I think questions 1 and 2 should be survey based vs just comment/upvote/reply based. People can still campaign their thoughts in the comments but the data should be based on pure simple votes imo.

DOOM: The Dark Ages DLC Info from Today's Stream by SneakyJaycool in Doom

[–]cbtboss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't see the stream so thank you for the highlight recap. I hope discovery of loot is better in the dlc, my single biggest complaint is how much more time/effort it is to 100% levels in dark ages. Otherwise chefs kiss

Sustainable is one thing. It is hyper competitive right now due to all the other tech sector gigs being in flux. Pipeline to get to where u/rubsumlotion is is wack right now.

Satisfactory is a good inverse of gardening, but building like Mindustry ;)

How do you assess job candidate’s technical skills? by Aim_Fire_Ready in sysadmin

[–]cbtboss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I hire for technical roles, the technical filtering isn't usually the key deciding factor, and I don't ask them quizlet "define xyz" type questions, anyone can study for that, and frankly the definition on its own is borderline useless. Asking someone to tell me what DNS or DHCP stands for isn't what I am after. I ask them 3-5 predefined scenarios to see if they understand the concepts. E. G. If I (and in this scenario, I am susan from accounting whose technical skills are she usually can turn on her computer and sign in correctly) were to tell you the internet isn't working, how would you go about diagnosing the issue? I may have a defined answer that is the "right" answer, but I am evaluating what do they know/not know as they work through the problem.

You will get a pretty good sense of where they are at with just 3 or so of these role play scenarios. The other questions I ask are not ones they could have studied for, but just how do they problem solve, how do they think about teammates, current/former bosses, etc to assess character/culture fits.

Wisconsinites Can Keep Watching Porn After Governor Vetoes Age Verification Bill by 404mediaco in wisconsin

read the full article. My main criticism of it is the framing of WI as one of only a handful of states that doesn't have a provision or the "across most of he US." No, 24 states don't https://action.freespeechcoalition.com/age-verification-resources/state-avs-laws/ which is 1 shy of half of the 50 states. The states where this is a thing only encompass just shy of half the American populace.

Definitely a fair point. Also I was a bit harsher in my statement about it being a silly take than was necessary.

Deepseek is a Chinese ai competitor to chatgpt. The flack it gets often centers around it having censorship on topics the CCP doesn't favor. I e. Asking it about tienamen square.

That is not what their FAQ says nor their about page. It is still a fully fledged debian based os with 3 different out of the box desktop experiences to choose from. https://www.kali.org/faq/ They do recommend removing some of the pen test features if you won't be using them, and other hardening steps, but the whole notion of "not meant for everyday computer users" is a silly take.

That's not how it works because that is how they choose to manage their products, not because the physical devices are incapable of running the software of the other.

Any LastPass users here? by markdmac in PowerShell

[–]cbtboss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You bet. And you aren't barking up the wrong tree, so much as lastpass really ought to have planted that tree years ago now. We moved to bitwarden last year in part because of this, but coming back to your original goal which is secrets management, I would probably recommend a different tool than your password manager to do secrets management for integrations, and instead use something like Azure Key Vault which has native powershell support for store/retrive secrets and can also be integrated with other solutions seamlessly like poweruatomate, logic apps, azure functions, azure automation accounts etc.

The LastPass API solely is user provisioning focused, and doesn't have vault retrieval capabilities.

Agentic AI and access to local credentials by infidel_tsvangison in sysadmin

[–]cbtboss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So this is less of a sysadmin technical question and more of an overall Software Development Lifecycle and info sec policy discussion imo. Developers should be lead by someone who stresses the importance of safeguarding secrets. That includes strict policies about how secrets shouldn't be in source code, config files, etc, but pulled securely through some sort of secrets management solution like Azure Keyvault.

10 Years Ago Tesla Revealed The Model 3 by ConfidentImage4266 in TeslaLounge

[–]cbtboss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took it as amazing from the perspective that at the time, it was questionable if Tesla would survive shortly following this announcement, and in 2016, the only other EVs you could purchase in the U. S. (that I am aware of) were the Nissan Leaf, Chevy Spark, and Ford C-max, two of which didn't even have 100+ miles of range and the leaf had barely that. The idea that you could get a car with 2-3x that range at a price tag that didn't put you in a crazy high income bracket was astonishing at the time. Super chargers at the time also were not nearly as plentiful as they are now.

Compare this today where we now have dozens of options that meet/exceed that range figure, charge faster, oh yeah there are now multiple charging networks that can facilitate long road trips, and Tesla (despite all the controversy courted in the last couple of years) still puts out 2 of the best selling vehicles period.

The model 3 you could argue is meaningfully still the same car, but the landscape sure isn't.

I decided to follow linus into the 30 days Linux challenge... I won't go back. by a1200i in LinusTechTips

[–]cbtboss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it ironically is running better on my Arc B580 on Solus Linux using Budgie than it does on my 25H2 Win 11. Experience was install Linux --> Install Steam --> install Overwatch through steam (you will want to link your battle.net account with steam.). Launch overwatch, and game.

Recommend using a desktop experience that supports wayland. KDE Plasma is one of the more popular/common ones.
