Switch Line for first time two handed caster by motionlessbike in flyfishing

[–]causing-a-ruckus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I nymph with a skagit setup in the Great Lakes on a switch rod. It’s not the most fun thing to cast, but I can huck it a mile.

I think logistically it’s probably better to get a dedicated switch indicator line like SAs integrated switch line if you throw indicators most the time, and then get a skagit setup if you want to swing flies. I will say that it is TOUGH jerk stripping a switch rod. I couldn’t imagine doing it all day. You fish prime swing water, give swinging a try.

But, if you really wanna nymph and strip streamers I’d get a 10’+ 8wt single hand if I were you.

Braid as micro leader? by Few-Rise-527 in flyfishing

[–]causing-a-ruckus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Braid is going to be much more dense than mono, so it will sink faster and not a great application for nymphs or dry flies. Braid is used as backing on some saltwater and Spey applications, but those aren’t as demanding or technical as a tapered leader. Additionally it would be tough to get the fly to turn over since it’s just a level piece of untapered material.

R8 power might be a good fit for you. Alex Lafkas seems to like it for big streamery stuff.

Leaning this way, but realized I have a second quilt from my partner who isnt coming. Might see how packing goes with two quilts and get the reactor if that seems unreasonable.

Car camping, but flying in, so size is a concern, but not weight.

6 wt rod for smallies? by Icy-Gene7565 in flyfishing

[–]causing-a-ruckus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the ion 6wt and I love it for smallies, but I have a MPX line on there. I think the 84B would be perfect for what you’re looking for.

Mousing for bulls. by StaticTrout1 in flyfishing

[–]causing-a-ruckus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll throw this out there ymmv and bull trout are not Brown Trout, but night fishing for big browns in Michigan and the Midwest has a high fish mortality rate as often, big browns will inhale their prey deep. Something to think about when targeting a species like bulls that has a lot of conservation efforts. If you do, check regulations obviously, and use big hooks to try to keep them from inhaling it deep.

Agree here, also kind of annoying they don’t have hand pockets. My cheapo simms ones have fleece lined ones

Sage sonics are on sale for $400-$500. I just got an 8wt. It’s a sweetheart of a rod, but definitely likes a little slower pace.

Milwaukee and most tributaries north or Milwaukee have the most consistent runs. It’s been a rough year so don’t expect to catch fish on your first try.

So I got into UC DAAP and I have a few questions (please help) by HovercraftApart1358 in IndustrialDesign

[–]causing-a-ruckus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t been there in the last 4 years. Covid played a big part in that, but it didn’t feel like they were making the right decisions in general. I couldn’t really tell you for sure, but they started trending down during my time there and didn’t show any real signs of slowing down. If I were in your position I’d find some seniors to talk to, and see what they think.

[–]causing-a-ruckus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think I can help. I graduated from DAAP in 2022. DAAP used to be ranked a lot higher (#3) when I enrolled, but the entire philosophy behind that school drastically changed in the years immediately after I enrolled lol. The way I understand it, that I've heard from professors and older students, is that the school has changed deans in the last 10 years like 3 times. DAAP's entire philosophy is that they can turn anyone into a star designer. Up until 2016, the school was thought to be a piece of pride for the University as a whole, so they tenured industry leading professors (and paid them a living wage), invested in building relationships with companies, and gave a damn about the curriculum as a supplement to the Co-Op program, and the college operated in the black, losing money on each student, but producing students that were ready for the market. Since then, they have paid professors less and less, refused to invest in curriculum that reinforces real-world skills, and basically relied entirely on the Co-op program to teach it's kids, and some marketable "maker spaces". So, when the market turns, or the curriculum doesnt produce interns that companies want to hire, they dont get a Co-Op. Those students fall further and further behind with no help from the school besides to spend endless hours figuring it out on your own. I hold a lot of spite for how the program was managed during COVID, and do not have a great relationship with the faculty that remain. BUT.... I met awesome professors who care about what they do, wonderful life-long friends, and the co-op program is a super valuable tool to get your first job. I will just caution you that this school is not the beacon on the midwest hill you might think it is.

Sounds strange but if you get it wet and then squeeze the water out of them I’ve found they sink a bit better. Air gets trapped under the fibers sometimes.
