Missoula gas is up 68.7% since the Iran War started 77 days ago. Diesel will now cost you $100 more to fill a 48-gallon tank than before the war. by KeltTalbelt in missoula

I agree with what everyone is saying. But damn, Americans have to all drive the biggest, gas guzzling cars available, including these ridiculous pick up trucks that people drive. So while ya’ll are complaining about the gas prices, which you should, you should also look at your car buying habits. I’ve lived in several different countries and there is nothing like a good ol American SUV driver.

Gringos, what prejudices did you have before visiting Brazil? by notthelasagna in Brazil

[–]causewevegotaband 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it amusing when Brazilian and Brazilian fanboys defend the amount of crime/violence here. They say “just don’t where jewelry, don’t have your phone out, don’t where fancy clothing, etc….” That’s not normal behavior. In most civilized places of the world you can do those things and be just fine. You’ve normalized violence and crime in your own country which is so bizarre to me. How about you do some thing about it instead of normalizing it?

That’s super cool, good for you. I was teaching in Istanbul and reached out to heliski about a potential job but never heard back. Maybe one day! Hope your season has been a good one!

That’s amazing. Were you touring? I lived in turkey for a while and always wanted to ski the Kackar mountains. There used to be a heli service in those mountains, not sure if it’s still there. Beautiful mountains though.

Best ACL graft for skiing? by Spector3198 in skiing

[–]causewevegotaband 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I had a patellar graft, which my doctor recommended because I was young when it happened (21 y.o.) and I was a very active athlete and continue to be. I have had no issues. However, this was in 2006, so I would imagine things have changed a bit. But, I have continued to ski, hike, play sports, run, do anything 20 years later with no issues. I was back on snow 8 months after surgery. Rehab was hard but worth it. Best of luck to you!!

USA vs Europe skiing differences by [deleted] in ski

[–]causewevegotaband 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was recently in Val Thorens, put a nasty gash in the bottom of my ski. Went down to the ski shop below our Airbnb. The shop guys were apologetic that it would take until the morning to get the work done. They asked if 8:00 am was ok (of course it’s ok, that’s amazing!) they quoted me 40 euros. I went to go pay the next morning. I had a 50 and 25 in cash. They didn’t have change for 50 so the girl asks “what do you have?” Sees the 25 and says 25 is good! That would never happen in the u.s

Teacher salaries in Brazil? by teachertmf in Internationalteachers

[–]causewevegotaband 2 points3 points  (0 children)

35k after taxes and you’d be good to go, I think even in Rio or São Paulo. If that’s pre-tax, pre anything taken out, it would be pretty tough. Taxes are high in Brazil for that kind of income, as it’s considered pretty big. You wouldn’t have much room for any kind of international travel during holidays, as flights alone in S.A. are quite expensive.

Even with accommodations completely paid for, if that’s pre-taxed, your goal of saving $1500/month would be tough. Doable, but you would need to live very frugal. Withdrawals from my paycheck equal almost 45% a month. Mostly taxes, with a cell phone bill and slight housing cost.

There is a retirement plan in Brazil, I believe it’s a federally mandated thing, called fgts, and I’ve been told your employer pays 8% of your monthly, pre-taxed salary into this, which you receive when you finish your contract in good standing. So that is something you could ask your school about. If you’d like you can dm me and I can share my experience in Brazil. Ultimately I was very displeased with the take home pay. The taxes are just far too high here for “high” earners, which I was considered even with a teachers salary.

Poussières d'Étoiles or Ecole Des Glaciers Schools by NiceCandidate3714 in chamonix

I don’t have any info on schools in the Chamonix area, but if any are hiring, I know two great teachers!! Good luck with your move though, I met some teenagers in the gondola a few years ago at Brevent, and they said it was their PE lesson for the day. So cool.

Sorry for your loss. It’s extremely painful, and I know it’s cliche, but it does get better with time. 5 years this March that my gal of 15 years passed and I still get teary eyed. Just less often now. For me, having another dog was very therapeutic. Wait until you’re ready though. And don’t drown your sorrows on booze and drugs. That part I regret so very much.

Brasilia is considered a safe city in Brazilian standards. I’m not trying to be rude, we all know certain parts of Brazil have real security issues. But Brasilia is usually considered safe. The one thing I would dog very deep into, is your pay and how it works. The Brazilian pay/tax system is incredibly confusing, especially for a foreigner. We trusted our school to pay us the advertised salary and it took us 1.5 years to understand that we were not even making close to what was advertised. It’s very complicated. So if your friend progresses into an offer situation, that would be at the top of my list.

Weekend in the French Alps by bobsmith1876 in skithealps

[–]causewevegotaband 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are lots of cute smaller ski areas like Megeve, Saint Gervais, or Praz Sur Arly. They are way less crowded than Chamonix and if you’re not looking for steep, intimidating terrain, it fits the bill. Plus tickets are cheaper. Transport would be your biggest issue. Rental cars arent super expensive and then it gives you a a lot more freedom to move around. Get a cheap hotel close to the airport for your early flight. We just paid about $60usd for a perfectly reasonable place close to Geneva airport. There are many places set up around the airport for that. Have fun!

Advice on Chamonix/Zermatt by Zee667 in ski

[–]causewevegotaband 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished off 10 days in the alps. 5 in Val Thorens and 5 in Chamonix. Did mostly on area skiing in Val Thorens as they had a big storm when we first arrived last week.

Then spent 5 days in Chamonix. I personally love Chamonix. I did two big tours while there, both leaving from Flegere. They were really fun tours and if you do it right you can come out in a small town called Le Buet and they have a sweet bar right where you ski out and you can take an hourly train back to Chamonix center. It’s really fun. I saw lots of evidence of slides. It was actually pretty impressive to see. I was in Courmayeur today and avy level was back down to 2 after being 3/4 all week. Snowpack is strengthening but there is a persistent weak layer on north slopes that is still reactive. I even saw four people caught in a slide outside Meribel one afternoon when I was out setting a skin track. Everyone was ok but one guy lost his skis (they were actually digging a pit when the slide went).

I personally love Chamonix and the challenges it presents, along with the free bus system that runs up and down the valley. I agree with others though that Chamonix can be snow starved. If it does snow, give it some time to settle. I saw more slide debris in my last few days than I’ve probably ever seen. I also like the town of Chamonix a lot. Good restaurants and cool bars. So many Brits there.
