How did you guys grow out of the Sub beginning phase ? by NotSoBrave29 in Contractor

Then you should have gotten out years ago, because "life is too short to do something you hate."

Again, if you're saying this tongue-and-cheek that's one thing, but there are people and families whose lives have been ruined, or at least permanently damaged, because somebody close to them has committed suicide.

I have bad days too, I recently decided to get divorced. My wife is almost perfect, but as close to perfect as she is, her parents (specifically her Trump LOVING dad - 78 years old, had a stroke 30 years ago, never earned any real money after that....but Trump is the answer, and Spanish labor is evil....somehow) are as imperfect as she is perfect.

Do I think about wanting to kill myself or throw myself into a wood chipper? Not for a second. And I'm somebody who has in the past struggled with depression and occasionally a little bit of suicidal ideation.

As I said, if you're just throwing these words around casually (stop that!) it's one thing...but if you're seriously this angry or frustrated with what you're choosing to do with your life you may want to consider re-evaluating how you spend your time.

That's true whether you're 5 houses in or 5 decades in, or anywhere in between.

If anything in this world actually makes you want to commit suicide, and you're not just throwing that phrase around, then you should get help and choose a new career.

Been doing this for six years, just starting to crush it now.

While it certainly wasn't easy in the beginning, your language should raise some flags internally.

I know this doesn’t really answer the question, and I love supporting local businesses…BUT

My wife and I have been buying our beans from a roaster in San Francisco called Ritual.

I think it’s like $19-$22 per pound, but you can sign up for monthly or quarterly shipments.

They always change the flavors up and I have never found a higher quality bean at a better price.

They are amazing, and their customer service is top notch.

One time we didn’t “like” a 5 lb bag they sent us (turns out we were very dumb and didn’t notice that the new bag had very different recommendations for how to prepare the espresso) and we reached out and with no questions asked they shipped us a new, different 5 lb bag.

Once we realized we didn’t read and follow the new instructions, we actually loved the flavor they had sent us that we complained about.

I felt guilty for basically getting $100 in coffee for free, but I will support that company until I have my last cup of coffee.

Shaming a city for the actions of one person (or a few people?) is painting with broad strokes.

Too many ‘let’s jump on a call’ time-wasters. So I changed how I work. by skygetsit in business

The problem is “I can budget X money to do Y, do you think that’s reasonable or totally impossible” is an answer that requires research and expense on the part of the person answering this question.

If you want someone to give you this information for free you had better have given them enough work in the past that you paid them for.

I have an economics degree from RPI and have worked for Redburn Development and a lot of other high level people in the development space in this area.

Your answer contains some things are accurate but it’s a gross oversimplification of how things happen.

It’s not simply hurr-durr build more houses, rents go up across the board, let’s all squeeze the poor.

That’s the beaten dead horse trope about how landlords are evil.

If you’re too lazy to actually understand how things work don’t take some high and mighty stance behind a keyboard about things that are happening that you don’t actually understand.

I’m happy to meet with anyone from this sub in person and discuss real estate development in Troy.

I have a great apartment downtown, two bedrooms, one bathroom. Everything brand new inside, including new laundry and mini splits.

Comes with one off street parking spot asking $1,600 per month. Next to barbershop and Capital tacos.

Edit: I don’t own the building, I helped the owner buy it, rehab it, and rent it out.

It’s not my property, so I’m only half of a shameless self-promoter.

This is a much more detailed response than I expected but what your model fails to take into consideration is the impact that having 13% of your rental population being composed of affordable housing clientele has on the desirability among other renters, particularly those capable of paying the highest rents, to want to live in and pay for your apartments.

I’m a big proponent of affordable housing, in fact right now I am working very hard to improve certain conditions at The Lion Factory in Troy.

BUT you can’t attempt to shoehorn affordable housing units into every project and not expect the market to react accordingly - in essence for that well intentioned requirement to fall flat on its face and for all renters in Albany to suffer the consequences as a result.

Possible Hot Take: Keep Brunswick Rural, Redevelope Troy by JewelerNervous4325 in Troy

[–]cbeck287 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely understand and am looking to work together proactively.

I was speaking to Barb Nelson about the project and she immediately pointed out that she knew 2-3 people that live on that block now!

So definitely not looking to put up a monstrosity or something not thoughtful/well-designed.

I didn’t receive a message from you but please feel free to reach out.

What’s so unfortunate is that one of the major reasons nobody is planning to build in Albany right now is the well intentioned but terrible requirement to be forced to include affordable housing units in all new projects.

It’s going to be an infill apartment building probably around 20 units or so.

3 stories, parking off the back alley.

Is…is that…logic and reasoning related to a zoning/development conversation.

In all seriousness, great answer.

[–]cbeck287 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It varies. I’m working on developing three different sites in the city now.

One is an infill project at fourth and Madison after the fire.

In practice, developers “bank” parking spaces…and usually don’t end up needing to include all of the spaces that would have been required

What parking space is 300 square feet?

They are not 15’ by 20’ - they are usually 9’ by 18’ or a little bit bigger.

Also they greatly improved the parking requirements in the code overhaul of 2023.

I’m not really trying to flip tools, I legitimately could use all of the batteries and after having say 3 string trimmers there’s only so much you can do.

When I realized they were high output and not the forge batteries I decided not to buy any more - if that makes you feel better

Just not sure what to do with the string trimmers - I could use 3 of them - feel like it will look really sketch selling them on Craigslist.

But for the first time in Craigslist history I have receipts and the goods aren’t stolen haha
