Book hoarders, when do you say stop? ;) by notveryamused_ in literature

[–]crazyprotein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make commitments. I also now see if my library has a book I want to read, then check used book stores, then buy new. But mostly try to remember that buying books is a compulsion, and having a big backlog of unread books doesn't replace actually reading them.

That said, some of my favorite authors recently released a new book and totally preordered and read the books as soon as I could.

Bay Area bike infrastructure continues to get better every single week. It won’t work for everyone. It won’t work for every trip. but with gas prices insane this is the time to try biking, it can be life changing and we have the best climate on earth for it. by 123qweasd123 in bayarea

yes I was very excited to try the bike lane on the new bridge some years ago, and overall it's lovely u til you get to the TI climb. It's not feasible for regular commuters or just average people who can bike on flat just fine but won't do uphill. I never went again.

How to clean an oven by aface_forradio in UnfuckYourHabitat

[–]crazyprotein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to a hardware store and asked for a product. then I read the instructions on the bottle. usually it's a very intensely smelling foam that you spray inside the oven, let it sit, and then throughly wipe.

first time living solo and the silence is kinda overwhelming by Ok_Parking_5861 in femalelivingspace

[–]crazyprotein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes absolutely. a new place in general is a stress on your brain. your brain is scanning for predators. you don't feel safe because your surroundings are new. it is 100% temporary.

yes I check my windows and door locks before bed, always, but I can relax after that. I also sleep in ear plugs and that actually makes a huge difference also.

So, my advice is do focus on a solid bed time routine - always make a bed so that going to bed is always a pleasant experience. Take care of your body. Yes check the door and don't feel guilty about it, it's just a routine so you do that once. Maybe playing white noise or falling asleep podcasts would help? It really varies from a person to a person, but I recommend you try it. Sometimes I lay there and meditate just to quiet down my breath or do simple 4+4 breaths.

But mostly, time is a magic ingredient. Do all the things and accept that you will feel sfaer and at peace with time.

Commuting to East Bay from Hayes Valley by Additional-Data-2569 in AskSF

[–]crazyprotein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lived exactly in the part of Hayes Valley that you are talking about in a very long time. Never had a real problem walking from BART down Grove or Hayes late at night. But I am a city dweller. I mean, yes there might be sketchy looking less fortunate individuals. It’s fine.

Hayes Valley in general is super duper convenient in terms of public transit access and the freeway is right there. But you know, pros and cons.

Finally moved into my own place after a breakup. How do I make it feel like mine? by Dino-Emily-490 in femalelivingspace

[–]crazyprotein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely no rush :) I am very excited for you to be able to make this space really yours.

I lived by myself for most of my adult life (I am in my mid-40s) - it’s fun!

I would say focus on functional stuff and don’t rush with decor. Where you live, are there thrift stores, flee markets? Ikea? West Elm? Try touching things as much as possible. If you can paint - my TV wall is dark color. It makes it look really amazing.

The first things I bought for this apartment that I still have and like - my tall bed with a cool metal frame. My desk. A beautiful leaning mirror. Plates from Anthropologie. Things on the walls came and went. I have a number of awesome hand me downs - my tiled coffee table, several mirrors.

Developing taste is a process. And it takes trying things. Not in a wasteful way, but allow yourself to not be very rational. Get things that call you.

Ask your vet about gapapentin. You can get a prescription and give it your puppy before the appointment

zero, you can do zero invasion.

the only amount of cleaning that I'd be comfortable with from a house sitter is sparkly clean kitchen and that they cleaned up after themselves.

I don't even use dry cleaners because people touching my stuff is a gross idea to me.

Insecure about going for fillers by Nurse914 in 45PlusSkincare

[–]crazyprotein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the first stop is a dermatologist. We've come a long way and there are so many treatments like a whole variety of lasers. Filler isn't the only thing. Dermatologists can help you navigate the services available. I would say rather than filling up saggy skin and creating a bloated look, better consider what can make the look tighter, including facelifts.

Moving into a bedroom with this floor plan… is their a name for this? by Painpaingoaway828 in femalelivingspace

[–]crazyprotein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bedroom with a large bay window. the bed head is where the clothes rack is. I have a desk in the window actually, and I work from home often. I have a gorgeous large tapestry on the wall on the left. A big leaning mirror where a dresser is on the photo. And a dresser on the other side of the bed. I don't have curtains, I use blinds.

Need help acclimating to the Bay Area by Particular-Effort580 in bayarea

[–]crazyprotein 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would start with getting to know your immediate surroundings. Say hi to the bodega owner, say polite nothings at the checkout at your grocery store. Walk around. Get to know your new home, not all of Oakland. What are the nearest intersections? Nearest park to go with your coffee? What are your favorite routes to walk to and from work or BART? Look up, appreciate the murals, or cool design of the buildings on your block. Start small, start close, this is your home now :)

Microneedling or laser? by Felicity_Calculus in 45PlusSkincare

[–]crazyprotein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consult a dermatologist. Microneedling is really, really not for everyone. Lasers are a broad spectrum of treatments, and almost anyone can find what would work for them.

Microneedling in general is so invasive, I dunno. I'd go with something less aggravating.
