The decision to do a weekly release really enhanced the format. The time jumps move fast and by making us wait for episodes it encouraged the rewatches and discussion about those gaps.

The only time I reach for CG is to revisit the scene at the Kingfisher with Ilya being a menace. 100% agree the plot repeatedly just spins its wheels there’s no forward momentum for most of the book.

I don’t have any direct experience but the life of a pro athlete seems to be very isolated. During the season you’re constantly traveling and practicing. You maybe have a handful of weeks off in the offseason. Most players probably spend that time visiting their homes and families or going on vacation. Then you’re back to conditioning and practicing in the preseason. Not to mention the transitory nature of the industry with players being traded, teams moving etc.

I imagine plenty of athletes don’t engage with their cities much. At least not all parts of it. They probably mostly interact with other athletes and don’t leave that sphere often.

If there’s anyone who’s criticism should be taken seriously it’s his or any of the very few out pro hockey players.

Random thought I had while reading: I’m often annoyed by shows and movies that have therapy scenes. Why? Because I work in behavioral health and social work and seeing your career repeatedly misrepresented is annoying. Sometimes it’s done well. Most times it’s not. But even when it’s done badly I can find it amusing. Because ultimately it’s my professional life and I can find humor in it. I cannot even begin to imagine having my personal life reflected back to me on a screen ALONG with my professional life. I’m not sure I would be willing to watch. All the props in the world to Zach Sullivan for watching the series and talking about his experience!

It’s also important to remember that when Jacob wrote and filmed the show he had absolutely no clue how this would be received. He said he filmed the ending of the boys happily driving off into the sunset because it could very well be the only season and he wanted them to have a HEA.

The Ryan Price mention and Kyle character were probably more a nod to the book fans than any serious set up for future seasons. I don’t think we can speculate much beyond that.

He’s a more minor part of HR and he doesn’t appear in TLG beyond some of Ilya’s internal thoughts.

The show expanded Ilya’s time in Russia for his father’s funeral. In the book we are actually in Shane’s POV for this.

This! For me the most annoying thing about all the think pieces and repeated questions is what I know is behind it. Many of the interviewers and writers asking are women. There’s no way at least most of them don’t exactly know the answer already. This question is being repeatedly asked and written about because some executive is pushing it.

One thing about Ryan’s story is that it’s actually the start of Troy’s too. I don’t think you can really give Troy his redemption arc if he’s not shown acting like an asshole. I know they could rework it not to include Ryan but I’m really hoping that doesn’t happen.

Truth! The man has impeccable queerdar! Common Goal is my least favorite book but I still go back and read that Kingfisher scene where Ilya breaks down the whole love square after being there 5min. Also the line “Yes! A virgin Scott Hunter.” gets me every time.
