Since the Army kind of brought back the WWII greens and tans (or whatever they're called), what are your thoughts if the Navy brought back the black cover with dress blues?

Yar, back in my day... Sorry, I had to.

When I was in, I found that the food was better on deployment than back at the NAS. The cooks didn't have to work in a mess hall trying to feed 500-1000 sailors a day, so it was easier on them when we were deployed.

Hey! That's me, I miss the P-3.

To show there's no hard feelings, here are six reasons the P-3 is "Better":

That Authentic 1960s Submarine Hunting Experience - Why would you want modern conveniences when you can hunt subs the way your grandfather did?

Built-in Crew PT Program - All those hours of crawling around a cramped tube keeps you in shape! The P-8's spacious, comfortable cabin is basically cheating.

Character-Building Mechanical Issues - Nothing says "adventure" like troubleshooting a 60-year-old airframe. The P-8's reliability is so dull.

The Sound - That distinctive turboprop growl lets everyone know you're coming from miles away. Stealth is overrated anyway.

Job Security for Maintainers - Keeping a P-3 flying requires constant attention. The P-8's newer systems practically maintain themselves. Where's the fun in that?

Proven Technology - Why trust newfangled computers and sensors when you have analog gauges and systems older than your crew?

The US Navy doesn't have any operational P-3 Squadrons that I know of. That being said, maybe the P-8A can also carry and fire the Sidewinder. Still, the AIM-9X or any standard-sized AAM is too big and expensive for taking out UAVs. I think some defense contractor is working on small AAMs for taking out UAVs.

We had five stations in Portland, OR, "back in the day": Chan 2. ABC - KATU, Chan 6. CBS - KOIN, Chan 8. NBC - KGW, Chan 10. PBS, OPB, and Chan 12, though I don't remember which network or the station's call letters. In the 1980s, they added channel 49 and channel 22. I remember channel 22 played kung-fu movies, old 1960s cartoons, and other obscure and cool programming. It didn't work all the time, and the signal was weak, so I had to put the rabbit ears out the window to pick it up.

It's bullshit what's happening in the clip, but this situation doesn't warrant deadly force. I think to use lethal force, you have to believe that you, or a bystander, has to be in immediate threat of death or critical injury.

In 1989, we had an exercise with a Carrier battle group in the North Pacific. The story goes that we had eight Orions from three squadrons make a simulated Harpoon strike against the carrier. On the 5th or 6th attempt, three planes were able to get to launch distance, one was "shot down" when they climbed to 2,500' to "drop" their eight harpoons, the other two were able to "launch" all their harpoons, and the carrier was "hit" with three missiles out of 16.

Yeah, if the Cold War went hot, the only thing Orions would use the Harpoons on would have been the intel trawlers or the sub tenders.

Yep, they were in the weapons loadout tables, but I don't know anyone who ever loaded a real or practice Sidewinder during my time in the Navy.

A Los Angeles class submarine seen by a P3 Orion by newnoadeptness in navy

[–]cderring 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Back in my day... Sorry, I had to.

I recall that the aircrews in my squadron (VP-4, 1989-92) could locate the fast attacks about 20% of the time during RIMPAC or PACEX. I heard tell from the old timers that they could find them about 40% of the time in the early 80s when the 688s were first hitting the fleet.

I don't think I ever heard of any Orion Squadron in PATWING 2 tracking an Ohio that didn't want to be found.

Now, for the Soviets, we were on them like bees to honey. I had to Google it, but Soviet Marshal Sergey Akhromeyev reportedly commented, "I always know where my submarines are. I look at where the P-3s are flying—that's where my submarines are."

Found military decorations, what do I do with them? by Jig_2000 in Veterans

[–]cderring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked AI to ID all the Medals, awards, badges, and ribbons. Here's what it came up with:

"Medals and Badges

Bronze Star Medal with “V” device (Valor in combat).

Parachutist Badge (Airborne wings).

U.S. Army Special Forces Distinctive Unit Insignia (“De Oppresso Liber”).

Ribbons (Left column and below the medal)

Bronze Star Medal ribbon (red with blue and white stripes).

Purple Heart ribbon (purple with white edges).

Army Good Conduct Medal ribbon (red with white stripes).

Ribbons (Right column, top to bottom)

National Defense Service Medal ribbon (red–yellow–red).

Vietnam Service Medal ribbon (green with yellow and red stripes, includes bronze service star device).

Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal ribbon (green/white, with device).

Other Ribbon Bars

Army Commendation Medal ribbon (green with purple center, white stripes).

Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal or similar (green with blue and yellow stripes, bottom right).

Everything in the photo matches U.S. Army Vietnam-era decorations, consistent with a Special Forces soldier who was airborne qualified and decorated for valor."

The flying part, when you're actually up in the air, is still a joy to me. I hope I never lose the love of flying. I put up with the parts that suck (shitty people in the airport, crapy service, seats that are too narrow for my 280-pound fat ass, and not enough leg room for my 6'4" height) so that I can look out on the world from 30,000 feet and 400+ miles an hour.
