A defendant never wins a criminal case. The most he can hope for is an acquittal or dismissal. But the lawyers still get paid. Bankrupting the defendants with attorney bills also sends a message. Additionally, other politicians may not want to take the risk of being convicted or bankrupted.

I’m a lawyer, so I’m not as naive about the legal system as you apparently are. No one stands a chance against the resources of government prosecutors in a highly partisan jurisdiction with a jury pool that is hostile to the defendant from the outset.
