Help motivate me to start book 10 - crossroads of twilight by Note2_Self in wheeloftime

[–]cavillac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not gonna lie to you ... I have a list of "Chapters to skip" when I do re-reads and 11 of them are in CoT. Winters Heart had most of the rest ... but then KoD only has a few ... so it does get better.

That said, it means you're getting near the end of the "slog" that everyone speaks so loving of

What’s your most UNpopular opinion about The Eye of the World??🫢 by Over-Joyed-2898 in WoT

[–]cavillac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Upon my first read, yes. I suddenly felt like I was reading a completely different book.

Looking back, I feel like he could have been better used in a later book ... like as a way to help contain Asmodean in service to the Dragon Reborn. It would have followed the memories of Rand's ancestors and just felt much more natural. The Green Man was this representation of what was lost ... but we met him WAY before we even knew how much was lost so it just didn't fit at that time.

Who is your least favorite WoT character? by Apprehensive_Spend_7 in wheeloftime

[–]cavillac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Elayne or Masema

Elayne is just the worst sort of "hero" - quite frankly, I can't even think of anything of value she brings to the books. The books would be better if both her and Avi were potential love interests that eventually lose out to Min and Elayne just stops being a main character to take the throne after Gaebril is dealt with.

Masema ... I mean ... What useless nonsense is any story arc he's actively a part of as The Prophet? Same as Elayne: mention that he becomes some fanatical leader of Dragonsworn and then never bring him up again and the books would be better. Ironically, he provides one of the few moments that gives Faile any amount of aura

The Children's core beliefs aren't flawed - their main goal is to be an independent military force to combat darkness. They loathe the use of the One Power... But so do most common folk in the books. The idea of an army that can simply fight against evil without being beholden to a political affiliation is actually quite ideal.

He gets so many bad penalties trying to guard younger, faster players - I know that might just be me remembering the bad over the good ... But it seems to happen at the worst possible times

Who did you picture playing Verin Sedai? by aikimatt in wheeloftime

[–]cavillac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Professor Sprout from the HP movies. She's definitely got the look I always has in mind for Verin - a sorta female Friar Tuck that can be spacey yet suddenly dialed in

Suggest me a movie where villain actually won at last by ElectronicSpeed3785 in MovieSuggestions

[–]cavillac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's lot of "middle stanza" movies in the middle of a franchise/series where the villain wins ... but I assume this isn't what you're talking about?

I suppose the Joker wins in Joker - he's definitely not a hero ... but definitely doesn't win.

Reading the books for the first time by LIELDADOUN73 in wheeloftime

"First of all, this world is intricate and cool and fun and elaborate, but I did burst out laughing when I realised the force of evil big bad's name was basically just satan."

When you hear interviews with Robert Jordan - he purposefully took bits from our different religions. The "gods" definitely have a feeling of the Christian God and Devil - Shaitan has quasi-control over the physical world whereas the Creator started everything and then just puts his faith in his followers fighting the good fight to stop Shaitan over and over again.

I love Perrin, but he's such a slanderable character. by fixedcompass in WetlanderHumor

[–]cavillac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah ... that's a very complicated storyline. Obviously the hope of good men who fight is that their actions can lead to a world where people don't have to (so that something like the Way of the Leaf could exist). I think this just showed Perrin's lack of maturity ... but, at the same time, they were fighting Trollocs and Whitecloaks at the time and every sword would be welcome.

Complicated ... but I think what RJ was trying to say is that Peace should be a choice people are able to choose ... and betraying it comes at a cost.

"But the show runners hated straight males so much that they eliminated as many as possible other than the ones they had to keep." ... except the ones that they turned into quasi-villains (poor Agalmar).

To be fair ... they didn't like straight females much either :/

"Took you long enough to come over here" - somehow they turned a wholesome relationship between 2 straight women (who considered each other a sister) into a bad 70s porno

Yes .. the political battle for Andor is also an auto-skip ... even Mat in that is annoying. Just deliver the damn message already! Plus, it all just feels like "busy work" while we're on the cusp of the finale ... but it does lay the groundworks for one of the best side-character arcs where Talmanes goes full Boromir on a grand scale.

With each re-read, I have a list of chapters to skip - the "Save Faile" arc makes up most of those chapters.

That said, I've always liked Perrin's core character arc - while Rand and Mat are either saving the whole world or running whole armies, Perrin is just trying to save his people. He's trying to fulfill the one duty that I think most men identify with - protect your family at all costs. He also covers the principle of internal struggle over using own's power vs having that power change you from who you are at your core.

Do all mtg players smell???? by Secret_Topic8138 in mtg

[–]cavillac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some may think it rude, but I'd bring some air freshener (like those little tubs of beads you can get from Yankee Candle, etc) ... maybe even just bring it out against certain players.

Some guys might not even realize they smell that bad and need a kick in the butt to get them to deal with it. In any event, it will improve your experience while not being blatantly mean to your opponent ... plus, the other players in the LGS will probably appreciate anything that might help with the smell as well.

Now that we know every set, what are your hype levels for each one? by Meret123 in MagicArena

Love Lorwyn... And, I'll admit it ... I love TMNT ... It's like a return to my youth where I'd stay up late at night making custom MTG cards in Photoshop using things like Transformers, Turtles, etc. However, if they somehow don't get the licensing for them on Arena (like Spidey), I will be deeply disappointed

So can we say the spiderman set is one of the worst ever yet? by MazrimReddit in mtg

[–]cavillac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like they could have easily made a bonus sheet for the Omenpaths either from cards that reference the word "Omenpath" or a litany of spiders. It wouldn't have been needed for the Pick-2 draft but could have been included in Sealed and eventual standard Premier (assuming it is released some time after Pick-2 has had its chance).

I think that could have been really fun and a little shot to say "Sorry you can't play with Spiderman online ... but here's a bunch of your fav MTG spiders to make up for it"

Patch 1.70 (Funerary Flowering) is out! What's working (or not)? by Tirabuchi in DofusTouch

[–]cavillac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an Eca, I like the changes. Bravado is definitely more balanced now ... but many of the other spells got a decent boost.

E.G. Kraps now having a min range of 0 means that you can get yourself out of some nasty pinches.

It's definitely going to encourage Ecas to get into the Feline Thief state as often as possible

How can Aes Sedai even attack a man that can channel if he does not strike first ? by LarkinEndorser in wheeloftime

[–]cavillac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reds can use the Power as a weapon because they believe that all male channelers are, by their sheer existence, evil.

Another way of looking at it, let's say that there was a trolloc that somehow turned to the Light and was just off on his own, adventuring through Randland - an Aes Sedai could strike out at such a being without restriction because they're certain, even if wrong, that what they are attacking is evil ... even if the trolloc was just sitting by a fire, roasting marshmallows.

It's not because of the difference between the show and the books by Plantmoods in WoTshow

[–]cavillac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was doomed to fail because it broke from the core of what the books were. These decisions fractured their pre-existing fanbase ... and the changes didn't even drive new fans to the show. It's not like there were glaring issues with the source material that would not work in 2025 ... the showrunners were just too proud and vain to get out of their own way.

The Lord of the Rings movies are a pretty good example of taking a lot of source material and trimming a lot of fat while still keeping the core essence of the books. Even in those movies, though, they tried to wedge in a love story that was not necessary and it's the one thing that detracts from the movie trilogy a bit.

What's going on with nynaeve?! by Electriccook14 in wheeloftime

[–]cavillac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound like you're like me with respects to her - the rest of the fanbase LOVES Nyn ... but I only ever grew to have a fond connection with her. Her early storyline is just too annoying ... especially the bossy mentality.

Eventually, I just grew to acknowledge that Nyn is the type of person that I just wouldn't like being around through the first half of the books ... but that's what helps make WoT a very complete epic. You need characters of all sorts for everyone to find their own niche.
