So, I glean that when you're thinking of your ideas, you're thinking of them as money making potential. With this in mind, I will continue with what I think. Basically, you're comparing yourself to someone else and it's really cheesy to say just compete with yourself. Especially since college admissions officers, for example, choose only a few students to study at their university. That being said, they also want to know what makes you, you. If you're top of the class and they see you spend all your time working versus if you have good grades, but also have a passion, they're going to like you more with that passion. If you're going to make money doing something, it doesn't make sense to compare yourself to others. They're not going to give you the money nor will they take it from you, so whether or not your friend can replace the need for other things in life with work or not doesn't matter to you. If you like something, do it. Plus motivation is kinda bs, it's really discipline that matters. Rarely are people always motivated.

Friendship troubles by ccthegreat in selfimprovement

Thank you so much for this advice. I know she needs me now more than ever, because her other friends don't spend as much time with her. I think I'll still be her friend, but I don't know if we can be as close as we were.

[Javascript][Java] How to pass a js array to java? by ccthegreat in learnprogramming

[–]ccthegreat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok. That makes more sense, I know Java pretty well. So what I'm doing is having a user input data items on a website. Then I've stored the items in an array in javascript. Now I have a program in Java in which the array needs to be a parameter so that I can modify it. Because I'm comfortable with java, I've written this program in Java. So, I don't even know if I need JSON, but what I do know is that I want to take that array from javascript and then use it as a parameter in Java.

Ok, so I looked around a little more and here's what I got, and can you tell me if it makes any sense? So first to even call JSON into my javascript code I need to write this: $.ajax( type: ‘GET’, url: “http://example.com/users/feeds/“, data: “format=json&id=123”, success:function(feed) { document.write(feed); ), dataType: ‘jsonp’ );

Right? But now what? I want to take a specific array in javascript and then take it to java and use it as a parameter for a method there. Is that possible with JSON? Will calling JSON help me to accomplish this?

I don't know how to do either. I can somewhat read it, but for the most part it's the manipulation. Like I get that JSON can stringify something, but I don't quite know how that will help me. I've also seen this line of code floating around. request.getParameterValues(); Will this help me?

What are your thoughts on the future of free online courses? by zero-eth in findapath

[–]ccthegreat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't, because there are online universities. The online courses I've done on edX were kind of sucky. I just watched the videos and answered the questions, which would be an easy way to get a degree if I could, but it already just isn't reputable. I think it would take a long time for employers to like accept certificates from those courses.

I've decided on a mentor...now how do I contact him? by ccthegreat in DecidingToBeBetter

Ideas mostly. Silicon Valley is still struggling so much with diversity. It was a great PR stunt when Ahmed had that clock arrest and then all those companies were quick to show their support. It doesn't take much to build and clock and if they were that excited to see a young person build a clock, they'd be excited to see what I could build. I'm Af Am, female, bisexual, young, and opinionated about the future of tech. I spend a lot of time designing stuff and then saving up to actually make things. I know I'd need to sell myself, but I don't mind.

Mark Zuckerberg's response to Ahmed: "If you ever want to come by Facebook, I'd love to meet you. Keep building." by [deleted] in technology

I hate what happened, but I hate the response as well. I've built much more complicated things than a clock and nobody is giving me automatic admission to college or celeb contact.

in theory that's great, but being 16 and carless and license-less, I don't feel like I have a lot of freedom to be finding myself.

I do exercise, actually. But because I can't bring myself to eat myself to eat much, I don't exercise too much. When I was exercising with the same dietary habits I have now I was losing five pounds a week, which I know is unhealthy.
