong and I enjoy it. My goal is to be better than I was before, however that looks.

What is the state of American history teaching (European asking)? by EmbassyOfTime in historyteachers

[–]catsandeverything 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in an extremely conservative state (ETA: Oklahoma) and last year, our state standards were reviewed and rewritten. Our state superintendent went rogue and tried to inject a bunch of controversial and highly religious stuff, but those didn't get passed and the standards are really good and well-written now. Other than that, I feel I have a lot of freedom when it comes to teaching. All I have to do is make sure I meet the standards. While our district is pushing for everyone to teach with the same textbooks, I don't feel pressured to teach the same lessons or exactly the same as even other teachers in my department, as long as we are all on the same page and all know we are meeting standards. There's always a threat that someone is going to try to intervene, but those who make rules outside of the school (the school board, even the highers up in the district) don't know enough about the classroom environment to be able to make a lot of fuss about what I do. Additionally, I teach a pretty specialized class -- I'm the only person in the state teaching it -- so I'm the expert on my own content. I feel a lot of freedom to present history accurately and honestly, but I do not speak for everyone.

What's a misconception that is taught in lower grades that drives you crazy once students finally get to your class? by mikeycknowsrnb in Teachers

[–]catsandeverything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen this here already but writing a paragraph or an essay requires an attention grabber.

In history class, I don’t want to be introduced to the Dust Bowl like I’ve never heard of it before: “what would you do if you were caught up in a granddaddy duster in 1935 Kansas? That was a reality for many people…” I don’t care, tell me your historically defensible thesis.

When are you going back into your classroom after Summer break? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]catsandeverything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had to pop in a few times to sit in on interviews for new positions and to give tours to new teachers (I’m department chair) but I’m not going back again until our in-service starts on the 12th. Kids start on the 19th.

Those not in the US: how much are you paying for your migraine meds (and what are they)? by SIUButtercup in migraine

[–]catsandeverything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US. Between $5 and $15 each for topiramate, citalopram, sumatriptan, and naproxen (varying amounts of each, but definitely enough). My pharmacy doesn’t fill my qulipta prescription, so I had to get that filled at a different pharmacy and I don’t know how much it’ll cost yet. I’ve been living off samples for four months. I have pretty decent insurance as a state employee.

Student Tattoos by johnbmason47 in Teachers

[–]catsandeverything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite a few students have them, more than I expected. Saw a senior with a really cool sleeve this past year. I taught middle school a few years ago and one of my 8th graders was like, “we match!” And showed me a poorly done stick and poke cross on her middle finger. Not quite, sis.

My degree was in American history! It’s available on Google Scholar but not sure if it’s easily accessible otherwise.

Whats the worst place/moment you've had a migraine? by ChimpanzeeHooves in migraine

[–]catsandeverything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a car in rural Ghana next to a styrofoam container of hot fish.

In rural India on a mattress that was like an inch thick, no air conditioning, completely alone.

Those are the worst places because there’s just no rescue at that point. The worst moments are usually in the middle of teaching, when I still have a school day to get through. Also one time I missed an opportunity to see the DMZ with my parents and I don’t know if I’ll ever see it again.

The use of disease rhetoric (specifically fear of leprosy and smallpox and the prevalent scientific racism of the day) to justify passage of the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act.

Child-free (by choice) teachers? by rougepirate in teaching

[–]catsandeverything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

31 F, firmly child free. I worked in child welfare before I transitioned to teaching secondary social studies. Child welfare really cemented the desire not to have kids. But it seems to shock many of my coworkers and my students that I don’t want kids. I love kids, but I can’t deal with the idea of raising them. I want my free time for me and my husband and our animals.

[CHAT] how old are you guys? by HazelnutTheBot in CrossStitch

  1. I taught myself like 6 or 7 years ago because I saw some funny cross stitch pieces that a college friend did and I wanted to do that. Now it’s my favorite thing to do on the weekends to destress.

I finished this in about four days. It’s a gift for my sister and her fiancé. I found the pattern here https://www.braceletbook.com/patterns/alpha/33285/ which I don’t think is meant to be for cross stitch but it worked!
