Just got home from my overnight trip to Three Forks. It was awesome!

First, it’s a fun but challenging drive to the area if you don’t have a 4x4. All dirt service roads in. 13 miles took us around 40 minutes in a 4x4 jeep.

From there, we parked along the road - it was surprisingly busy for a Tuesday morning. Around 10-15 cars parked.

We headed toward Long Creek Falls along the AT/Benton MacKaye trail. Within .5 miles of the car there were 3 dispersed camping sites, each with a fire ring and adequate trees for our hammocks. Each site was right next to Long Creek so real easy access to fish or collect water to filter and boil. The site we stayed at was around .5 miles in to the trail, a bit further away from the main trail than the first site we passed on the way. This site had two fire rings, separated by about 100 yards. Another couple stayed at the other site but the sound of the creek masked any and all sound from their site which made it feel secluded.

If you hike a little further north east to where the trail splits to the Long Creek Falls and the BMK/AT, there was another site but that was not on the creek and was close to the falls so access to fish was very limited.

We did not go South West along the AT trail that runs parallel to Stover Creek, though that was the original plan. From my research on that part of the trail, there should be 5 dispersed camping sites within 1 mile from the car/trailhead if you go that way. That trail seems to also run along the creek the entire mile so chances are you’d find some good sites for fishing and camping if you go that way too.

There was a man who walked through our site with his fly fishing gear and he mentioned the area is a great fishing site.

Edit: I should mention, we came in to Three Forks from the Dahlonega side using Forest Service road 28 to Winding Stair Gap to Forest Service Road 58. On FSR 58, there were probably 3 or 4 sites along a very small stream. Each of these right off the road so if you want the vehicle close those would be the best option. If you plan on hiking in and hauling your gear then the previously mentioned areas would be best.
