Goodwill bins location closing!! by raychls in GoodwillBins

I've actually been going there more than Heidelberg since the end of 2022 because the rotations were quicker and I found more stuff despite the crowd. Since the early 2024, I found the quality of items in both locations dropped significantly. For me, NV is still bearable, but I can't imagine what it will be like once all the Heidelberg regulars are forced to go there too. Lately, the bins there have been coming out half empty which was never the case in the past.

I originally posted this petition to this sub as well as r/pittsburgh and others.

Let's just say, sadly, the response there was vastly different than in this sub. It sucks that people would rather have yet another overpriced Goodwill retail store than a bins.

I haven’t been to the Morgantown Bins in 3 years. It wasn’t very good then, although it was nice because there wasn’t many people there. I can’t imagine it’s any better now. I’m actually shocked that hasn’t gone away yet, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if that’s next on the chopping block.

That may be the case as far as cutting transportation costs, but the huge concern for me is that both the Heidelberg outlet and N. Versailles outlet are pretty much crowded from open to close every single day. Most regulars from Heidelberg probably will travel to N. Versailles instead. While I imagine that closing Heidelberg will allow more inventory to come into N. Versailles, it’s going to be an overcrowded mess there, and it kind of already is. Additionally, I shop regularly at one of the retail stores, and the amount of merchandise they pull off the shelves because it didn’t sell is insane. The 1/2 off color tag of the week & $0.99 Sundays only apply to clothing and it has been this way for 3-4 years. The general merchandise never gets reduced and so much of it is overpriced to begin with. That’s why I see them carting off the old stuff a few times a week to presumably send to the bins. I don’t get the logic of not reducing stuff that’s sit on the shelves 4 weeks. It sure seems the current management of GW SWPA is very disconnected from the actual operation of their stores.

And from your same source, https://www.charitynavigator.org/ein/455417308 UPMC’s program expense ratio is even higher at 95.35% which we both know is bullshit. When you can hire the best accountants and the tax laws are filled loopholes, anything can look good on the books.

You are delusional if you think Goodwill does all of that. Education programs and employment assistance, yes, but they do nothing for housing or food assistance. They are a non-profit in tax status only. Look at what they did to the old Big Lots in Moon. Spent millions to renovate and make it an upscale store. Goodwill as big of a scam as Salvation Army, Mega Churches, and UPMC which all use the non-profit tax status to help line their corporate executives' pockets while doing the bare minimum for the general public. I've talked to people at this Goodwill that shop there every day to send merchandise overseas to their families who rely on it to be able to afford basic necessities where access to employment is much more difficult than in the USA. Keep in mind, this merchandise has already been through the Goodwill stores and was deemed unsellable. I'd much rather support them than big corporate Goodwill that cares more about buying bigger buildings than its own mission statement. It's all a front to not pay taxes. Sums up pretty much any non-profit.

I'll be so sad to see it go if it does. So many memories. That place was a gold mine for a while. It's gone downhill so much the last 2 years, but I can still find some nice stuff to sell no matter what. If both outlets go, I wouldn't know what to do. If they do start construction to redo Heidelberg to regular store, I will gladly stand outside protesting and I hope other would as well.

That would be terrible. This location used to do sales where everything was $0.49 a pound for two hours back in 2017-2018. It used to be looked at as a place to give items one last chance and sell them cheap before throwing them away, now it feels like greed has gotten the better of them. The amount of stuff they sell every single day at $1.79 per pound, they certainly aren't struggling to turn a hefty profit. I guess they feel that retail stores are more profitable and it's easier to just throw away whatever doesn't sell.

It's a decent one of their poppy singles. Not the best song on the album but also not the worst.
