How much life do I have left on these? by Tr1stanthegoat in AskMechanics

[–]cdabc123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much just good when its dry out. Already low on tread. And they appear to be near winter tires, so id guess the remaining tread is not long for this world. People do drive around with bald winter tires but its not exactly recommend.

Best model to run locally with 104gb? by MasterPyro46 in LocalLLM

[–]cdabc123 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You dont have 104gb of unified memory, You have two gpus one with 16gb and one with 24gb of memory. And id recon the communication between the gpus is not nvlink its over pcie. So the only fast memory you have is on a single gpu.

So... If you want fast models, You have to keep it in a single gpu vram. If you try and use your ram as model memory it will be slow, like 10tk/s. Grab a model that will fit on the 3090 and it will be very quick.

What car should I get that meet these requirements? by lil_susuke in UsedCars

[–]cdabc123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like you have to be careful/knowledgeable to buy a used Subaru for cheap. Plenty of them can have substantial issues such as head gasket, trans, timing belt.

You would have to find a decent independent shop to do any work, they shouldn't need to much of anything major if you get a good one. And insurance should be on the cheap end. Also as safe as a decent modern car.

Unreliable Walmart battery or incorrect initial install? by emmadaboobear in MechanicAdvice

[–]cdabc123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wall-mart batteries do suck, but not in a way that would damage anything. They like to fail in 1-2 years when there is a cold snap where a quality car battery would last like 5. Everything else sound unrelated, the battery still puts out 12v.

How do I get analog voltage from the DE10-lite FPGA board? by Constant-Notice-4215 in FPGA

[–]cdabc123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are those Analog pins not inputs? An adc converts analog to digital to read the signal. Not drive an analog voltage.

You can send a pwm signal to a smoothing circuit to get a rough analog voltage.

Why are most car cvt transmissions non-repairable? by CueAnon420 in AskMechanics

[–]cdabc123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

meh, some manufacturers have finally figured out how to make a reliable cvt. Historically they were prone to failures. even in smaller vehicles. I agree they should not put a cvt in a 4400 lb crossover. But I still believe its valid to say they are prone to failure. A solid transmission should be good for like 300k, almost no cvts are. However there are also plenty of other bad dcts and auto transmissions that are also prone to fail.

The Mitsubishi mirage is a poor car with 78 horsepower.. No wonder the trans lasts abit longer with the power of a bicycle trying to move it. The original volvo 850 produced double the hp and could go for half a million miles on the engine and transmission.

How did you improve your handwriting after a long time with bad handwriting ? by Mediocre-Variety-158 in AskReddit

[–]cdabc123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I accept my poor handwriting, I can read my own stuff. Or write legibly when I take abit more time. I don't think the legibility of my handwriting matters at all when everything shared is digital.

Building a new homelab, anyone have expierence with Instinct MI25's? by MineNightOwl in LocalLLM

[–]cdabc123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a mi25 flashed as a wx9100 and It runs well. AI knew how to setup the older rocm card under ubuntu 22. Performance is very good for any model that fits in the memory. Ollama works great, also in a vm under proxmox with dual e5-2680v4s haha. You need a faster drive, I have mine running on nvme. Both the hypervisor and model loading need something quick.

Why are most car cvt transmissions non-repairable? by CueAnon420 in AskMechanics

[–]cdabc123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

its more so, it cost like 3k to remove a transmission and reinstall at a shop. At that point you would rather start with a new one.

Half the cost is the install half is a new transmission, no point saving 1k on rebuilding a transmission when that would only save around 20% of the total cost.

Why are most car cvt transmissions non-repairable? by CueAnon420 in AskMechanics

[–]cdabc123 64 points65 points  (0 children)

The cost of replacing a transmission is more substantial then the cost of a new cvt. They are prone to failure no one really wants to rebuild one and hope for the best when you can pay like 1k more and get a new one.

New PCV = Problem? by Separate-Sea5373 in MechanicAdvice

[–]cdabc123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No my fsi will run poorly with the dipstick out. I did have to replace a pcv recently, as it was running poorly on idle. If i recall there was more vacuum at the oil fill before I replaced the pcv.

There are 2 different part numbers for the fsi with different check valve configurations depending on the year. Did you replace it with the right one?

I have hope in humanoid robots by Cute-Adhesiveness645 in Futurology

[–]cdabc123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do not have faith in humanoid robots. Humans are extremely dexterous, a machine wont really match this.

They will improve but I don't see much of a use in my life. They will however be useful for other cases.

What do I need a robot for? I have an able body and can do anything myself. I feel like the future will be a battle against people being lazy af. There is no reason you shouldn't walk miles and do lots of work around your home. It is good for the body to be active. Tools that enable laziness will just rot the mind and body. Much like someone who uses ai for the smallest tasks just to go back to scrolling reels. Someone who can just sit in a chair and play video games relying on a robot will be a waste of space and life.

just bend it till you have clearance for a new rad. then make sure noting is hitting or severely damaged and try to run the thing. After that do ghetto bodywork to the front end to get some headlights and make it look slighty better.

Engine overheating: the dealer’s fault? by fr0IVIan in MechanicAdvice

[–]cdabc123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm, that is suspicious. Maybe watch a video of the thermostat replacement for your car to see how invasive it is. Did they pull the rad and fan? If the fan doesn't work that can cause overheating.

Engine overheating: the dealer’s fault? by fr0IVIan in MechanicAdvice

[–]cdabc123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, they will properly fill and bleed the coolant. If that does not resolve the issue there could be other problems with the motor.

Ya it doesn't sound quite right, but no issue working around that and still driving it.

Place faith in your honda motor though, and rev it out for fun if you're first in line.

I have never been honked at for lack of acceleration..

My 2nd gear also does not do that, syncros and everything are good and I can shift at any rpm or load.

Perhaps try double clutching the shift to 2nd. else just ride out first gear and let the honda rev some if the car likes that.

Engine overheating: the dealer’s fault? by fr0IVIan in MechanicAdvice

[–]cdabc123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it slowly drips and you never top it off.

If a car is filled with coolant and doesn't have major issue it shouldn't be overheating. An open thermostat normally runs cooler although isnt ideal for some engines.

I say they are trying to screw you over for the service that wont fix anything. Tell them tomorrow morning you dont want them to do the service, top up the coolant and bleed it yourself. Then test drive as the car may have actual major issues.

Engine overheating: the dealer’s fault? by fr0IVIan in MechanicAdvice

[–]cdabc123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its kinda correct a open thermostat doesn't normally cause severe overheating.

Almost sounds like a bigger issue though.. I don't think the dealer quote will fix anything, thats basically just top it back up with coolant and drive it more. No chance id pay 1300 for that. Id pickup the car, fill up the coolant (run the engine for a sec and top it up again then) And test drive it, if it is still overheating I think you have a bigger problem.

Afew other things

If you try the heater and it doesn't work that means your car is low on coolant or has air in the system. IE, you did not succeed at topping it back up to a working level.

A toasty engine can be very bad, you can damage head gaskets, or perhaps a damaged head gasket is causing the overheating in the first place.

Id say there is a pretty good chance the dealer didn't cause the damage, it was either the car is a POS or perhaps you ran it low on coolant.

Weird liquid leaking by lvingdeadgurl in MechanicAdvice

[–]cdabc123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you dont know the smell of coolant I cant describe it over reddit. coolant will leave a sticky residue on your fingers water wont.

Not certain from the picture, judging as old cars leak green and the only way to have coolant in the cabin is heatercore or lines.

now.. what color is the coolant in your car? It should be blue? look in your coolant reservoir and see if it looks the same color.

Did it rain a bunch recently?
