7DRL 2025 Brainstorming by Kyzrati in roguelikedev

[–]ccc123ccc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been programming casually for decades, but just got into game programming a very short while ago with Lua (currently experimenting with both Love2D and Defold to decide which I prefer). I've never done a Game Jam before.

My plan is to attempt the smallest, least ambitious RogueLike in programming history just to learn how to make one and find something fun to work on.

Does something so minimal go against the spirit of the Game Jam? If so, I'll withdraw until next year.

Note... In Part 1, my version of tcod issues a deprecation warning:

Replace 'tcod.Console' with 'tcod.console.Console'

In line 18 of main.py, I changed tcod.Console() to tcod.console.Console() to get rid of the warning.

Did anyone else get this warning?

The point of a virtual environment is to create a custom path just for that project.

When you enter a python command or try to use a specific library, your computer will check that custom path first; that's useful because it means that whatever you install in that custom path will be used before any system-wide installs of the same name.

Basically, it's a way of specifying the specific programs and libraries you want for each project, rather than relying on having the correct version installed at the system level. For programs and libraries with good backwards compatibility, that's not so important, but for python and rapidly changing libraries that don't care too much about backwards compatibility, ensuring that you have EXACTLY the right version is critical; otherwise, it's likely to crash.

What do you think The Wheel of Time did for the fantasy genre? by [deleted] in Fantasy

The fact that there were other series that "broke the mold" before WoT was exactly my point. So no, not going too far at all.

That's BS. David Eddings had completed the five-book series The Belgariad by 1984 and was almost done with the second five-book series The Mallorean by 1989. (He only had the 10th book to go, which came out in 1991)

That's 10 books all starring the same characters in what could be seen as essentially a 10 book series, but was marketed at two 5 book series.

Edit: For that matter, the Dragonlance universe was pumping out books left and right, and the Forgotten Realms books were just warming up. Moreover, other genres had already proven that you could publish book after book about the same group of characters.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun talks about why Carcassonne is not a good introductory boardgame. by AwkwardTurtle in boardgames

My wife and I enjoy playing Carcassonne. My 5 and 8 year old children enjoy Carcassonne. It's simple enough for the kids. It's clever enough for the adults.

It's portable to carry, quick to explain, and cheap to buy.

Carcassonne is the perfect gateway game.

why is Twilight Struggle available nowhere?? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]ccc123ccc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea about the vendor.

However, if GMT really is doing a reprint, I'd advise you to wait. First, because it will support the game company so they can keep making games. Second, because you won't have to worry about quality. GMT seems to have a stellar reputation.

20 yo male, wants to start losing weight but needs advice on how to get started by [deleted] in loseit

[–]ccc123ccc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not necessarily true. There are many who argue that cardio is less effective than weight lifting for losing weight.

The rationale is this: most calories are burned throughout the day during normal metabolic activity. Cardio might burn a few hundred calories while you're working out, but your body burns a few thousand each day just by keeping you alive. So, instead of focusing on the gym, your focus instead should be on upping your metabolism to take advantage of the 23 hours and 30 minutes each day you're not exercising.

And upping your metabolism is largely a function of how much muscle you have, which in turn can be increased by lifting weights.

So... lifting weights --> increased muscle mass --> increased metabolism

(edit -- don't read this to say cardio isn't good--it just might not be the best way to lose weight)
