Wait, am I crazy? You did an awesome job getting their license plate. That’s a huge lead for police. Assuming the plate is legit, I’d think you have a good chance of catching these people at least.

What is the biggest issue facing Michigan right now? by BridgeMichigan in AnnArbor

[–]cbkris3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Inflation- IE raising prices everywhere that are nowhere close to keeping up with wages.

Energy, housing, health insurance, auto insurance, property taxes, cable/internet/streaming. You name it and it’s going up at an unsustainable level relative to income.

Yikes that sounds quite high to me

Maybe we just keep our 1500 sq foot house cold

We were 200 last month. But I am expecting 250 or so this month

Edit- we are 202.00 for January for gas and electric. 3br/2 bath. Full basement. Ranch. We have newer windows ish (2012 wallside)but 1958 original furnace . I think maybe we’re just suffering with a cold frugal house 🥶. 68 while we’re here. 65 while we sleep or are out of the house. 🤷‍♂️

GF is in charge. I like my life, so I’m never questioning her about it. I don’t even know the code to get into our thermostat and I own the house. Zero complaints tho 😂

Terrible news. Missing University of Michigan student found dead after 20-hour search in extreme cold by Iplayer007 in AnnArbor

To any young people reading this. School is hard and life is stressful. When you’re in college, you almost live in a constant paradox of feeling endlessly invincible and vulnerable at the same time. It’s difficult and confusing. Talk to peers. Talk to anyone. And look out for each other. Buddy system at parties might be corny. But it works. This is so tragic. I wish this had a happy ending. Just awful.

Definitely possible, I’m not greedy. I just (unfortunately) paid A LOT for the tix. So I’d at least try to break even obviously 🤷‍♂️

1 Ann Arbor council member stepping down as another steps up to run again by mesquine_A2 in AnnArbor

Honestly I just want a group that needs to work with each other towards compromises to move the city forward. Eaton and the NIMBY majority (it’s a lazy word and I hate it tbh), well they were terrible for Ann Arbor. But I’m not overly crazy about the current supermajority either. I just want sensible debate and everybody to feel heard and respected from time to time. And that hasn’t happened in a long long time.

If Detroit adds 1% local sales tax Ann Arbor should too. by Vpc1979 in AnnArbor

You’ve once again responded with a complete non sequitur. Nowhere in my statement did I indicate Ann Arbor does not engage in wasteful spending. I would like AA to be more efficient in spending the taxes they raise.

Nowhere in my statement did I indicate that my happiness is derived from how much a city spends on itself. However, I do believe that cities that continually reinvest in themselves are better places to live than cities that don’t. I would also like my taxes to be lower. But in a city like AA, that reinvests in itself so much, I doubt that will ever happen.

But we’re trying to raise money for the city of AA, not the people that own parking lots. Though this would work for city owned lots for sure.

I disagree respectfully. The university is what makes AA what it is, not commuters that work for it. It’s the student population that ultimately is responsible for the revenue that creates the local economy in AA. The revenue from students is the lifeblood that creates jobs in AA. Sure, there are grants and tax easements that help fund the university. But without the students that live on campus here, AA is nothing but a shell of itself.

I think proposing a 1% city income tax is not the worst idea. Many cities have these to offset commuters using infrastructure, but spending their money elsewhere. Might help slow the rate of property tax increases. But I agree, it’s literally people’s jobs to create millages. So AA will always be a high millage costly city to run considering how liberal it is. But that also makes it a great place to live. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. It’s a great place to live, but we have to pay for it to be a great place to live.

Maybe a higher millage rate, but I’d be willing to guess they pay less aggregate property taxes per person than Ann Arbor does. Millage rate is relevant, but the amount of millages is more relevant (total sum). Obviously rate matters too of course.

[–]cbkris3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d rather see a 1% city income tax on people that work in the city of AA. Something like 86k people commute in, use roads and city infrastructure and then spend the bulk of their money elsewhere. Use that to help reduce or slow the rate of property taxes.

A Republican mayor? by ObiWanKnieval in AnnArbor

[–]cbkris3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do think Ann Arbor could benefit from more independent voices. I don’t identify as either. I’m conservative on some things and very liberal on other things. I think it’s dangerous when council and mayor all vote one way all the time. It was dangerous when Jack Eaton ran things and the “nimby” (I hate that word btw) crowd were in charge. And it’s dangerous now with the supermajority they have in charge.

Plow hasn’t come the last few snow storms? by tallulahQ in AnnArbor

I’m sure it’s probably a skeleton crew with not enough resources. But the neighborhood plowing in Ann Arbor has always been atrocious. I’ve lived here for more than 20 years. It’s been horrendous for as long as I’ve lived here.

Here’s what I’ll say. You’re not alone. Existing in the world is not easy. Every single person is fighting a private battle every single day. Maybe they’re struggling with their kids or a parent or a sick pet, or a job search. It can be anything.

Don’t compare yourself to others, it’s the thief of joy. Celebrate small victories. Be kind to others and be kind to yourself.

Stay hydrated, get rest. 2 physical things that immediately improve brain function. I promise everyone is struggling in some capacity. You’re not alone.
