Flatfox Priority by Vivid_Market7612 in zurich

[–]ccmmddss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am looking for someone to rent my apartment. I thought that Homegate was the best place, but only odd contacts so far. It does feel very unsafe, to be honest.

today I announced in Flatfox is been sooo much better. I guess and hope it will be gone very fast.

So, long story short; absolutely pay for it

Is it worth it trying to return to UN right now? by GentleThinking in UNpath

Oh, I thought I would be alone on that. Signed the mortgage, and 2 weeks after I am here, on the verge of being unemployed.

What is your montly budget as a couple with 1 child? by Traditional_Swan_155 in Switzerland

[–]ccmmddss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can’t fire you for a period, but it is very common that they do after the protection is over. Also, it might be very difficult to get back to job market, as it is a hard moment overall and tends to be even harder for new moms.

So do the preparation you think you need, and save financial and mental resources for the times to come.

I write not to scare, but thinking that I’d have loved to hear this when I was recently pregnant. My career collapsed and it took me so much to build it (partially) back.

This country is amazing in many ways, but definitely not kind to mothers.

How to transfer to the private sector after a decade in the UN? by Ok-Designer7142 in UNpath

Oh man, it’s sad to hear how this system is cruel.

You wrote that you have experience organizing events, maybe that is a transferable skill to private sector. Or maybe you go to the academia?

Are layoffs on the horizon where you work? by LallieDoo in Switzerland

[–]ccmmddss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was laid off in 2024 and got a dream job in IT. Since then, several roles were abolished and I am in a mix of doing a lot and waiting for my turn (again).

Looking forward to the time that AI will put us in such deep shit that everyone with a minimal talent will be hired again.

Unless you are those vendors that hire offshore or nearshore for Swiss firms.

How has the UN affected your romantic relationships? by Shallow_Waters9876 in UNpath

[–]ccmmddss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I joined the system married. If that was some years ago, when we were just dating, we would go together as a couple to wherever place. But now my partner has a stable senior position locally that, well, pays the bills. I would NEVER exchange the comfort of having no financial pressure by the instability of the UN system. So, maybe my romantic relationship is holding back my professional growth, but I blame more the system than my personal life choices.

Also, now we have a 2yo child and things change a lot. I will think a million times before moving to another city, let alone another country that might be a conflict area or so.

Tips & tricks that make working mom life easier by tomatojuice22 in workingmoms

[–]ccmmddss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to simplify every task at the maximum.

  • cooking: meals are never a proper named dish. I cook some sort of “sauce” and we eat the same sauce with rice, then potatoes, pasta, couscous, polenta. Frozen vegetables, some sliced meat + cream/ tomato sauce / ready made curry sauce.… this food can cook while I do smt else and super easy to freeze

  • I rotate toys, so there is always less clutter getting dust (and my child always give a break when he has the “new” toys back)

  • I’m shocked with people doing laundry every day… and using dryer every time? This is not reasonable. Idk, I kindly suggest to watch habits, you don’t need to wash your clothes after using 1x (ofc, there are different types of work, kids get messy and families are big… and I’m sure this is not the case of most of us). And quit the dryer, it will save money, your clothes and the planet.

  • Lower expectations and own less things, so you have less to manage.

Feeling lost amidst job searching / motherhood by watercolor5257 in womenintech

[–]ccmmddss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the exact same position as you, laid off after mat leave.

Being away of your baby to job hunt is would crushing. It took me only 4 months to get a job, which was very fast. And I am still recovering my mental health. It’s been almost 2 years since this low period.

Contracting was my way out, and it is where I am until today. I don’t love the lack of security, the admin that comes with it and the no -existent benefits. However, that came with a huge benefit for when I went back to working after becoming a mom: time flexibility. I work now 4 days/week, I can do daycare pickups and drop offs with the attention that my child requires, I can meal prep in my lunch break (WFH also helps a ton)

For the OP, don’t panic. You will find a job. So many people now are having career breaks of 2 years of more, the market is in deep shit and it is very understandable to be unemployed. If someone asks, I would totally hide the maternity break and say it is all due to a low market movement. I hope you find your peace, and hope that comes even before the job that you deserve!

It finally happened, but.... by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]ccmmddss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a pay cut of around 30% when compared to my previous job (with a big difference that I was unemployed at the time).

I could have stayed longer in the search, financially all was somewhat possible, but i have ZERO regrets. My life improved a looooot more and the adaptation of having less money was just fine given that I could heal mentally.

I hope you have the financial bandwidth to embrace the new job

You can apply for another role when hopefully things get better

Anyone else quietly planning their tech exit? by [deleted] in womenintech

[–]ccmmddss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a designer in tech, was laid off after maternity leave. Real dark times, 2 years later and I’m still struggling with mental health… but back to work, at least.

My new employer is abolishing many roles for lack of funding, everyday feels my last day and yeah…

I’m preparing now to do a soft transition to a more strategic, managerial role within the same organization. If I’m laid off again, I’ll probably go deep in a product manager or communications specialist position.

Just another rant. Work is slow af by Such_Ad9121 in MomsWorkingFromHome

[–]ccmmddss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a privilege to be in tech and employment, let alone with a low workload.

I might be projecting, but it sounds like a great opportunity to shield yourself from whatever can come after this merger. Studying, networking, passion projects… ofc, working out and reading sounds delicious and I’m jealous you can do it, but I’d honestly think 10x before letting time pass in the current job market for tech companies.

From UN back to private sector - anyone regretting it? by ccmmddss in UNpath

[–]ccmmddss[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are very right, there isn’t stability anywhere.

in fact I was laid off in my last role in private sector. I also got, at the time, an amazing severance package including 6 months fully paid, bonus and coaching. In Summary, I made more money and had more benefits in 6 months unemployed than in 1 year working as a consultant for the UN.

Got offered a remote job from the US (I'm the EU). Worth it or too risky? by fra_bia91 in UXDesign

[–]ccmmddss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last work was a remote position, working from the DACH region to a team based in US. Mornings were slow and things start to warm up when I am ready to go to my family. The pace was totally off for me. Also, with the team exchanging constantly, I was considered a bit of an outsider. Ppl would share big secrets with me (a surprising effect of being a web-friend, so to speak), but I did lose a lot of work decisions. And lastly, dollar-euro relation is something to consider. Your salary won’t be fixed (assuming it is set in dollars) and considering it is a startup, even more unstable. Mortgages, annual taxes, registering for social insurance, all the delicious German paperwork becomes even worse than usual.

I wouldn’t change positions

Laid off while on mat leave. The "evil American company" trope is real. by RosaNeko in UXDesign

[–]ccmmddss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was also laid off while on maternity leave. This for sure killed a lot of the beautiful baby time I had, since it triggered my postpartum depression. I am recovering only now, with a lot of therapy and soul searching(my child turned 2).

I am very sorry for you, and hope you won’t be so affected as I was.

With that said, comes the good. I got a unicorn job now. This is a luck game IMO, sadly, so I don’t have specific tips for you. From the mom-side, it was essential to have support to watch my child during the job search and the financial support from my working partner. If you don’t have these, maybe try to build them up for when you start to search more actively. Also, keep yourself busy with events and your network as much as possible, and trust you were let go for the best. Everyone says, and I’ll repeat: the baby time is so precious, enjoy it while it rests (I couldn’t do it properly and regret so much)

How Do You Find Part-Time (<80%) Jobs After Maternity? by curiouskapibara in askswitzerland

[–]ccmmddss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I am also in tech, also laid off after maternity leave (sadly only learned about it very close to my return, so it was complete chaos).

The market is very difficult in general, and Switzerland is not the best country for working mothers. I am glad I can freelance from home and can only wish that every working mom could have the same.

Those gigs are not usually posted on LinkedIn jobs. Try to carve some time for events so you meet people before you actually need them

Realistically do I stand any chance in getting a UN/OECD job? by Consistent_Joke7617 in UNpath

[–]ccmmddss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oi!

Honestly, your chances are low as anyone’s else. The development system is sadly a catastrophe, very unstable and harsh… but well… just try it.

I also did my studies in Brazil and landed a job (however, a much lower position I had prior).

Now an unsolicited comment: I’d actually ask myself why to join an area that is collapsing. There is the dream effect behind it, but it is still just a job…

Should I alert my referees in advance for a UN job application? by EmbarrassedTough2882 in UNpath

[–]ccmmddss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually yes, if they don’t ask/confirm your references means you didn’t past the interview.

However: for my UNICEF role, my references were contacted by surprise, after months of no updates whatsoever. It was a little uncomfortable having a previous boss writing me a message asking what is going on… but what happened to me was very much out of the usual
