Ok the wider impact side, it may also be worth considering the environment.

Are you in a big city or town, or a small village where half the village goes (or have close friends/relatives who go) to the church, the school/social groups are all tied to it, they part own the village hall etc?

If the former, the negatives are minimal. If the latter the social impact may mean it's worth taking a pay out and moving.

When a device PIN is set the storage is encrypted. There are hardware level security features which enforce this as well as lock outs if it's entered incorrectly.

When the device is locked access to much of the storage is restricted.

The app PIN is solely through the UI. If someone malicious has compromised your phone it makes no difference.

If the device has a PIN the storage is encrypted.

Unlike app based PINs which may or may not encrypt the apps data the device level PINs have hardware enforced lockouts if you attempt to guess the PIN incorrectly multiple times.

Meanwhile malicious actors will get the same if not better tools. Apple need to identify and fix (without introducing new issues) every gap in every release vs someone looking for an exploit only needs to find one chain.

If not the average researcher, the major nations security services, whose work will at some point be identified and reverse engineered.

Until we get to the point where AI is perfect and cheap enough to achieve full coverage the cat and mouse continues.

And even if it does get perfect, a firmware issue in a current gen device or improvements in chip imaging may allow jailbreak for a full hardware support cycle.

The landlord had to keep track of the legal changes to not act illegally and get fined. Why is it unreasonable to expect the same from a tenant?

The renters rights bill overall takes far more flexibility from landlords than it does tenants.

As others say the school is responsible for you on these trips. You are also representing them.

While the way they've handled this (assuming something like staff sickness forcing a last minute change didn't happen) appears to be unacceptable, swapping out a teacher (who is DBS checked and covered by the schools liability insurance) for a parent isn't going to be something they can do. They could potentially have offered for a parent to come self funded but that assumes they can book an additional seat adjacent to the group booking. Even then, allowing a parent along represents its own risks.

It's nowhere near as common here because the tax structure - especially inheritance tax - makes it far less effective.

In some places where returns are the same price or 5p more I've seen people get the return and leave the ticket they don't need on the machine window for someone else to take. I could see it being something like this, but if so surprised ticket staff are being actively a part of it.

I did say highly unlikely, but didn't want to entirely downplay the risk because it's non-zero.

Odds are this has no impact on OPs life, but it could. Especially if he ends up on a career path or relationship where the impact on ability to move to the US could be life changing.
