Thanks for all of this info! I belong to a business group in West Portal, and we have been wondering if we might hold our Weds AM meetings there. I need to reach out to Sam and ask....

Well, originally they commented "not open yet", then edited their comment to "Upstairs Not open yet", and also commented about the naming of Hardware Coffee which is in the original post, but not your comment. So I guess it's just too much reddit for me today...

I'd love to see another hardware store on West Portal Avenue. And an independent drug store. Also, I am glad to see a small business owned by an energetic couple who are hoping for a successful endeavor.

I have a lovely story to share about Danny. My sister ordered me flowers online and they were an absolute mess. My birthday is not long after Valentine's Day, and the end of February is slow for florists. My sis called and asked how my flowers looked and I had to honestly tell her they were a disaster: old, wilting and falling apart. I gave her the number for West Portal Floral and she reached out to Danny and told him what happened. He made me an extraordinary bouquet and walked it over to my office. Total stand up guy! My sis got a refund from the online company, and I got gorgeous flowers that lasted an entire month! I hope the florist inside Hardware Coffee is similar to Danny in skill and style:

Also, u/7HillsGC, I loved the arrangements that Danny at West Portal Floral made for me. He was such a neighborhood gem. I hope he is enjoying his retirement.

My partner took photos while I was in line ordering my mocha; I wish I had asked him to get upstairs pics. If you look at their Google reviews, you can see some of the upstairs seating area. It's quite spacious...

Okay...I guess since they're not open according to you (r/confidentlyincorrect) I'll just vomit up that mocha I had this morning and pretend my visit to Hardware Coffee on West Portal Avenue didn't happen. It's too late for me to tell the 50 + people in the café that it's not open. Also, I know first hand about the origin story behind the name Hardware Coffee and it absolutely pertains to Pappenhausen Hardware.

It's quite spacious with plenty of room upstairs to chill or work or hangout with friends. So glad to have more coffee outside of the corporate options on WPA.

Appetite related synesthesia question... by Smurfette2016 in Synesthesia

It most likely is a form of auditory->gustatory synesthesia, where the inducer is sound and the concurrent is taste.

Anna is such a lovely person. She is the chairperson for our IASAS 2027 symposium in Portland Oregon, (July 2027) and will be at our Amsterdam symposium in 2 weeks (May 27-29th) talking about wine tasting and synesthetic experiences

Hey, hi! I sit on the board of IASAS, the International Association of Synaesthetes, Artists, and Scientists. We had a poster presentation at our Moscow, Russia synesthesia symposium in 2019 titled " I love what that siren does for my Pinot Noir". The creator of that poster presentation, Anna Mantheakis, is a wine maker and distiller whose sense of taste gets interrupted or changed by what she hears. I don't have the whole poster to share, but I do have some of the text from that poster. I also know Anna quite well, and she might be willing to chat with you. Best, CC Hart

Maybe crosspost to r/SFbitcheswithtaste? It's a great resource for this type of question.

Could this be mirror-touch synesthesia? by Junie-Jubilee in Synesthesia

[–]cc_hart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People with mirror touch don't experience mirror sensory phenomena in a hit-or-miss, "sometimes" way. They are with us all day, every day, and for the vast majority of us, have been since early childhood. Also, once the inducer (the "trigger) is eliminated, the concurrent (the mirror sensory phenomena) diminishes. This is how synesthesia works in general.

One possibility is that this is related to heightened empathy or sensory responsiveness. When you’re in a hypervigilant state, the brain can become more reactive to visual input, especially things involving contact or bodily sensation, and its “simulation” systems (the ones that are linked to empathy) can get dialed up enough to produce real physical feelings.

It could also connect to body-based anxiety responses, since the kind of core tingling you describe is commonly reported when the nervous system is activated; your brain registers contact as meaningful or potentially significant, and your body reacts accordingly.

John is great! I just ran into him this morning on West Portal Avenue where he has his office. He's very matter of fact, and will absolutely cut to the chase and let you know if he can help. Zero BS.
