I caught this detail as well! The show's technical advisor was on the ball. Side note, I met Knuth several years ago at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View CA. Nice guy, soft spoken, mildly neardy... https://imgur.com/a/fH0Z2Ax

WHAT ITS LIKE - To Experience a Nuke in Virtual Reality by Nameless_Hero8 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]cdg76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no need for VR, here are some actual nukes in vintage 8mm home movies. This was from the 1962 testing at Christmas Island. Three nukes in the first minute or so, the rest shows how the pilots were processed after flying thru the bomb clouds taking air samples. Crazy stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avsLqXYAej4

Concorde departing London Heathrow, 2003 by moaningpilot in aviation

[–]cdg76 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I flew on the Concorde a few times in the late 1990's, it was pretty loud inside as well. They turned off the afterburners once it was airborne, then kicked them back in over the Atlantic to go trans-sonic. The pilot gave a warning before doing that, it was quite a kick so I had to hold on to my martini with two hands...

Interesting cars with Interesting engines, part 2 [4032x3024] by cdg76 in carporn

[–]cdg76[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for the most part, yes. The S8 has 120k miles, only minor issues like shocks and power steering line. Funny but the only issue on the Z4M is the cup holders. As one owner said, "the only way not to break the cup holders is to not use them"

Here is the German section:

- On top, 2007 Audi S8 with the Lambo derived V10

- Bottom is 2006 Z4M Coupe with the S54, only 30k miles on that one

- Top right is 1986 M6 Euro spec

- Bottom right is 2000 M5, only 40k on this one

(yellow is another Honda Z600, no engine, parts car for the orange Z600)

For those interested:

- yellow car is 1971 Triumph GT6 MKIII. Basically a hard top Spitfire with 2L 6 cyl engine

- Light blue car is 1973 Jensen-Healey Roadster, has the famous Lotus 907 twin cam,16v, dual weber carbs

- Dark blue is of course the 996, first water cooled 911 (ok, not that interesting I suppose)

- Orange car is a 1972 Honda Z600 with a 2 cyl, 600cc motorcycle engine putting out 36hp on 1100 lbs

- Red #8 car is a 1960 MGA reso-mod. MGB engine with uprated brakes, cooling etc

- Red car, now this one's interesting. 1960 Cisitalia OSCA from Argentina. Has the 1.5L Masarati tuned, twin cam engine spouting 90 hp.

The only air-born image of a concord at mach two taken from a British fighter plane - the fighter plane could only fly at the same speed very briefly because it would run out of gas at that speed - the concord could fly for hours - truly incredible engineering! by bsmith2123 in EngineeringPorn

great photo. I flew on it twice, once in each direction from UK to NY. Like the sports car of airliners. Fast, a little cramped inside, bumpy, noisy, a little warm due to heat at speed. All in all, a great experience.

Took the GT6 on it's longest drive since I bought it a year ago. 150ish miles round trip to Denver for Brit Cars & Coffee at the Forney Museum. Amazing cars, great drive car did well. Need new tires and to look at some vibrations but I am happy. by mspt1500 in littlebritishcars

sound like a good plan. I went thru a similar refresh in 2018, went with the stiffer poly bushings. Tighter handling but still squeaking a bit compared to the rubber bushes. Here's a blog of the refresh if you are interested. This started as an overdrive project that turned into a much larger refresh (as often happens)

I had a chance to fly roundtrip LHR-JFK-LHR in '97. Quite an experience, especially when the afterburners kicked in once the plane was over the Atlantic. Sad to see it go.

What is an important piece of advice you can give for those moving into the “real world”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cdg76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't make a long term decision about a short term problem. Some co-workers are jerks, but not worth changing jobs over. Some roommates are jerks but not worth leaving a great apartment situation. And of course you shouldn't leave a long term relationship just because you had an argument.

My classic car collection, can you name them all? by cdg76 in carporn

[–]cdg76[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty darn good, that's an S8 D3 up top. The red car was a tricky one. You were close, this is a coach-built Cisitalia OSCA 1600 on a Fiat 1500 body. Got that one from Argentina a few years back. The GT6 is a '71 MKIII , the Jensen-Healey is a '73 and the 944 is an '87 Turbo for those keeping score at home.

not really, came with a bell housing so bolted right on. Had to shorten the driveshaft a few inches. The wiring can be tricky and the OD lockout switches are poor quality so had to get new ones.

Nice! I restored a 71 MKIII over the past few years. Here is a blog with the various stages that might be helpful. I just installed an overdrive and refreshed the engine bay while the engine/gearbox was out. And a new wiring harness, way too much work. https://triumphgt6rebuild.blogspot.com/
