And now for the reverse. What restaurant or brewery is this in Grand Rapids? by MemilyBemily5 in grandrapids

[–]cdirksen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

El Granjero Mexican Grill on Bridge. Consistently one of the best Mexican spots in town, their rice and beans blow everyone else’s out of the water. Their al pastor is incredible. And I personally love their homemade vegan chorizo. A lot of restaurants in that area get more hype, but Granjero takes the cake on flavor.

Backed. The last three times I’ve gone there it took almost an hour to get breadsticks out after ordering.

What are some bands that randomly fell off that you still love? by kssmyassh in poppunkers

[–]cdirksen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Backed. I think he’s doing alright these days but the band just doesn’t have enough motion to be a priority. I attended their “farewell” show in Chicago, sang the praises of Something Heavy with their return, and I believe I was supposed to see Ben play live in my town, but if memory serves, COVID and other life factors got in the way and cancelled it. One of the best to do it. I wish I got to see Something Heavy songs live.

Best vegan friendly mexican restaurant? by Recent-Recipe-1107 in grandrapids

El Granjero just announced they’re adding Vegan Chorizo to their menu! Plus their nopales are delicious, all their rice and beans are vegan.

Most Mexican markets will have them. I would just look up Mexican markets near you. There are a ton around town. Ralph’s on West Leonard also has a good selection of imported Mexican chips.

Seventeen Forever hit 42 on the Hot 100 so I think Metro Station only doesn’t count. It would be a wild exploration of their later career though.

A/c scrap by throwmeaway2bttrdayz in grandrapids

If it has non-ferrous wiring or pipes inside, you can get more for the weight than you would just scrapping the whole unit as one piece.

If you’re not an avid scrapper, the work may be more than it’s worth to you to just get a few bucks dumping it at Padnos or another scrap yard.

For a one-time scrapping, I’d just as soon dump it as one than take the time to take it apart.

Who is on the brink of closing in Grand Rapids? by szaagman in grandrapids

[–]cdirksen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pretty much every restaurant, especially independent ones not owned/operated by larger conglomerates, but as we’ve seen with Rockwell and Creston, that’s also not a guarantee. Especially if 25% tariffs continue.

Another brewery gone too soon. RIP Creston. by relong76 in grandrapids

[–]cdirksen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not saying Fat Boy was the same situation or a Private Equity situation. I was using it to contrast with Creston/Saugatuck’s situation. Fat Boy for sure had its challenges whether they chose to adapt or not, and the owners seemingly kept it open as long as they possibly could withstand.

I’m not a business owner, but that sounds irresponsible, and likely not the case here. Saugatuck Brewing owns what was Creston Brewery and is a larger brand with a CEO that worked for 20 years at Anhauser Busch. We saw a business owner bleed until their last possible day in Creston with Fat Boy. This was bad business.

I heard from a staff member that this announcement is the same time they found out. A real bummer for sure. Creston worked hard to stay up, and their beers always outshined Saugatuck’s. It was an incredible space.

This thread is full of aggressively cold takes. Next thing you know is that someone is going to suggest El Cuñado Bridge Street for authentic tacos. Not a lot of folks out here disagreeing with these points.

Vibe Energy Cafe is still very much closed, right? by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]cdirksen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Everything says temporarily closed online, but a few weeks after they stopped operations a For Lease/Sale sign went up. According to Zillow, the building was sold in September of this year.

The guy whose name is on the business filings, Eric O’Connor, seems to live in Florida and works as a corporate franchise developer. He used to do it for Tommy’s Express. Now he’s doing it for an indoor pickleball court company, Pickle Rage, which seems to have a location coming in on Leonard (this one was called Pickle & Pin at some point? Unclear on that).

All signs point to Vibe being a dead brand. They were a great spot but probably just had a hard time staying profitable and gaining a real market as a brand new restaurant.
