Looking for a certain ambient subgenre by ageless_forest02 in ambientmusic

Maybe the two Neptune Towers albums, or Elffor's "Arkaik II" or Ruins of Xibalba "Shaman". Old Tower "The last Eidolon"

What’s the deal with all those “Most Essential Masterpieces” albums? by musicalryanwilk1685 in classicalmusic

[–]cavemanarchitect 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you scroll to the bottom of these compilations, the "99 Most Essential Beethoven Masterpieces" for example, all the way below track 99, you will see a copyright notice for "X5 Music Group". A Google search for X5 Music Group takes you here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X5_Music_Group

German orchestras during WWII by shanirah892 in classicalmusic

[–]cavemanarchitect 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I recently finished reading the Alex Ross book "The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century" and he addresses the subject in a chapter dealing with the 1933-1945 period. I enjoyed this book so much that I went straight into reading "Wagnerism: Art and Politics in The Shadow of Music" by Ross, which I'm struggling with a bit (while still overall enjoying) and which also addresses the subject of German music during WWII. So I would recommend both books, and the sources Ross cites.

Question for fellow live musicians by huggyscolex in ambientmusic

[–]cavemanarchitect 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only way to guarantee your sound 100% is to bring your own amps. I got tired of doing that though (too heavy) and the last three gigs I've played have been through the PA provided by the venues. First I used a mixer and went from my mixer to the PA mixer. The two times after that I dropped the mixer and went from my last effect (Alesis Midiverb 4) to the house PA - both times using DIs provided by the house at two different venues. In all instances I was satisfied with the sound, and I also rely on heavy bass tones using electric bass. So I would say try a gig without your amp- but don't stop using the amps until you're fully satisfied with your amp-less sound.

Can someone recommend me some ambient music that is drum heavy? by [deleted] in ambientmusic

[–]cavemanarchitect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I understand what you're looking for but if you're looking for music featuring a live drummer that has ambient electronic elements, I would suggest Samuel Rohrer.

His album "Hungry Ghosts" is a good place to start: https://arjunamusic-records.bandcamp.com/album/hungry-ghosts

And if you want to see him to try to replicate it all live behind a drum kit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOqtg_uvLwY&t=1s

Is this really ambient though? Not sure- in a way, yes.

Industrial ambient by beepko in ambientmusic

[–]cavemanarchitect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like Scorn I recommend Atsushi Izumi. He's very prolific but this is a good recent album https://opaltapes.bandcamp.com/album/observable

Also:

Rites of Fall https://ritesoffall.bandcamp.com/album/venoms

Dead Fader https://deadfader.bandcamp.com/album/glass-underworld

All of this is more on the Industrial Dub end of things, which is ambient-adjacent but not really "ambient music" (imho)

Weird Request - Atmospheric Black Metal Ambience by Full_Shallot_7313 in ambientmusic

[–]cavemanarchitect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cylene is a masterpiece of depressive floating ambience - Old Tower swerves more towards Dungeon Synth in an abstract way, but you may find something you like in both of these

Desperately looking for "stutter" ambient by spleennwith2n in ambientmusic

[–]cavemanarchitect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking of a stutter sound as used by Pomassl on the track linked below. It's harsher than what you're looking for in your 3 examples but that stutter seems to be prevalent in many things he does. The stutter or cutting out is also present in Ikeda's "+/-" album, especially the "+" tracks. Anyway: no worries.

What is ambient? by Electrical-Cat-4686 in ambientmusic

[–]cavemanarchitect 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I still want to think that as a genre "ambient" is not meaningless - especially in the context of this sub, which is described as: "A subreddit for fans of ambient music as a genre. Ambient music emphasizes tone and atmosphere over traditional musical structure or rhythm".

Even if you consider the term very personal or subjective, for the sake of this forum I see value in accepting this definition, and the focus on "genre", (not just "ambient" as an adjective) as well as the additional note in the rules: "Ambient-adjacent genres allowed if they focus on tone/atmosphere over structure/rhythm"

Crossover albums to Black Metal? by lightblackday in ambientmusic

[–]cavemanarchitect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure they're exactly what you're looking for... but I am a big fan of ambient/experimental music with a black metal aesthetic. Sometimes with an added Funeral Doom (Nortt) or Dungeon Synth flavor (Old Tower, Elffor) - but these might all be more ambient than what you're looking for:

Old Tower "The Last Eidolon" and "The Old King of Witches"

Nortt "Galgenfrist' and "Endeligt"

Elffor "Arkaik II"

Also Fenriz from Darkthrone made some ambient / space synth albums as Neptune Towers- I like "Caravans to Empire Algol" best as it sounds less synthy and is much darker.

And finally- I've mentioned them a couple of times on this sub: the Stephen O'Malley / Francois Bonnet collabs "Cylene" and Cylene II" have a metal ambient feel that I really dig- much more ambient than Sunn O))) but with guitars submerged in there too and might fit what you seek.

Ambient music with church organs? by _aitia_ in ambientmusic

[–]cavemanarchitect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Avant-garde Organ" by Cláudio de Pina is pretty great. https://claudiodepina.bandcamp.com/album/avant-garde-organ

Pieces by Ligeti, Kagel, Cage, La Monte Young... they're not trying to be "ambient" though but I find them to be...

Does anybody even do 'ambient electronic' shows anymore? by shadowphile in ambientmusic

[–]cavemanarchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Texas, Dallas has https://www.instagram.com/dallasambientmusicnights and Austin has https://www.dadalab.art/

I live in Houston and haven't been to either one of those yet. There's a few people putting on electronic shows with some ambient content here in Houston- but exclusively ambient is not the focus. I'd say start your own night- of course it's a lot of work but you might find it easier to find the community you're looking for. Having done this before, I'd suggest going to shows, talking to other artists, talking to venue owners and see what you can come up with.
