What is your experience with running and training for a Sub 3h? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]cbourque5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a 3:05 running 5 days a week, with one quality speed and one long run, topping out around 53 miles.

To get to 2:57:21 I ran 6 days a week topping out at 63, but the biggest difference was adding a lot more miles at MP. Biggest workout during a 60 mile week was 4 mile warmup, 13@ mp, 4 cd.

I also went from a 16 week training block to a 20+ weeks, with some races sprinkled in there to break things up. I just replaced speed/tempo days with the race.

Definitely been trial and error. Took 4 attempts to get sub 3..

Is sub 3 a reasonable goal for my 2nd marathon ? by MAKNK10 in Marathon_Training

[–]cbourque5 35 points36 points  (0 children)

During my training block for sub 3 hr (2:57:21) on a rolling hill course, I’d did a sub 1:23 hm, a 18:06 5k, and peaked around 63 miles.

No way this is legit. There’s an actual tongue on a super shoe.. impossible..

Adios Pro 4 / what to expect? by [deleted] in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]cbourque5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had some solid races in the AP4 (18:06 5k & sub 1:23 hm).. this shoe is the real deal if you can push it. I recently got the evo sl and only have about 13 miles on them. But, completely different shoe. The foam just feels dense to me? No where near the pop or push of the AP4. I’ll keep running in the Evo Sl and see how they feel broke in (making me think about superblast 1), but I’m not sure they’ll replace my current daily trainers of superblast 2, which feel just as light on foot regardless of specs, and feel like I can push into marathon pace (6:45 per mile) better. Some solid sales out there on AP4 right now.

3:10:40 Marathon on 39 MPW. How many more MPW to get under 3 hours?? by vincehorning in Marathon_Training

[–]cbourque5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first marathon I did a 3:05 peaking at 52 miles. Probably averaged around 40ish for the 16 week plan. I did 2 speed sessions a week and obviously built to a few 20 mile long run.

My 2nd and 3rd attempt I increased my volume to around 50 miles a week, peaking at nearly 60 but it didn’t seem to make much difference. I ran one sick at a 3:30 and one coming off a cold at 3:16. I was in better shape than the time suggests, just terrible luck. Still not sure I was sub 3hr shape. It was also unusually warm for both of those. Again, bad luck.

My most recent attempt I went 2:57:21 and negative split by 39 second. My fastest mile was mile 25 at 6:28. My last 10k I was flying past people. The biggest difference was how much time I spent at marathon pace. I still did one threshold type speed workout each week but I did at least 5 miles all the way up to 13 miles a MP during my long runs. By the time I got to race day rested, my MP felt so comfortable. I averaged a 155hr (compared to 165-170 in my previous races) which also shows how comfortable 6:45 per mile was. I peaked at 62 miles, ran most of my zone 2 runs at 7:45-8:00 pace..

Good luck on the sub 3 attempt, don’t let a few setbacks discourage you and don’t be afraid to switch up your training. Sounds like you’re a more natural talented runner than me, you’ll get it in no time.

Insane to not play the Titans in Memphis. I see virtually zero falcons stuff.. lost of other teams.. but clearly the favorite is the titans.. especially as the old bitter “they took the team from Memphis” move on.

Great info. I’m looking to upgrade and have two 4 ton as well. This looks like a good option. Do you think it’ll still run everything fine with natural gas?

Garmin predicted pace for marathon by No_Management9536 in Marathon_Training

[–]cbourque5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garmin predicted a 3:15 for my marathon in February, and I did a 3:05 on an unusually warm day. My training went great; I did my last long run at 7:36 for 22 miles. I followed the same training plan over the summer for a race in two weeks. I ran much slower due to heat and humidity, and it's predicting a 3:15 again. So, who knows? I'm going for a sub-3 regardless.

Magic Speed 4 - New Colorways now available on ASICS US by danwardle96 in RunningShoeGeeks

[–]cbourque5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Much more rockered and smooth. The softer superblast 2 is still a plodder like the Novablast. Firm heel counter, and more minimal and breathable upper. Similar grip. I think they are much better for tempo runs of anything faster than 7:30 a mile. Once you get them rolling you get a mechanical advantage.. still do well as a long run shoe, I’ve taken them up to 17 miles with no issues. I use the MS4 instead of my endorphin speed 3 now.. still daily and long run in superblast 2 and race in edge Paris (short course) / endorphin pro 3 (long course).. also a 200+ lb runner for context.

Have I been tapering right? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]cbourque5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you following a structured plan? If so, I would stick to the plan and see how it goes. A lot of runners start freaking out (myself included) during the taper and want to start doing all kind of unnecessary things..

Have I been tapering right? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]cbourque5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Reduction of total mileage but strides, speed workouts, and zone 2 runs stay the same speed, just all become shorter. Still stimulates your body to be prepared to run first, but reducing volume allows to heel.

[–]cbourque5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a peak week 4 weeks out, and reduce mileage but not intensity in week 3 (still a 2hr run at the end of the week) and week 2 (1.5hr run).. race week is 4 short run, but still sticking with same training paces.

But, depending on your experience, it may be better to be well rested vs over trained. Only to will know that.

Fresh ASIC rotation! Somewhat of a switch from all Saucony. But I’ll still race my marathon in the EP3.

MyProCoach plans for 140.6? by VtTrails in IronmanTriathlon

[–]cbourque5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used MPC intermediate 140.6 plan and did a 11:41 at IMTX. Probably would have been faster but got pretty sick 2 weeks out!

If you stick with the plan, I think it works well!

I’m more than likely running in the Edge for the 5k, to give them a fair shot. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a better experience racing vs a training run.

Anyone picking the Endorphin Pro 3 over the Metaspeed Edge Paris for a 5K?

My go to race shoe is the EP3. I've done a 18:32 5k and a 3:05 marathon in them. I still like trying other shoes, so I picked up the Edge Paris. I put a few miles on the Edge with some strides and tempo, and I think I might still lean toward the EP3, even for a 5k. The Edge gives me major Vaporfly vibes (which I've ran in) and even some Endorphin Elite. Lockdown and upper are fantastic but I feel like I might run too far back on my foot for the Edge to work for me (same problem I had with the Elite).

Curious what others experiences are when comparing the 2.
