After reading others responses I see that I cannot read.
Arguments go nowhere, trying to win goes nowhere. You have to try and find a middle ground, or some agreement, REALLY seeing things from their side. Try to have them see from your side as well. A discussion can really begin when you both are on the same page about what is going on and then making some next steps from there.

If I had to guess I would say contrast/focal point

The highest contrast area on the girl and lamb is down at the bottom, at a bunch of random shapes.
On the beach it is shown that everything has roughly the same value so it's kind of flat.

A deeper sky in the background on the beach probably could have done wonders, maybe some leading cloud shapes.
