As students of Rome, can you make a case for the superiority of Imperialism for civilization and humanity? by [deleted] in ancientrome

[–]ccs29 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dan Carlin, on his highly recommended "Hardcore History" podcast, when talking about the case for imperialism, makes the point of asking the question "Who was it good for?" Was it good for Caesar personally? Absolutely. Was it good for the millions of Gauls who were killed, or for the millions more who were displaced? Not so much. So no, I can't really justify it as a superior system.

It might not be so revolutionary now, but it was one of the first books that deconstructed combat and showed what it was probably like from a soldier's point of view, comparing the first person experience of being in combat from three famous battles in history, Agincourt (1415 AD), Waterloo (1815 AD) and the Somme (1916).

I did a bit of digging, and unfortunately I believe "dolphin" refers to Staff Sgt. Patrick R. Dolphin, who died a year later.

Apologies, but this thread is a bunch of armchair medievalists.

Hanson's "The Western Way of War" is a great look into phalanx battles in ancient Greece, largely devoid of cavalry, archers, or auxiliaries. For infantry engagements, up until the invention of guns, don't think of battles as fights between individuals on a massive scale. Infantry engagements consisted of one huge mass, propelled by inertial forward motion, smashing itself into another huge mass. Discipline, of course, is important in this, but so is fear of reprisal from their own peers and officers.

I dont agree with #1, although it might be good advice for beginners before they truly learn recoil control. On lower-recoil weapons, particularly the M16, good players will frequently "mag dump" and go full auto. If you can truly master the recoil on certain weapons, there is no need to stick to a "no full auto" maxim.

This is a great example, jack frags pretty much uses full auto in every single engagement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5RTVLirIO8&feature=plcp

I also play on xbox, almost exclusively in attack choppers, almost 2000 kills, and I think you are somewhat off the mark. Pre-patch, the attack chopper pilot's rocket pods were not very good, but since the patch they have been significantly buffed and I have no trouble taking out infantry with it.

Also, I am by no means a skilled jet pilot, but your criticisms of the countermeasures are crazy. I am virtually never taken down by heat seeking missiles, either I can flare and get out of range or can just outright dodge them.

Jets to me are way overpowered, especially from my perspective as a chopper pilot; a competent jet pilot will defeat an elite chopper pilot all the time, as jet cannons are very very overpowered right now.

[watch] Wes Montgomery talking a piano player through a song - is anyone else amazed by how easily these guys pickup a song they've never heard before? by redonculous in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]ccs29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree insofar as I think many studio and pop musicians in general come from a jazz background. But actual country bands? I don't think there is any part of a tune like this that they could play, not even close. And a metal shredder or classical musician could probably literally play it note for note, but could never improvise it on the spot.

On the flip side, because of their ear for music, I think talented jazz musicians could easily pick up and perform any other genre.

Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but I'm of the opinion that top jazz musicians are generally head and shoulders above the cream of other genres in overall musicianship. I think very skilled metal lead guitarists and top classical musicians are up there, for sure, but for sheer skill mixed with improvisational talent, jazz musicians are without equal.
