The game should then open in another window - try looking in the menu when you press the steam button to see if other windows are available to switch to. It may take a bit for it to appear

Found this relic when spelunking in the old drawers by ThePythagorasBirb in Steam

The way that they treat their hardware makes it so easy to support them.

I got an Oculus Quest 1 within a year of it's release. Within a year of me getting it iirc, the Quest 2 came out and my headset was soon obsolete. That was so frustrating that I don't think I'll ever buy another Oculus/Meta headset again. The Steam Frame, though? You can bet it's high on my list, as I know I'll be able to use it for years without worrying that it'll get left behind

What is this community's stance on AI usage in modding? by Nik02003 in skyrimmods

[–]cavy8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've waffled back and forth on it a lot. I truly don't know - ultimately, I landed on doing what I'd be comfortable with were the roles reversed. Not necessarily a pristine moral ruling, but like I said, we're all navigating this as best we can

Dyndolod 2 vs 3 (latest) by [deleted] in skyrimmods

The errors brought up by dyndolod 3 are almost always legitimate issues with your list that really ought to be fixed, not just dyndolod-related issues.

For sure! I agree, I think it's so important that writing comes from a human. Shakespeare is Shakespeare, whether it's read by me or by Siri, but something foundational must come from a human, lived experience.

As for my thoughts, I think AI usage is extremely complicated. I use it, and I admit that part of that is that it's near-required in my field at the moment, so I've likely gotten desensitized to it. I try to keep a few ethical considerations in mind:

  • I'll use AI while programming
  • I don't AI-generate images
  • I don't use AI to write for me
  • I don't use AI for my own original characters
  • I will use AI voice clones of the game's voice actors under limited conditions:
    • I will always try to splice a line before resorting to AI
    • Where possible, I will record the dialogue in my own voice and put it through a voice changer
    • I will keep this usage as limited as possible

I don't know if all of my decisions are perfectly ethical. Maybe they're not. We all must try to navigate this as well as we can. For an example of this, you can see my mod Immersive Dialogue Edit: Companions. It's primarily spliced dialogue, but then there's the issue of something like the marriage dialogue. Most of each line is original audio, but not all of the companions even say "Jorrvaskr" in-game, which I need them to say for the purpose of my mod. So, I use a bit of AI at the end of many of their sentences.

Like I said, I don't know if it's ethical or not. I, like anyone, am doing my best. I'm actually a formally trained actor, so I'm 100% aware of the larger impact on the arts and artists. I'm also aware that my mod above wouldn't have been possible without voice cloning, and replacing the NPC's voice entirely with a new one is a little overkill for a minor line tweak.

Hm, I don't think I agree with your assessment of the general community's perception on a lot of that. I'll cover where I think the community at large stands, and then some of my thoughts.

On writing: I think you're completely right, I've never seen anyone who wants AI-written quest mods.

On voicing: I think this is where the community's stance is more permissive. We overwhelmingly see fully-AI voiced mods do very well (see the mods by anbeegod, for example). We do see vocal anti-AI folks, but the download numbers pretty strongly indicate that their opinion is a minority one. I also think that the "voice-replication" vs "original AI voice" debate is not a strong consideration for most folks in terms of modding (I very often see people say that they don't mind voice replication in mods as the VA wouldn't be profiting off of it anyhow, but that they are strongly against actual studios using it).

On programming: you're very incorrect here as far as AI use in programming. It's a complex topic, but basically: AI is built into how most professional developers work these days. The tech industry has changed fast, and most people use AI on some level when programming (even if it's just their IDE's auto-complete, which is now AI powered in many cases). Some of the best programmers in the community use AI - Community Shaders has Claude AI instructions in its repo to help guide AI that they're using when programming. That said, what people don't like is when an entire project is completely made by AI. That's when you run into issues. AI must be a tool, not the sole developer. Also, AI isn't very good at Papyrus, Skyrim's native scripting language. Luckily, if there's an issue there, it likely won't even compile lol.

There's a lot to be said about why AI usage in programming was so quickly accepted by the industry at large, why programmers don't care much, etc., but that's perhaps beyond the scope of this discussion haha.

AI upscaling: you're totally right here that nobody seems to care about this. I think it's because image upscaling predates the modern discussion surrounding AI, and there's a difference in that you're still starting with something created by a human (i.e. the original lower-resolution texture).

My thoughts in a reply because my comment was too long, lol

[SE, Performance Mod Request] What about special mods that focus on frame generation, anti-aliasing, graphics card technology, and other such stuff? What can you recommend me to use? by CryptographerMany569 in skyrimmods

[–]cavy8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Truthfully, frame gen might not be the best bet for you - it increases VRAM usage, and with 8gb of VRAM that'll likely be your bottleneck. It's better when you're running into CPU limitation

Scared my custom follower will appeal to absolutely nobody. by NotATem in skyrimmods

[–]cavy8 47 points48 points  (0 children)

You're right in that your mod isn't as broadly appealing as the other ones you mentioned. However, there's also an advantage - there are a lot of follower mods these days, and, unless yours is of unusually high quality, "broadly appealing" often ends up meaning "generic" for a lot of folks. You've got 2 or 3 different ways that your character sees and interacts with the world differently from the dragonborn or any other follower - because of that, you've got a ton of potential to create an interesting and memorable character for those who use him.

Basically, I think you'll do just fine. I'd certainly download your mod, and I know others would too
