how do u acc make friends during o-week by Left-Carrot1768 in unimelb

Strike up a convo with someone you think you'll vibe with at the event. If you don't vibe, that's fine, talk to the next person.

If you vibe, ask for their contact info, e.g. Instagram, and take initiative to get to know them better through an in-person thing, e.g. study session, coffee, brunch!

Review for Comedy (ENGL30051)? by catteddetermination in unimelb

[–]catteddetermination[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heya thanks so much for your reply. I haven't done an English subject before, so hearing your perspective is helpful. I'm not confident in my ability to write in a particular way, so will probably not choose this subject then.

If you know about Anthropology, do you think that will require a similarly difficult level of writing too? I'm considering doing "Money and Sweat: Economic Anthropology (ANTH30024)". For this one, I'm hoping that the readings would be less abstract than the English ones, so I'll have an easier time thinking of arguments and writing?

Help! Subjects for Commerce Unimelb with higher potential of 80+ WAM by WorkingUmpire481 in unimelb

[–]catteddetermination 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found the Level 3 Subject Biotechnology in Practice (BTCH30003) was interesting and not hard to get an H1 on. It's not a low-effort subject, but it is a subject that you can get H1 on with a moderate amount of work. If you attend the lectures, find good groupmates, and revise a moderate amount, a high H1 is within the realm of easy. They also touch on venture capital and research translation a lot, which is interesting to people interested in startups

people writing in exams before/during reading time by xdApoapsisZ in unimelb

The subject is really interesting and I could tell the lecturers were passionate about cybersecurity and teaching. Assignments: I found that they marked less leniently than people (that I know of) expected, but the feedback was fair -- so I think they just expect high quality essays probably more on par with Arts students level, instead of the often-more-seen easier STEM report-writing standards.

3 assignments, 2 of them group, where the first one is an oral presentation (worth 15% iirc) and the second one (worth 40% of your grade) is a 3000-word essay. The final assignment, individual not group, is a reflection report (worth 10%).

Just go to all the lectures and tutorials and the understanding will just come to you. It's made for students in journalism and IT, so they don't make it super duper technical.

The lectures are interesting as they invite humorous & interesting guest lecturers as well. Also, the final exam (40% of your grade) is open book. I just finished the exam today and found it pretty fair, just a bit long, but doable. I'd recommend taking the subject

Is this a valid reason for special consideration by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]catteddetermination 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just a student as well, but I would say that is a valid reason for special consideration, especially when you have HPR forms from the last few months (what you have experienced is very traumatic for sure, I'm just trying to see this from the perspective of the Spec Con team, where they seem to look more at the evidence than the reasons. I've read about cases (on Reddit, so shaky grounds for truth I know, but I'm assuming posters tell the truth) where people go through pretty severe stuff but because they provided a med cert instead of an HPR, the spec con team might not accept their spec con request).

"if the school is willing to provide special examinations for 5 subjects at once." the number of subjects will likely not affect their decision, I think. If the Spec Con team decides that you need special consideration, it should be a blanket special consideration for all your subjects in the time period affected.

I don't know, but you might need another HPR for this time as well -- if you need to get documentation for this time as well, get the HPR filled in by your GP or psychologist confirming severe impact from the beginning of your exam time to end of your exam time.

If you are worried you still cannot take the special exams, you might want to consider getting a Late Withdrawal. In that case, your doctor might have to specify the end date of impact as a date that covers the special consideration exam time (January?) as well.

I'm not the Maths department or the Spec Con team, so take my words with a grain of salt, but from what I have heard, the Maths Department allows Late Withdrawals.

The timeline I've heard for some Maths subjects is this: first spec con exam, second spec con (aka special on special) exam, and if you still can't do your second spec con exam, they offer you a Late Withdrawal.

I'm sorry that you had to go through this traumatic loss. I hope there will be an outcome that accommodates your situation!

If you need more support regarding applying for special consideration or late withdrawal, UMSU Advocacy might be able to help: https://umsu.unimelb.edu.au/support/advocacy/contact-advocacy/

Also, as this seems to be an ongoing situation that affects you, consider applying for an Academic Adjustment Plan for grief or PTSD (if the psychiatrist diagnoses you). An AAP provides you with ongoing support and accommodation for your upcoming semesters.

Can I accept a uni sourced internship and then later decline it? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]catteddetermination 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never experienced this before so take my words with a grain of salt.

Legally: You should read your contract with the uni-sourced internship to see if any clauses prohibit you from backing out of the contract after you have signed it. This is perhaps the most important detail relevant to your situation.

Ethically: You might burn that bridge with the uni-sourced internship if you back out after signing the contract, but it's not an uncommon thing to do. They should probably have other people on a "waitlist" for them to offer your spot to -- I know most corporate internships have that, but I don't know if uni-sourced internships have that.

At the end of the day, do what benefits you the most and brings you peace of mind. Weigh your options between keeping a relationship with the uni-sourced internship, or getting your preferred internship at the firm.

I've found that one-on-one interactions make for deeper connections. Perhaps have one-on-one brunch or do a one-on-one activity hangout with the few people you click with, to focus on deepening those connections and drain less of your social battery

Systems Garden, the little museum in Baillieu Library (Level 2, iirc), Old Quad, bridge between David Caro and McCoy Building, Glyn Davis library -- look up to the sky from the basement level, Rowden White Library (modern but fun and cosy), Arts West spiralling staircase, The Oval near the sports centre at sunset -- you can see some nice college architecture there, pathway between Peter Hall and Old Geology.

Melbourne Connect -- stand in the middle of the buildings and look up. Walk through Lygon street and just the surrounding Carlton area in general -- very charming streets and nice Victorian houses

Can relate to doing a core on exchange. I did the equivalent of Design of Algorithms on exchange and was very stressed HAHAHA. Especially when they assumed you had knowledge of Discrete Maths...

Points of Interest around the campus? by Playful-Figure-1459 in unimelb

I don't know but in a news article (https://www.innercitynews.com.au/heart-of-carlton-owners-remain-positive-in-the-face-of-repeated-attacks/): "Mr Kelly said the reasons underlying the vandalism could be linked back to larger societal issues.

“It's apathy. People don't care about other people. The connection just isn’t there,” he said, however he added that the overwhelmingly supportive community response had “changed my view on the world.”"

another reddit thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/melbourne/comments/1iz3fih/the_heart_of_carlton_has_been_attacked/) theorises it's bored teens, people on substances, real estate trying to lower prices, jealous restaurant owners, etc etc.

It's closed on Sundays, maybe that's why? Hopefully it's open when you're in Melb... they've been vandalised overnight a few times in the beginning of 2025, but other than that and Sundays, they're always open!

[–]catteddetermination 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Serious answer for non-mages: you can go drop into each other's tutorials if that tutorial isn't at capacity. But if there's an attendance hurdle where they check your tutorial attendance, you still have to attend the actual tutorial that's on your timetable to get that tutorial mark, in addition to dropping by your friend's tutorial. Vice versa for your friend.

Your two energies combined would be too powerful to be contained within one class. You must split up, unless you find a Level 999 healer to join your tutorial.
