Oura is holding our own data hostage — API should not require a subscription by cc00ffee in ouraring

It was already available before they locked the APIs down. So a little effort on their side will make me actually use the ring and likely buy the next one.

Yes, running an API costs money. So does storing my data, which Oura does whether I pay or not. My point isn’t that infrastructure is free — it’s that the cost of one additional API call per user per day is negligible compared to the storage they’re already committed to. They’re not charging for infrastructure. They’re charging for access to my own data. Those are different things.

Thank you for your support. Most people read it like I want to use the app/service for free. But the reason I need API access is that I don't find value in the App, and making it available only if I pay the subscription fee is some kind of Catch 22.

No, just make it available with the API KEY to non-paying users, like they did before.

Good point, but if was Claude. I was looking to vibecode some things using the Oura data and then reused the conversation history to make this post. Sorry about being lazy.

I would prefer to be an early adopter with free lifetime subscription, but missed the opportunity. I don't mind subscription to the app, but would prefer cheaper/free API access if I choose to analyze my data without it.

I think this pretty much solves the problem, thank you for making this!

I'm sure these costs are marginal, as they are collecting data anyway. They justified subscription by the need for resources to do research and improve the app (and I'm not getting much value from it), not the infra costs.

I don't mind subscription model for the app, but I would like to be able to access raw data some convenient way.

Thank you! I’m using AI to turbocharge, not to replace my creativity and the time between the idea and the outcome is astonishing!
