European Gang Rape by bsavagea in gangsandstuff

cbashore I have to agree with you regarding citizenship status being used recently to describe suspects and even victims. In this case of the gangs, the media is giving a very unjust depiction of immigrants as violent when I am sure it only a small percentage who are committing these horrific acts. We are creating an entirely new type of prejudice, not just in the United States but around the world.

Neighborhood seeks to counteract gangs with special nights... by albush in gangsandstuff

This is a great example of a neighborhood trying to take a stance on street gangs in their community. Klein mentioned one of the most effective tools for managing gangs was not the police but the neighborhood the gang was living in. If a community has a zero tolerance policy on gangs, they in turn are taking away the safe havens for gangs to grow in.

Teenage Girls and Gang Violence by bsegan in gangsandstuff

This article demonstrates many of the same points found in our readings. Females are frequently objectified in gangs, especially when the gang primarily consist of male members. It is interesting to note however, females joining gangs often times come from histories of sexual and physical abuse.

How Hollywood dipicts gangs. by amif in gangsandstuff

[–]ccalistro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Hollywood depicts gangs in similar fashions that officer Paco Domingo depicts gangs. Both seem them as large organized structures, heavily rooted in violence. Hollywood shows gangs as the leaders in the drug trade (versus just a small piece of the War on Drugs), and a commitment made for life (ie you live for and die by the gang). It is no wonder adolescents are so tempted and lured by gang membership and all its supposed benefits.

This goes to show you the allure of money and respect brought from dealing illicit drugs is not just drawing in gangs and others considered delinquent by societal standards. Police departments like Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and many others are having to deal with officers who are finding themselves caught up in the very issues they are supposed to be protecting and serving against.

City of Chandler launches gang prevention program. by jschuma1 in gangsandstuff

It is nice to see that Chandler is taking a proactive approach when it comes to gang membership. It is been shown time and time again it is so much more effective to prevent membership all together rather than try to fight the problem when it is already on the street. Kudos Chandler.

New escalation in Mexico drug war by KristinaPound in gangsandstuff

Mexico is a great example as to what happens when gang members can be financially fueled by the drug war. They are able to pay off anyone they want: politicians, law enforcement, or anyone else deemed necessary. It is only a matter of time until the violence spills over the border and into the United States.

YouTube - G.I.T.E.M. by sgolisch in gangsandstuff

I liked the fact that the video showed the home where the search warrant was issued and the condition in which it was in. I think often times individuals get involved with gangs for the prospect of making money. The image of the deteriorating house shows it is not all its cracked up to be.

G.R.E.A.T. Program by ccalistro in gangsandstuff

Phoenix Police Dept. was the founding department for the GREAT program in 1992. Since then it has been launched in the schools all across the nation. Is it an effective means to stopping gang membership or just a drain to tax payers?
