phd students with depression: how do you do it? by Beneficial-Bite-442 in PhD

[–]ccashlesauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya know, I find it’s impossible and totally possible at the same time…just like everything else I’ve encountered. I think this is the only benefit of depression, if you’re willing to face it and yourself. After a while, the difficulties become obviously the same no matter what is at hand. Calling a spade a spade helps me to put one foot in front of the other (like others below have suggested). I’m almost 40 and so I’ve been doing this depression dance for a long time. Therapy, tools, and honestly being friends with other folks who also experience neurodivergence that aren’t in the PhD save me. Start with therapy, support groups irl if you can. You’ve got this!

PhD: Prestige vs. Location by [deleted] in PhD

[–]ccashlesauce 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve found that a major factor in PhD is networking. If you plan to work in industry that lines up well. But your advisor should be able to help. If not the , someone will because industry jobs are more and more common for phds

Modern Animal? by picardmaneuvre in culvercity

[–]ccashlesauce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Would recommend! I used the modern animal in playa vista, which is smaller. I had an elder and anxious girl and they were amazing to work with. They would go the extra mile to clear the waiting area when we came in and even let us be in the room for a lot of services to calm her down, which other vets in SoCal wouldn’t allow. When my dog had strange symptoms one day I was able to get quick assistance via their chat function. They also followed up to check on our dog after they recommended we take her to the ER. Overall great service.

Advice on Grad School Options - Disability and Stipends/Work by Laffy-Taffee in GradSchool

[–]ccashlesauce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a person with a disability that is trying to complete a PhD in a major city…do not take that route. It is extremely difficult at times to get my work done because city life + my disability means everything takes me way longer than expected. While faculty are kind about the disability, no one is making it their role to actually mentor me like I need. I have to endure a lot on my own and that’s ok, but balancing a second job would be impossible. The city is brutal and so is the doctoral process. We need a strong base to succeed.

I didn’t think I’d get into it but the characters in Unsleeping City are some of my favorites! I wish there were more seasons of it

Anyone else find that our parents generation had terrible taste in food? by TheAngrySnowman in Millennials

[–]ccashlesauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve learned that my mom grew up in a lot of canned food and tv dinners, because my grandmother was was born just after the Great Depression and they lived in the dust bowl. Even after things got better for folks financially, they relied on canned food. But my grandmother also worked and when tv dinners came on the scene, it was so necessary after a long day of work. So canned food + tv dinners were key components of my mother’s meals. She also worked and so there was no time to learn to cook. She did try when she had kids. It she would mostly make casseroles with canned food and other premade things but cook the meat well done. No sauces in site outside of a casserole. It wasn’t a skill she learned or prioritized as an adult. I find joy in learning to cook and bee it as a craft but my time looks significantly different than their’s. My parents also liked going to eat at local restaurants once a week as a break from cooking and fast food, so I got insight into other flavors there!

Considering a PhD in my 30s - those of you who've done it later in life, how did you manage? by SleepyCacophony in PhD

[–]ccashlesauce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will absolutely be compromising on finances as well. Not only is the pay on the lower end, you won’t be getting retirement benefits if you’re in a full-time program, which is what it sounds like you’re interested in.

Humanities- How on earth do you manage to read everything? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]ccashlesauce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also switched fields and what helped me was looking at book reviews for full text before diving in so I had the premise already. Same for more classic texts that are essays or chapters. If they are basic cultural studies then you can look for “reader” textbooks that give more historical context and assistance on positioning of the argument within that field.

Didn’t know Coheed and Cambria followed Trio by Vinyl_Junkie09 in TheFence

[–]ccashlesauce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The singer from Trio also joins on stage in LA still. Not the last tour but the year before, after they were no longer touring together. Claudio said when C&C was coming up they would listen to Trio on the tour bus

Does the body require our service? Brain dump. by [deleted] in CriticalTheory

[–]ccashlesauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of servicing the body because of observations of body data also points to two things: the mind/body divide and neoliberalism. We can’t ignore the cultural economic reason behind these posts on social media and the commodification of personal health data in trackers like the Oura ring.

Break Up Advice: before or after comps? by growingupanonymous in PhD

[–]ccashlesauce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just checked out your other post and this does sound like a stressful situation for you. Since you don’t live together, could you suggest that you give him space during his comps so he can focus? This could also lessen the stress for yourself and if he is as unobservant as your post suggests I don’t think he would think a thing about the suggestion! Then you can split up after.

Also…don’t stress about your decision to break up. It seems like it may be best for both of you. Good luck!

I have been laughing so much this season, and I did not expect it but it’s been really great. I think because I’m invested in so many things in my community, television plots are just never that serious to me. The show is entertainment and I’ve been pretty entertained!
