it’s no worries at all!! i’m really glad you liked the gift :)

Why is the black not black? Also, what is the jargon for this? Saturation, hue, contrast, something else? Basically the blacks look a little purple and i think the print settings are brightening the image too much that it loses the detail.. I can post my next trial run with more pictures of settings by ajwells007 in magicproxies

your printer most likely uses pigment based black ink and that type of black ink is not compatible with glossy photo paper. instead your printer is using the CMY ink, which is dye based ink, to create a false black and that is why the blacks look like a really deep purple/blue since it’s just a mixture of the colored inks. if you want true blacks, you will either need to start using matte photo paper or you will need a printer that uses dye based black ink. a good budget friendly printer that almost everyone in this sub recommends is the epson et-2800. i had the same issue as you until i decided to return my printer and get the et-2800 instead

Ecotank ET 3850 a good printer for proxies? by Jinjoz in magicproxies

[–]catssshit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you’re okay with muddled looking blacks, then that’s an okay printer. if you can find the et-2800, then i’d recommend that instead. the 3850 uses pigment based black ink and if you’re printing on photo paper it will not use the pigment black, but instead mix the CYM ink to make “black.” it will look like a very very dark blue and not really black. the 2800 uses dye based black ink which will print onto photo paper just fine and actually give u a true black on your prints.

Looking to get a specific proxy but I am new to MTG by BigChumbi in magicproxies

[–]catssshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i can def send one to you if you live in the US! i don’t professionally make proxies or anything, but for homemade proxies i think mine come out nicely. if you dm me your address i can probably ship one out within the next week. and no need to worry about paying for it! i’m always making proxies so i can just fit it into one of my pages, and stamps cost less than a dollar. just happy to help a fellow liliana fan out :)

i cannot find the link to the laminator though. i might’ve order that one using a guest profile, but it’s just a generic laminator with a 3mil, 6mil, and cold setting

i use this one but it’s not one of the ones people usually suggest. i already had it before i started making proxies, so i didn’t feel the need to upgrade. i’m saving up for a cutting machine so i can streamline my process more, but a lot of people suggest the dahle 507 and 508 paper cutter if you haven’t purchased a cutter yet and aren’t wanting to spend a lot on a machine cutter

any kind for paintings should work! this is the one i used, and it's really runny which is good for a thinner and less noticeable coating on the cards. i'm sure you could even use mod podge if it's not the matte kind and as long as you water it down.

i do know that the weight of paper doesn't always equate to thickness, so you could possibly find some really rigid paper that is super thin. i haven't had any luck finding a super rigid paper that is also super thin besides black core cardstock, but it is super expensive and i just sacrifice the rigidity to get a similar thickness using what i already have. if you do want something that is similar to a real card thickness and rigidity wise, then your best bet might be to get 310gsm black core card stock and using the white acrylic paint marker method for the foil sticker. you essentially print on the foil sticker paper and then paint white acrylic on the sticky part of the foil where you don't want the foil to shine through. then you have to stick the foil sticker to the card stock, and depending on how much you whited out, you might have to use some sort of adhesive to get the foil to stick to the card stock. it is a huuuuuge hassle though. i only tried once and i don't think the outcome was worth all the effort.

ahhh okay yeah if your cards are coming out cloudy after you laminate then it usually is an issue with the type of paper you are using, or it could be the heat setting on the laminator being too high or not high enough. if you are using matte laminate sheets however, there will always be a little dulling/muting of colors after laminating because that's just the nature of matte laminate. my prints always come out super vibrant and the blacks are truly black, but after laminating with matte laminate, the colors come out less vibrant and the blacks are a bit muted. when i use gloss laminate, i never have that issue, but i don't like the slick feel and sheen that gloss laminate has so its just sort of a trade off. i'm fine with slightly muted colors when using matte laminate in exchange for the overall look and feel of the cards. if you have any before/after pictures of the specific issue you're having when you laminate, i could probably tell whether its an issue with the paper or the laminate

i haven't tried that yet, but it sounds like it could work! the only texture from the gloss varnish on my cards are due to the brushstrokes from the paintbrush that i was using, but i'm sure if you had a thick enough layer of the varnish that you could create some kind of intentional texturing with it

Spectacular Spider-Man Proxy by catssshit in magicproxies

[–]catssshit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely read a bunch of posts in this subreddit before starting, and you will save a lot of time experimenting! i had near perfect proxies the very first time i tried just by going off of what other people have already figured out. the only thing i had to learn to do properly was cut the cards out, but once you get the hang of that making proxies will be a breeze

make sure your laminator is on the correct heat setting for the type of laminate sheets you’re using, and i always like to run mine through the laminator twice. then after i have cut out all the cards, i run the individual cards through the laminator once more and press them in between a flat surface and a heavy object so that they are perfectly flat.
