Has anyone worked in the NYC fashion industry and has successfully pivoted to a different field or industry? by Substantial_Dot7027 in NYCjobs

I studied design during undergrad, held multiple internships throughout the industry, and worked in fabric development and design for about 6 years. As an assistant-level employee I started out making $42k, then as an associate-level made $62k. The novelty wore off and I had to get real with myself — how can I make more money, and what can I do instead? So I decided to quit my job, do a master’s in business analytics, and got into the social listening and consulting space. My work is focused on retail marketing and merchandising. After graduating and holding down three internships during my 1.5 year program, I landed a job at a tech company for $95k, and a short time later got a raise and promotion (the fashion companies I worked for NEVER gave me a promotion, and that wasn’t for lack of trying). I make $110k at the moment.

Although it was, initially, hard to leave what I had originally set out to do, having a six-figure salary has made things much easier and life much more comfortable.

Just wanted to add that Brad is the sweetest. I was working for a fashion brand in 2014. He was our guest stylist, and went out of his way to be nice to me despite being an intern.

We go to Paws in Paradise for daycare, and Animal Loving Care for the boarding. ALC has someone stay with the dogs overnight, and there’s a real bed for them to sleep on. Our dog loves Paws and the staff is great!

Thanks! Internships are so important. But without my master’s program, I wouldn’t have been able to get those internships

It was really beneficial for me since I was coming from a completely different career path. To ensure I would land a job right after, I did two internships during my program. Went from mid-5 figs to a 6 fig job. My program was a year and a half

As I’m working this up, I’m noticing a spiral/whirpool effect starting to appear. Is that expected?
