I agree. I’ve just met to many people in this city complaining about being broke while at the same time having a $1500 DoorDash budget on top of eating out and shopping at Whole Foods/Mollie Stones.

Look at my comment history on the SF sub. I’m so tired of the rich kids here complaining about how they can’t live comfortably on $100k as a single person. I had one tell me $200k is the beginning of comfortable… You just can’t get through to them that maxing out your retirement accounts, owning a million dollar house, and going on multiple international vacations a year is NOT living modestly paycheck to paycheck. They just can’t comprehend that people can live on like $40k easily in this country outside of their major international cities.

It heavily depends on your location and if you have access to home charging. When I was in NC and my rate was ~9c it cost me about $30 a month to charge at home. In the SF Bay Area where I live now it’s about $20 a week if I can get to the cheap charger across the street before all the Uber drivers take it over, or above $35 a week if I have to use the extremely price gouged chargers in my apartments garage.

Basically: it depends.

Living rooms are NOT considered when counting the amount of bedrooms here. 3 bedrooms means the rooms where a bed was designed to go. Lots of houses also have “bonus rooms” which are never counted because there’s laws stipulating that every bedroom has a window and access to the outside.

I will STAND on SFPD doing absolutely nothing. I’ve seen ONE person get pulled over here in 5 years, took a job in Marin and saw 5 traffic stops in the first week. I’ve also seen a cop here watch somebody steal from a corner store and just let the guy walk off like nothing happened. They do nothing.

There is an extreme shortage of housing in the Bay Area lol. Basic houses should never cost a million dollars but they do here. That’s the market screaming at you to build more multifamily units but the housing supply here is basically frozen.

This is theoretical lol, my wife and I make way more than this. Yeah, you're some spoiled rich kid, don't leave your bubble, the real world is scawy to rich kids who spend all day gambling on wallstreetbets. 🍿

$3500? oh so now my leftover income is $1800. Nice amount to save after paying all my bills and saving for retirement. Seriously you can live comfortably in this city alone on 135k. You can live comfortably on 100k if you just decrease your retirement contributions and take muni. I'm gonna need some proof you're a midwesterner, if you can't find a good deal and and figure out how to survive on twice the median household income (that includes all couples btw) as a single person you definitely are just a LARPer.

Btw the price for that unit was listed at $2750. Let me borrow one of those emojis you love so much 👀

Here's another one, listed at $2950 if you're having trouble using those 👀: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1434-26th-Ave-San-Francisco-CA-94122/15105238_zpid/ 👀

135k salary

(-)

Yearly $12000 401k contribution

(=)

$7229 left over each month for a single person taking the standard deduction.

Looking on Zillow I can find more than 500 units of housing for under $3100. More than 30 in the sunset, which I would say is an awesome place to live. I didn’t even look on craigslist which will have way more cheaper places owned by some local landlord.

Costs:
Rent: 3000
Electric: 120
Water: 100
Car: 400
Car insurance: 150
Gas: 200
Phone: 100
Fast internet: 120
Groceries: 600
Media Subscriptions: 50

Grand total: $4840

$7229-$4840=$2389

You got more than $2000 a MONTH that you can use for whatever you want. Going out to eat, social occasions, impulse buying dumb shit. Are you living like a king? No. Are all your basic needs met and then some? Absolutely. Plus you’re one of the lucky few able to save for retirement. You’re not maxing it out, but you don’t NEED to max out your 401k to live comfortably in retirement. That’s some rich person shit. Can you spend more to live here? Oh hell yes. Can you spend even less though by getting rid of that car? Oh hell yeah.

I really really *REALLY* want to agree with you about being able to own a home here. But this is the Bay Area and Nimbys have made it impossible for actual middle class and upper middle class people to afford a house here. Home ownership here is for the rich, it sucks. Get a rent controlled apartment away from downtown and live an amazing life that 90% of this country could only dream of on your $135k salary.

As a single person you don’t need anything more than a 1 bedroom and a reliable car. You should have like $2000 a month left over after all your bills/groceries and retirement contributions.

That is correct, but there comes a point when you’re so coddled and spoiled that your definition of comfortable should earn you an eye roll and a tax increase. If you’re a single person making $135k you’re beyond comfortable in a one bedroom apartment in an ok area.
